You're making assumptions about what someone else is thinking and what their motivations are......which you're not qualified to do, because 1) you don't know them in real life, 2) you're not inside their heads, 3) It's not always about you.

thanks, all good points. i'll dispute one thing - sometimes me simply asking an open ended question results in some people, who see everything in a very negative light (cus they're obviously miserable) assuming and reading all sorts of stooopid negative shit into my open ended question. then they ask me loaded assholy questions about why i think something i never even implied, let alone said.

but point taken - you're 100% right that it's folly to try and presume what someone else's intentions are. all the more reason I'll repeat what i said before:

i still try to interpret and react to the person's words, and not the person.

Well, (Karmastic,) you ask some naive and off the wall questions sometimes. Hard to gauge if you're joking, trying to kill time, or actually gathering intel.

I have been here a long time and used to be a big participant on the boards. Now, I read a bit, but don't really feel compelled to reply.

Two things happened to change that. One, circumstances in my life changed so I did not feel like posting and two, the boards became less interesting to me.

I still remember what people wrote and I am sure some people remember me. Since I have changed in how I view things based on my changed experiences, I now look at what someone writes for the particular post, rather than the past.

One more thing: although we all make assumptions about people, since all we have to go on are momentary blips of information conveyed in their posts, truly, one never really knows what is going on behind the scenes. So unless you have met or spoken to the person, you can never know who they are or why they replied the way they did.

I have also gone through a lot of changes in how I view things over the years, so I can relate to that.

Sometimes...

If someone has shown themselves consistantly to be the type of person I would respect the opinions of then that will colour my thoughts
If someone has shown themselves to be an asshole over and over and over again then chances are that will also colour my thoughts

If people gain a good reputation then chances are others will be more forgiving if they occasionally mess up
If people are consistantly assholish then it is is more likely i will expect them to be assholeish

Gosh I know, it would suck to have it around in real life, but i work pretty hard at keeping people like that out of my life. Although I get tired of it on here at times and then I turn off the computer for a while.
