One Million Moms and the department-store chain are locking horns again

Just a few months after anti-gay group One Million Moms launched a campaign to remove Ellen DeGeneres as JCPenney’s spokesperson because of her sexual orientation, the group is boycotting the department store over a new ad featuring a same-sex couple. The Father’s Day ad shows real-life dads Todd Koch and Cooper Smith playing with their children, Claire and Mason. The ad reads:

“First Pals: What makes Dad so cool? He’s the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver — all rolled into one. Or two.”

One Million Moms, part of the American Family Association, complained that JCPenney was “continuing on the same path of promoting sin” with this new ad, and recommended their supporters write “Refused … Return to sender” on their JCPenney catalog when it arrives. They also advised members to close their JCPenney accounts and talk to their local-store manager about their concerns.

“It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral in the culture war. JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well. Our persistence will pay off! We must remain diligent and stand up for Biblical values and truth.”

The last time One Million Moms and JCPenney locked horns, the store responded by standing behind its partnership with DeGeneres, stating that “Ellen represents the values of our company” — and with this kind of proequality advertising, JCPenney is “continuing to reinforce its progressive values.” It’s not the first fight for either of them; in February, JCPenney distributed a Mother’s Day ad featuring two lesbian parents and their daughters; One Million Moms also took a stance against Urban Outfitters after the store featured two women kissing in its catalog in April.

JCP also does its market research, apparently.

First of all, I doubt there is anywhere near a million of them or that they will be able to stir
up a million to boycott.
They tried this with Disney several years ago
I believe over giving same sex couples benefits.
It was a big flop, conservatives want to go to
Disney World to and their kids want to watch
Winnie the Pooh and but Princess and Toy Story merchandise.
People in groups like this are already relics on
the wrong side of history. And the only noses they're cutting off are their own. Penney's will
be fine. They know which side their bread is
buttered on and it isn't the side with the stone
agers.

Looks like I have to start shopping JCP.

Never heard of the 'Million Moms' before. There are advantages to limiting things to some extent on the 'news' front.

In any case I can (personally) think of more than 100 hundred moms who would want nothing to do with 'Million Moms,' if this is any indication. Having met only one or two moms who would consider such an association, I think this tells me what I need to know.

Is JC Penney being perhaps too 'forward,' almost 'promoting' gay marriage?

I think that it might be worthy of discussion, but US politics and US whore media that we have, groups like the Tea Party or Million Moms are dragged in to tsunami anything resembling rational discussion out of the way.

Kind of reminds me of the Bill Mahler piece presenting a completely distorted, out-of-context, thoroughly bigoted representation (and very specifically chosen) of Mississippians, while thinking himself quite clever, not to mention 'fair and balanced,' for presenting a completely distorted, out-of-context, thoroughly bigoted representation (again, very specifically chosen) of black NYC dwellers waiting in line at the unemployment office.

Hmmm, what to say on this ...

One of my ex-girlfriends was a fashion designer for a large department store, and she didn't like Penneys. But that was then, this is now, and fashions change.

I go back and forth on the gay marriage thing. One of my first cousins, once removed (the equivalent of an uncle, in this case) has lived with his life partner for decades, even since the '60's, even in some small town in PA and lastly in Macon Ga., alternately attending either one's churches. ("We both like to sing, we go to his church one week, my church the next week").

I'm definitely not saying that such a marriage should be outlawed, just that I don't understand the necessity in every case. De facto marriage has been there for some time, but if de jure marriage seems to be the way to go, and unfortunately, what's needed to prevent legal problems elsewhere, then it's all OK here.

But my 'uncle' and his life-mate figured it out decades before whatever legal system woke up to the fact. Just sayin'.

As for Ellen The Degenerate ...

Her show is the only one I can watch more than five minutes. I didn't have cable at the time (don't even have a TV now), so Colbert Report might have snuck in there too. (or should that be ... "The Colbert Rapport"?)

Ellen does not need to promote anything other than just her own wonderful self.

Just sayin'.

1)  I personally think all this is a means to simply gain PUBLICITY on JC Penney's part -- which presently does NOT seem to be working, at least in the long-run thus far.

2)  Sales are FALLING and their Stock has PLUMMETED since the Ellen Degeneres issue in Feb, 2012.

3)  Their CEO is being paid $53 MILLION, mostly in STOCK -- i.e., subject to the 15% Capital Gains rate.

*Note:  JC Penny's CEO has stated he expects sales to fall over the next year, but to then rise the following year.  Hopefully (for the company) he has a better crystal ball than the CEO of Montgomery Wards did.

J.C. Penney CEO Paid $53 Million -- Mostly in Stock Awards (i.e., Taxed at the 15% Capital Gains Rate)

“It's more proof that the more you pay a CEO, the more overconfident he becomes. Mr. Johnson, a lauded former Apple executive, didn't begin as Penney's so-called turnaround artist until November. That didn't stop the company from paying him $52.6 million for 2011, most of it in stock awards. Compare that to America's median household income of less than $53,000 a year.”

*Note:  Why are the LIBS now SILENT about this CEO's (i) Salary, and (ii) Obviously paying the LOWER 15% Tax Rate on his earnings that the Libs/Dems and Baroccoli O'Fuckup has been whining about?!!

First Quarter Results -- LOSSES (While LOWERING Expenses)

"Comparable store sales for the first quarter declined 18.9 percentTotal sales decreased 20.1 percent, which includes the effects of the Company's exit from its outlet business.  Internet sales through jcp.com were $271 million in the first quarter, decreasing 27.9 percent from last year.

Gross margin was 37.6 percent of sales, compared to 40.5 percent in the same period last year.  Overall, compared to last year, gross margin was impacted by lower than expected sales in the quarter and the impact of taking deeper seasonal markdowns to clear inventory coming out of the fourth quarter of 2011.  This also includes the impact of a $53 million markdown reserve taken as a result of the Company's continuing efforts to reduce inventory levels to align with its new strategy.  This reserve had a 170 basis point impact on gross margin; excluding this reserve, gross margin was 39.3 percent of sales.  A reconciliation of non-GAAP adjusted gross margin to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure is included with this release.

The Company's SG&A expenses decreased $121 million versus last year's first quarter.  Based on the pace of its ongoing efforts to aggressively manage expenses, coupled with additional operational efficiencies that management has identified, the Company now expects savings to accelerate and exceed the run rate of approximately $900 million at the end of 2012, one year earlier than it had previously announced.

Stock Tumbles to nearly HALF it's Value Since Feb, 2012 (from $43.00 to $24.00)

Winterapple -> RE: Anti-Gay Group Slams JCPenney over Father’s Day Ad (6/12/2012 4:23:30 AM)

Penney's may indeed go bust but it won't be
because of these outraged moms boycotting
or because they did a ad campaign with
Ellen
Could this be a cynical attempt on Penney's
part to get free publicity? Could they be trying
to rebrand themselves for what they perceive
as a hipper target audience to increase their
sales? Uh, yes.
I use to work in advertising it is by it's very
nature cynical and calculating.
Retail is very competitive and they are
always looking for ways to stand out
from their competitors. So no news there.
Penney's did marketing research before
they put this out. And I'm pretty sure the
majority of conservative moms who like
Penney's product and it's price will keep
shopping there. I imagine some of those
moms watch Ellens tv show to.
I in no way think having Ellen do this
campaign has hurt their business at all.
The controversy might bring in a few customers.
In any case it was calculated risk they were
willing to take.
When you're in a slump you try new stuff, you look
for a broader base to pitch to.
And if I were in retail I'd be very eager to
pitch to upscale gay dads and the people
who love them.

Their stocks plummeted and their CEO is paid $31 million more than the Verizon CEO, and Kalik is tooting their horn? [:D]

lol -- you guys realize retail stores have an annual cycle, right? Summer ain't the hot season.

Sanity -> RE: Anti-Gay Group Slams JCPenney over Father’s Day Ad (6/12/2012 6:11:22 AM)

You leftists... [:D]

If you like a CEO you will write anything to back his or her pay package. Say, if he or she puts Ellen in an ad... he or she is just swell, and the fifty million in stock options isnt an issue regardless the amount, and no matter the health of the company.

But... if he or she has union issues... that changes everything. His or her pay package came from dealing with the devil, didnt it.

SO predictable...

Not necessarily. You're making the assumption that the Million Mom's aim is to accomplish social goals. I suspect they may be more concerned about rousing their base and getting them to donate.

Consistently honest about it too... [;)]

Where is the One Million Dads group on this?

Where is it on the overwhelming skew of product selections towards women? Why isn't this obvious discrimination being hated on?!?

Why is there no call for gender equality?!?!?

LMFAO!

*gasp*
They ran an ad campaign to gain publicity...

Winterapple -> RE: Anti-Gay Group Slams JCPenney over Father’s Day Ad (6/12/2012 7:24:25 AM)

It's a combination of social goals and money.
The organization is using the ads for publicity
every bit as much as Penney and for the same
goal to fill their coffers and get new members
like Penney's hopes to get customers.
This boycotting biz is their bread and butter.
I imagine the average moms who jump
onboard are doing it for social goals they
don't see the hand that's in their pocket.

I really can't be bothered to debate someone who thinks posting an article titled "Anti-Gay Group Slams JCPenney over Father’s Day Ad" is equivalent to horn tooting.
