Having started the "Phonies" thread, I thought an antithetical thread would be in order.

If it is non-pc to alert others to dangerous, dishonest, predatory members, then how pc would it be to celebrate those we admire??

Make up your own rules, but I would think one good rule is no partners!  No odes to your Dom/Sum.  Rather, mention people who stand out as good in your eyes, and why.

Would that pass the moderator test?  You could always leave off the name, sort of an Anonymous Hall of Fame...

First, it's easier to cite the famous celebrities because of their reputation and public exposure.  You can point to Vi's history and library and public classes, or someone's published books, or the committees they have worked on for events and all those other things.

The sucky ones stay in the shadows and are far harder to track to those not intimately involved.

Secondly, "bdsm celebrities" might be admired for certain things but have human fallacies like we all do.  They may also be a drunk, or bipolar, or filling some huge need for power due to insecurities.  The "respected leaders of the community" locally are generally the ones who happen to have been around awhile, volunteered a lot of their time to the scene, and who play with a lot of people.

But anyone active in the local scene in DC can tell you that any famous/well-known player in the scene has at least 3 other famous/well-known people talking about what an asshole they are.

Listing someone as being great in your (or anyone's) eyes isn't slander. ;-)

Well, this has the same problem the phonies list would have. The phonies would go make fake profiles just so they can come back and list themselves as BDSM gurus, experts, extrodinary whipsters etc. etc. This is the v/t world. If you want to know if someone is 'good'.. you really should take the time to get to know them offline. Watch them play, have coffee with them, see if they are consistent in deed and action. Then you'll have a real life list which you've created all on your own.

I call those sorts of people.. friends.

Well the larger issue with this is self-aggrandizement.

'Cause I sure as fuck am gonna pick me.

hello Dark,
that's my real point ,
because its true ,,we all drink tea but there are hundreds of  types..all kinds that you pretty much make in the same fashion.ie..steeping
our results are all different
being a real Master means you take those chances
being a real anything means you must simply experience it

Interesting responses, all.

I would put forward a couple of additional ideas:

-no system is perfect and cheaters abound, so that shouldn't stop you.
-"Celebreties" hadn't occurred to me, I was thinking of on-site members.
-won't the cheaters merely aid in exposing themselves as such?

I appreciate the thoughtful replies, as it's simply an intellectual exercise from my point of view.  I doubt many people with lives actually care all that much about their fame on this or any board.

I don't know.  I know of a lot of people who, if they said they thought I was 'great', would make me cringe.

I have to mention Merc and beth. Having become good friends with them, I admire them for their common sense and wisdom, and their ability to blend their bdsm life and their vanilla life and stay balanced. And because they are just really cool people.

For your and other's information, there is a group on Yahoo aptly named the BDSM Hall of Shame.  Go there and post to your heart's content, positive, negative, lukewarm or tepid.

If yahoo is not to your liking, to go MySpace.com with all the other little children and build your own slam page.

Just keep your OedipusRexIt litmus tests and junior high school popularity polls off of the boards at CM.

How old are you, anyway?  Age 10?

Damn it Estring! I was perusing this thread hoping NOT to find our names and if I did I was going to chastise the person because unless they've met us they should believe our on-line personae. After all as I represented previously, beth is a 5'5" 'adult baby', balding 60 year old male weighing 260 pounds; and I am his cross-dressing pre-op transsexual Dom (or would that make me a domme?) Despite what you think about our words and descriptions we are living in a rehab boarding house in El Segundo sitting in our dirty underwear, creating profiles, and posting BS to see if anyone would take it seriously.

But instead you, a person who we shared some GREAT times pops up!

Well - here's the compliment back at you! You and your's our in our 'Hall of Fame' of good people too.

But tell me - if we're such "good friends" why the hell haven't we seen each other lately! You Fraud!

We hope you and 'v' are doing great! Let' plan on making up for lost time soon! And thank you for your sentiment.

We've had a lot of these popularity contests already, and I don't really understand why they're any more useful than the shit lists.  The only difference is that they're not intended to be hurtful.  (But the shit-list writers think they have the best intentions too.)

Well, I may be young and idealistic, but I tend to believe only that which I have witnessed in real life. And even then, I sure as hell would not go out of my way to blacklist someone simply becase they did not live up to MY expectations. The same goes in the opposite direction. Just because someone DID live up to my expectations, I am not going to extol their virtues to another.

Is this popularity list supposed to aid us in some way? I am with Celeste on this one, get to know someone in the real world and then decide if they are a phony. Phonies are everywhere, they can just make multiple profiles online so it seems as though there are more of them on the internet.

Personally I would not consult a list of phonies or "popular" users in making a determination of who is worth talking to. I make that determination by how they come off in emails etc, and then if they seem genuine for awhile I will talk with them on the phone, and then I will arrange a date.... it is a multi-layered process for me.

Actually someone that made the list of non-faker would probably not appeal to me. I have a thing against dating people that are "popular" anyhow.

Just me and I could be wrong.

Personally ... I much prefer the Dungeon of Infamy  over the Hall of Fame.  The later seems so ummm Yuppish over the former.
