This is in the spirit of the old, "Match Game," for those who remember... The immediate stuff I needed to do is done.

So an order of checks was misprinted, and sent to a house I lived in several years back. The current occupant (let's call her Dumb Dora) gets somebody else's checks in the mail, and decides it is Christmas. Dumb Dora writes herself a big (felony-size) check, forges a signature, goes to a branch of my bank, and is required to put a thumb print on it to get her (my) cash.

How dumb does Dumb Dora have to be?

Sorry, Rich, you can't get away with just setting the stage and not telling us how it unfolded.

1. How far did she get before she was found out?
2. Who was responsible for the wrong address? You're lucky that Dora was too stupid to simply use the routing and check numbers to quietly access your account.
3. What are these "checks" you mention? Weren't they in use before cards?

I've done what I can do so far, Steve. I stopped at the grocery store after work Thursday, and the machine told me I had insufficient funds, when I swiped the card. The check she wrote was for more than I had in the account, but apparently there is a downside to being a 10 year customer with a good history, because the bank honored it.

The grocery store was right there in the same shopping center with my bank branch, and they actually unlocked the door and let me in after hours to get a block on the account. My wife was on the phone with their central fraud department at the same time.

Dumb Dora had only cashed the check a couple hours before, so we had to wait until Friday to see the image in their system and online. I was hoping it was just a data entry error, or something, but it was my check, with a signature that was nothing like mine.

The police report is filed. The bank has placed a stop payment on every check in the box. On Friday morning, after my paycheck had gone in by direct deposit (lucky she didn't get that too!) I pulled all the money, made the mortgage payment in cash, and redeposited the rest in my secondary account at another bank.

It's really frustrating right now, because this dodo still has all those checks, and God only knows when the deputies are going to knock on her door. I want to go over there myself, so firing off this thread gives me some sort of outlet for that energy.

We rented that house, and the landlord is still a friend, so he was able to confirm that the name on the check is in fact the current resident.

Many years ago, at a time when I was dirt poor, a box of somebody else's checks showed up in my mailbox. The girlfriend and I certainly made a fair number of, "Vegas, Baby!," jokes that night, and then I dropped the box off at a branch of the bank they were for the next day.

Dumber than a box of rocks, or bag of hammers just doesn't seem to do this one justice though.

Damn! I have her phone number. I've checked out her facebook page. I really want to do... something, besides wait to hear from the police.

I spent 1/2 hour on hold, listening to their broken hold system playing the first 5 seconds of "Fur Elise," over and over before I gave up on that for a while.

That's how I got transferred to terminal hold. Grrrr.

It's Sunday, and I imagine that the sort of crime which caused us to get the hell out of that neighborhood is going to be a higher priority than busting Dumb Dora before the detectives get the paperwork on Monday.

Both our names are on those checks, so even though they are all blocked by the bank, if she has the sort of contacts or abilities to fabricate a fake i.d., she might still be able to dig her hole even deeper.

The bank has been very insistent that a third-party handles the check order processing, even though it was all done on their website.

I am really sorry that this happened to you and that you have to deal with the hassle of it as well as jumping through various hoops. I hope that LE gets their ducks in a row soon.

TheHeretic,the wheels of justice grind slow but very fine at times.At least they have a real name and address on Dumb Dora and you found out as soon as you did about this.This one sounds like the old joke about they can't be out of money,they still have checks.Hopefully DD will soon face justice and her day of reckoningand you'll get your life back to where it was before this.

Thanks. I'm just trying to keep my sense of humor intact, my poor impulses contained, and be glad I decided to stop and pick up a few things at the store Thursday night. It's going to be an irritating hassle.

Still, how could she possibly think she was going to get away with it, even if the priorities of law enforcement are letting her par-tay this weekend?

Where I want to be parked is at the branch manager's desk, where Dora cashed the check, and not leaving without an excellent understanding of precisely why the signatures were not compared, before the teller started counting out the Benjamins.

Is that something you can do tomorrow?
They need to give you a reason why you should trust them and a reason to justify your using that account at their bank again.

Also tomorrow, you could pay a visit to the DA or State Attorney's office.

It will probably facilitate the cops being in touch, although as I understand it they pretty much hate that kind of thing.
You can always tell each of them that you are just following through on both the "Law and Order" side of things.

I was already away from work several hours on Friday, but I certainly can and will call the branch and make an appointment, Angelika.

I also still have the card from the DA who was assigned when I was getting death threats at work, so I might see what he thinks.

My time on the Japanese islands was spent quite a bit further north, but I don't think I ever encountered that, LOL.
