"Mr. Forbush, I'm here to fine you for not voting last November when you were comatose in the hospital."

The doc wrote the prescription on the absentee ballot slip, I was framed!!!

mnottertail -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 3:01:02 PM)

I highly doubt the OP and what is said.  He has been known to make shit up and present it as fact, and thats why its always 'said' or 'live' and then you find out it is asswipe.

I am going to say it wasn't real, or it has been slanted and out of context so heavily as not to be recognized by anyone not possessing tinfoil hats and praying to ron paul.

Mandates are the focus of the Left and socialism.

You do not have the slightest clue as to what the terms 'left' and 'socialism' stand for.
Mandates are the focus of fascism.
Fascism is associated with the far right, even though isolated fascist ideas are occasionally entertained by random people out there.
Fascist ideas stem either from fascist ideology or from plain stupidity,
which is the same as saying that fascist ideas stem from plain stupidity.

Just now, all hosts on the MSNBC show "The Cycle", proposed that voting be "mandated", that voting be mandatory by law for all U.S. citizens.
I'm am not surprised. Mandates are the focus of the Left and socialism.
What say you?

Only if there is a NONE OF THE ABOVE box to check.

Voting is kinda like a restaurant menu at the only restaurant in town. You'll order (vote) for what you like or will tolerate (lesser of two evils).

Voting is your civil duty as a US Citizen. PERIOD! If you dont like it, maybe you dont need the perks that go with being a US Citizen?

Would be nice to have some system that shows who actually voted and who didnt. I have no problem with someone voting against the canidate that I voted in favor of. I do have a problem with someone that makes up an excuse for not voting, THEN, bitchs for the next so many years until the next election that 'this' or 'that' is not to their liking. I wish such individuals would just be quiet; as they were given a chance to speak their minds with their vote and FAILED!

I look at voting for a president like a job hiring. Because THAT is what it is. Should be the optimistic view that the best person gets the job.

A liberal lecturing about duty. Now there is a laugh.

Here is the problem I have with the expressions like voting is a "sacred obligation" or a "civil duty:" The words invoke a delusion. It is a simple step from saying we have a voting obligaton or duty to the State to saying we have a duty to die for our country. And that kind of thinking lays the fertile ground for politicians to slide us into needless and unjustified wars. We are dismayed when we find ourselves in a never ending state of war supported by a military budget larger than any other five nations. I think we need to re-examine the language we use to describe our roles in society. Words establish a framework for actions that are later regretable. Then, people wonder innocently how they were so easily led into war. When their eyes are opened to the criminality or carelessness of their leaders they excuse themselves by saying they were lied to. Not all, but many set themselves up to believe the lies.

Prolly would be better to give voters a small tax cut for voting.....much in the same way folks who buy health insurance get a small tax cut.

And like those who don`t buy insurance......folks who don`t vote don`t get the tax cut.

This way cons can complain that they`re being forced to vote or will be persecuted by the IRS.[:D]

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 5:26:52 PM)

I say mandate voting right after mandating having someone decent to vote for, rather than the lesser of the evils.

So, in other words, never!

Didn't the healthcare mandate originate with the hardly liberal Heritage Foundation? And wasn't it the linchpin of Romneycare in Massachusetts?

The most intrusive of all mandates, of course, has been the requirement, at various points in our history, to serve in the military, and registration for Selective Service is still required today, no? I'm not sure that was a particularly liberal idea.

No, voting should not be mandated.

Owner59 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 6:14:52 PM)

How about I see your voter mandate and raise you a mandated voter registration, upon getting a driver`s license........?

They make ya frick`n register for the selective service(draft).......don`t they?

BamaD -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 6:22:18 PM)

There are a couple of problems with mandatory voting.

One voting is a right if both candidated are equal in you mind why vote.
No candidate will ever agree with you 100% so unless you arethe candidate it will always be the lesser of evils, we are talking about poloticians after all.
We already have too many people voting who don't have a clue.
It's none of the government business if I do or do do not vote, I do but it is none of their business.

Owner59 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 6:30:01 PM)

And who are you..............to think that?! Speak for yourself.........Holy fuck`n shit.......

Jesus if that ain`t the scariest most fucking arrogant thing I`ve ever heard......

Tacitus1 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 6:53:08 PM)

No, you don't have a RIGHT to vote. It's a privilege granted by the state you live in. Google Bush v. Gore if you want all the legal language. It's NOT in the Constitution.

We let too many people vote. This is a republic, not a democracy, even if the ass clown in the White House (the supposed con law professor), can't define the difference.

Owner59 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 7:01:29 PM)

Can you tell us why they call it the "Voting Rights Act"?

Thanks in advance........

Why?

Tacitus1 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 7:26:01 PM)

What it's title was has very little to do with what it IS. All it did was extend the 14th Amendment to voting. If the franchise is granted to one man, it's granted to all men who are otherwise equal. If a state wanted to, it could restrict voting to only people who owned a certain value of real estate and it would be legal, insofar as men, women, all races and creeds were treated equally. If a million in assessed value was the limit for the franchise, anyone passing that bar could vote.

Aaron Burr was accused of being a Democrat; his duel with Hamilton resulted. Democrat was an insult to those who witnessed the French Revolution, it meant being and advocate of mob rule and lawlessness.

TheHeretic -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 7:27:16 PM)

That PMSNBC should be advocating for this only illustrates just how isolated in a bubble of liberal thought that network's crew is. They think they would win. And yeah, lefties do have a big time authoritarian streak, they aren't good at hiding.

While I would like to see much higher participation in elections, I would oppose any sort of mandate, or incentive, beyond the little, "I Voted," stickers, I line up down the side of my computer case. Presently, we get a solid sample of the people who give enough of a shit to turn out.

One real disincentive to such a move is that it forces the reframing of our political discurse from the disgusting level it currently occupies, to a single digit lowest common denominator.

Enshrined between the lines of the first nine Amendments, and held aloft in a blaze of glory in the 10th, is our right to be left the fuck alone. Outside of Disneyland (where I start a day by collecting speedpasses) we are not a nation that lines up very well, because we are told to. Especially since cell phones became widespread.

Tacitus1 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 7:36:05 PM)

By the way, when the VRA expires, no who can vote the day before will be prohibited from voting the day after, contrary to what Al Sharpton claims. It only gets the federal government in the person of the Accessory General out of the job of "supervising" local elections to insure "fairness".

Tacitus1 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 7:39:31 PM)

The current draft law was promoted and signed into law by Jimmy Carter, and passed by a democrat house and senate. Yes, forcing people to do what's good for the country IS a liberal idea.

Tacitus1 -> RE: Should voting be MANDATED? (6/27/2012 7:47:51 PM)

No, fascism is LEFT wing, just to the right of communism. Private ownership under government control leads to things like GE, a huge corporate donor to Obama and the democrats getting all those "green" jobs contracts and a huge subsidy.
