She and I are pretty much Luddites when it comes to comp tech, although I am slightly more familiar with it than she is (my Mom calls me for tch advice..love the woman, but REALLY???)

re: OP

I'm curious about something you wrote regarding first hurdles. For some folks the first hurdle is making sure there is compatible communication. Not everyone is going to pass that hurdle and there is no guarentee that those whom do pass will bounce over the next one.

If 'u r so hot' gets a response of 'thx, u r hot 2' - peas in a pod. They both get to attempt to jump over the next hurdle.

If 'u r so hot' gets a response of 'You're not what I seek' then what's the issue?

What's the first hoop that you make someone jump through? Someone's Height? Weight? Hair color? Age? Race? Political or religious leaning? Gender? Sexual orientation? Career? Ability/desire to have children? Must love dogs and have pot roast for dinner at Mother's on Sunday night?

Something else?

Is your first hurdle better or worse than having a first hoop be one in which grammar, spelling and punctuation are important?

Last question: Who decided the nature of 'your' first hurdle?

This article makes a great point about bad grammar and personals profiles.

http://thegrammarvandal.wordpress.com/2008/10/09/online-dating-and-bad-grammar/

And here's a bad grammar example from an article about bad grammar I found that seems to give an idea of just what kind of bad grammar most of us are speaking about. This is the type of emails I get on a daily basis. Why would I want to respond to something like this??

"It seems us Americans ain't talkin' too good, don't write worth a lick and are worser with e-mails. Our grammar, punctuation and spelling are/is abysmal."

but surely there are more important criteria in this lifestyle than knowing the difference between 'your' and 'you’re'.

You mean like being intelligent enough to know the difference between "your" and "you're"?

Personally, I wanted someone that was intelligent and able to communicate regardless of the method.

Here's part two of that whole thing: How long does it take to go back and proof read what you've written? A minute maybe? You're saying that you're unwilling to spend an extra minute to be concerned about how you're viewed. It's about effort. And I'm not willing to be with someone that doesn't make the effort.

What she said.

TNDommeK -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/1/2012 5:14:51 PM)

There is a store I go into to buy music and they sell posters as well. There is this TXTSPK poster that explains all the different meanings for each abbv. I just couldn't remember all of it.
However, I think I could deal with that a bit better than the people who type like this: h3ll0 thi$ i$ K3llz. WTF!

Exactly! And I never make such efforts. I'm sure my postings are laden with various grammatical and typographical errors. I don't find such things important unless it's bad enough to hinder reading comprehension. Which means that you and I would be a bad match for each other... just like a bajillion other things.

What I don't get is why kalthus thinks that is remarkable in any way. Some folks are fussy about grammar. Others??? not so much.

You know what kalthus. I agree with you. Or, wait.. I'd say it differently. I find people who like to snipe at other people on the internet over comma placement to be unsuitable partners for me. To me it looks like the "You're stupid, nyah nyah!" school of debate. Unlike you, I just don't generalize that to anything beyond myself and who I'd want for a friend or lover.

These are My feelings, exactly. I know very well that I make mistakes, including grammatical ones. I've had people call Me on them as well. Yet, I really can't recall the last time anyone accused Me of being a poor Dominant or even a bad top. I'll even cop to making mistakes in those areas, too. Perfection, or the illusion of such, doesn't suit Me.

Whatever mistakes y'all make, they've not been noticeable to me and certainly do not rise to the level of hindering reading comprehension. Quite possibly what the OP's examples find offensive is this sort of thing:

'u r so hot' or " h3ll0 thi$ i$ K3llz"

or this:

..torture means masturabate for u??????.... well, if i wud had to see porn films, the same can be done wid u too.. u did u join this site... if u dont know hw to reply,, btr dnt reply..

AurumCaminus -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/1/2012 6:04:30 PM)

This is just another example of how raging against the clueless in profile text winds up being completely counterproductive.

Yeah, all you women get flooded with messages of exceptionally low quality by males who demonstrate their complete hopelessness at every turn.

However, in order to see your rant about how much you don't want to talk to them, they would have to actually read your profile text to begin with, which you already know that they aren't doing in the first place.

Stupid people, fakes, liars, and other undesirables are not deterred by such things. And if they were, do you actually want to inform them how to get you to take them seriously?

The only guys who are deterred, are the simple regular guys who are self aware enough to realize that they aren't perfect, have flaws, make mistakes, and typically get dismissed out of hand for not living up to some unrealistic ideal.

The population of Super-Doms is pretty small to begin with, and if you are holding out only for one of them... good luck, you better be the perfect sub.

If, however, you are also one of those flawed, imperfect, actual human beings, then your rants against the idiots are only going to discourage the very population of guys that you are most likely to find a compatible match with.

Ignoring the stupid people involves genuinely ignoring them, not filling your profile text with rants about how much you hate them. Even worse is to send them messages blasting them for their stupidity, which is only giving them the attention that they want to begin with, thus rewarding bad behaviour.

Dammit. I just had to go and read that thread. I tend to write how I speak like LadyH, sometimes "intellectual babble", usually with a lot of obscenities, sometimes sarcastic.

Though reading the quote from the above link, man, it is really damned tempting to use that as my profile info. It's the bestest quote ever...

A bit off topic, but I need to add something for NBMG: You keep getting better and better; it's been a delight being able to track your progression as a dominant female. There is a radiance to you these days, you just exude strong female fully attuned to your dominant voice, yet not in the least afraid to show a softer side.

Thank you so much! *hugs*

I would like to point out that there is a vast difference between Jeff or Greedy or Lady Pact responding to a thread, and someone's first email.

Again, your first email is like your intro job interview. You want it to be as good as possible so that they write you back, or call you in to interview with the big boss.

When I'm here, talking to friends, I just need it readable. I don't need it perfect. But if this was my resume, I would want it perfect. When a male here writes a female, it is exactly like a company posting a job opening and getting hundreds of resumes. They will look through the resumes to find a reason to toss it, because there are so many more that are equally capable. Women here do just that. They have to, in order to reduce the number of emails to a reasonable amount to weed through. Aurum, we know damn well we aren't perfect. But if you want a sub who will try her best to please you, then you had better be showing your best side also. Because we deserve that as much as you do.

Males here who think that they don't need to make a good impression make a bad one. Those are your options. And this is very different than chatting on a thread.

For the record, anyone who was hoping I'd make a good impression via that sort of thing is very obviously not a match for me. Heck, I was eating cornichons off a knife at a restaurant the second time I met Carol. She asserts that she watched that pretty closely and was astonished that I could do it with class. All I know is had she ruled me out for such a thing then we would not have been compatible. I remain pretty content with presenting my actual self to employers and life partners then letting the chips fall where they may. So far, that's worked out pretty well for me.

Now... as was previously suggested... if we're not talking about things like excessive use of ellipses but rather a mangling of the language such that reading becomes near impossible then I think I'd understand better.

And those who have the slightest idea what making a good impression looks like doesn't need to see a three paragraph rant about how text speak is stupid to reach that conclusion.

Employers don't put, "No Text Speak on Resumes," in their job opening advertisements. They just trash them.

Sadly, it is becoming more and more common.

Yet companies rightly hold the opinion that commenting on it in their requests for applications won't reduce the stupidity that comes their way, it will only make them look like they are an unprofessional organization.

One had this written under "Sex"

Usually alone.
