Hmm....I hate it when people use dyslexia as an excuse.

I have dyslexia. On a really bad day I can type out entire paragraphs completely backwards. Let me tell you that is a PISSER when I am on a roll and I have to take the time to retype my entry. On a normal day sometimes a word or five will slip through the cracks but I always make it a point to check before sending things out. Misspelling "Your and You're" has nothing to do with being dyslexic, it is either being illiterate or lazy. I choose to think people are just lazy when they do that.

And that pisses me off because I AM dylexic and I have worked damned hard at making things look right for the people who do not have the same issue. I adapted by doing better than anyone around me at the time. I read 1000 WPM with a 97% comprehension JUST so I can deal with my dyslexia and translate it back before anyone sees the mistakes.
In my view dyslexia is not a handicap in anyway. It has made me work harder, faster, and reminded me that proof-reading is something we all should do, with or without this "handicap".

As far as people being grammar nazi's, well once you get a few letters using only text-speak, having someone take the time to write a concise and thoughtful letter makes you really appreciate them spending the extra time. And personally I would want anyone I planned to spend some time with to be a person who thought I was worth the extra time.

I guess you'll never date anyone with Dyslexia then!

Missokyst -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/2/2012 8:22:46 AM)

No. They are simply deciding to whom they will respond. Emails, letters, ect. which require written words are just an intro, they are not the bulk of any phase of getting to know someone. I actually like to talk to people face to face and that requires no spelling at all, before bottoming to them. Any man I choose to submit to will likely have a similar education to my own. I am picky.

I agree they do not say it's the sole criteria, but they are drawing a very strong connection between literacy and safety which, I hope I have shown is not entirely justified.

Here's the thing.....write your responses in Microsoft Word. It not only has a spell-check but also a grammar check that will catch your grammar mistakes, so no that is not an excuse. Sorry.

And please don't give me the excuse that you don't have it on your computer or you don't use it. Get it and use it. If you had a handicap and you needed something like a wheelchair or special tool, wouldn't you make sure you have it so that you could lead a normal life?

then specify open office, or say a word like program, by insisting and specifying microsoft word its suggesting in order for anybody to be allowed on the internet they must hand over $120 and its just wrong, and it also renders your argument that youre looking for intelligence total bullshit because even the biggest idiot with a large enough cash flow would be able to sound smart because they would have a grammar check that they would use constantly. either spelling and grammar is important for understanding or its important for finding intelligence, the former means if you seriously cant understand somebody saying youre without the apostrophe then youre either just looking for an excuse to be angry or you have a reading disability, the latter means that if youre looking for intelligence while at the same time ordering people to pay for a grammar checker then youre just going to run into morons with a bank account, take your pick, either way its pretty damn stupid

Speaking of anger, your anger level is pretty funny.

1) No one ordered anyone to purchase a grammar checker. They merely stated that Word has one built in. If you're not bright enough to figure out that there is more than one word processor program in the world, it's not our fault. A simple Google search is your friend.

2) Effort counts. If you're not willing to put in the effort to take an extra few seconds to double check what you've written, it says a lot about how you approach life.

And those who have the slightest idea what making a good impression looks like doesn't need to see a three paragraph rant about how text speak is stupid to reach that conclusion.

Employers don't put, "No Text Speak on Resumes," in their job opening advertisements. They just trash them.

Precisely. And the women you are writing to will trash those kinds of cold emails also.

Beyond that, if you find someone using a negative in their profile to be a turn off, then don't write them. You already know you're not compatible.

But trying to dictate what other people write in their profiles, or what pictures they post, is like trying to teach a pig to sing. Wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Dude, if I have to TELL you there are other programs that do the same thing, there's no saving you from yourself then.

I will give you another freebie though. Google has an online version that does the same thing and for FREE!!!

Oh, one more thing. Step away from the computer. You're not ready to date yet.

Some days I think there are more children on here than adults.

What's beautiful about this sort of post (for someone like m'sef who actually DOES care about spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax....) is....everyone is sooooooo careful about their spelling, they check it at least 3 times before pushing enter :)

(And for those who did....tank ewe).

imdmb -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/2/2012 5:21:09 PM)

honestly, yes, i am a bit angry, the part i put in bold from littlewonder says if you dont own this specific product and you arent somebody who knows every single rule and every single exception to every single rule then you have to buy this one specific product thats overpriced (evidenced that its overpriced by all the free versions)

sorry, i am, but growing up how i did, this post struck me as classist, i dont think thats how you meant it but i saw red and im having a pretty hard time letting this one go

As a lousy typist, I find Word's spell-checker very handy. But, imho as a professional editor, the grammar-checker is largely useless. Ymmv.

I use Safari as my browser at home, and it flags misspelled words whenever I post here at CM or on Facebook.
