Actually, I use dialect frequently when I write. It's a deliberate choice, one often based on using a less formal wording to take some of the sting out of what I'm posting. :-)

yes, and i get that, im just trying to make a point that rules can only carry you too far before you end up being restricted

TNDommeK -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/2/2012 10:53:03 PM)

I type how I talk most of the time.

Kana -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/2/2012 11:09:34 PM)

And there is a distinct line between being restricted and inconsiderate.

Look, I ain't got a dog in his fight either way so I don't care much.
Buuuuuuuut, this is basic stuff.
Like it or not, folks judge us on how we present ourselves, some more than others.
But no doubt about it, its gonna happen.
Now this is the interwebz, and I'm an anarchist by nature and I hate rules, which is good, cuz the webz, it's pretty much wide open (Within the boundaries of TOS, but of course. Wanna play in someone else's sandbox, it's only fair to have to follow the house rules) and sure, anyone can post anything written as well, or as poorly as they chose.
And others are equally free to judge em on it and act accordingly and treat them in kind.
Which I happen to love.
So hey, some idjit wants to come on here, look like a fool, talk in textspeak, go right ahead.
No skin off my back. I'm not the one getting hurt or making myself look stupid.

(But I also have the right to mock them for it...and I will if I feel like it, mostly because I'm a dick that way and I like provoking folks and every once in a while few things can be more fun than poking a moron with a stick...cuz you know, I'm a sadist and all and such things amuse me greatly. :-p)

But don't be getting all upset or hurt or defensive. If someone intentionally and knowingly takes a socially inappropriate action, a faux pas so to speak,, they can't really complain if they get consequences. Act like a moron, expect to get treated like one. That's human nature. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Or to go all Forrest Gump on ya's, "Stupid is as stupid does."

Now I'm not denying the fact that there can be extenuating circumstances such as were outlined in a dissent above. And some of those are valid. But ya know what, tell folks about those reasons, lead with em, and generally it's been my experience here that folks are pretty understanding.

imdmb -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/3/2012 12:29:19 AM)

yes, there is a difference, im just trying to see who understands there is a difference and who will decide to go ahead and fight about having perfect grammar in an imperfect cobbled together language

PrincessDonna11 -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/3/2012 12:32:14 AM)

More food for thought:
George Orwell, Politics and the English Language

...Each of these passages has faults of its own, but, quite apart from avoidable ugliness, two qualities are common to all of them. The first is staleness of imagery; the other is lack of precision. The writer either has a meaning and cannot express it, or he inadvertently says something else, or he is almost indifferent as to whether his words mean anything or not.

I only date kinky people, who I have found on vanilla sites such as OKCupid. But I need to see if their definition of kinky is limited, as I prefer a broader repertoire. So when I get a response like:

I like smacking a girl around and tying her up and making her cum 10 times in a row! I do it all

I'm not drawn to respond.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are people such as Kana, who paints such a vivid and precise picture that I'd be terrified of responding.

You too? There's been a few times he has sent a shiver of fear up my spine...and I don't even belong to him.

Here's the thing:

If you were going out for a speed dating event, you wouldn't show up in a stained T-shirt, torn jeans and body odor.
If you were doing a voice ad for a dating service, you wouldn't mumble, spit and swear.
So, if you're looking for a mate in a venue where your only manner of selling yourself are the words on the screen, why wouldn't you make the to portray yourself in the best possible light?

GreedyTop -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/3/2012 7:36:59 AM)

Kana, RS, and Lady P are all folks whose written words make me shiver (I have yet to decide if the shivers are entirely in fear, or if there is "something else" going on)...LOL

We aren't fighting about it. We've explained that when the only way you have to sell yourself is through the written word, that not writing well means nobody will buy.

You have dyslexia, put it into your signature line so people will know. Start off your email by apologizing for mistakes made as a result of that. Do not expect people who receive gibberish to automatically assume you have a ld. They won't. They will more likely assume you're uneducated or abusing substances, if not both.

Don't want to do that? Then don't use an online dating site. Join your local community and meet people in real life instead where your inability to write won't matter.

There are all kinds of options you can use to improve your odds of finding someone. But if you consistently pick the one that doesn't work especially after being told why it doesn't work, then you present yourself as someone who fits Einstein's definition of insanity.

Submissive does not mean "stupid and easy".

I love you OsideGirl. You say what I'm thinking in most of your posts. *sigh*

im just saying there has to be a line here, that if youre expecting perfect grammar in english you havent studied the language at all. english is a language that hides in a dark alley and beats up other languages so it can rifle thru* the other languages pockets for words. im not saying we should open the floodgates, i will never say textspeak is the way to go, im not saying that leet is the way to go unless youre in a board based on leet, im just saying that we should understand that perfection doesnt exist in this particular language. words should be spelled right or as close as you can get (seriously, there are some extra Ls that i didnt realize existed, stupid YIM), and they should be in the order that you intend them to be for best understanding (which is possible in english if you dont follow grammar too close, just try that in latin "scott dog ball throw to" is seriously a sentence from what i understand) seeing as you want to understand what somebody means without ambiguity sometimes grammar rules can get in the way

once again, really, i will never advocate leet on a non leet board, and i will never advocate txtspch unless youre actualy on a phone (dammit YIM! theres one of those Ls again! you have failed me YIM!). bleh, now im annoyed at YIM, imma wander off and gripe

*and thru doesnt come up with a little red line, at this point it has become an accepted word, so bite me :P

DesFIP -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/3/2012 7:19:35 PM)

imdmb. You can say people shouldn't as much as you want. The reality is that they do. Figure out how to be successful in the world that exists, don't insist people change to fit your idea of an ideal world. Because they won't.

And please use paragraphs. Your posts are difficult to read and as a result, we skip a lot of what you write. Just as we do when people choose little tiny font or light colors. If it's too difficult to read, we don't bother. Is that what you want? To write in a way that people won't bother reading what you write or do you want to communicate with others, not just talk to yourself?

imdmb -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/3/2012 10:07:56 PM)

DesFIP. youre absolutely right and im sorry, i keep on going on tangents and not even realizing how much ive put down. im usually much better at breaking these up

You do realize that by not using the English language correctly, those who have only learnt correct English language (e.g foreigners) will not be able to understand a lot of your written word? Is that deliberate or do you just not have the ability to use proper written words?

Kana -> RE: Grammar Nazi fetish (7/4/2012 3:54:16 AM)

It is, like most everything I do,-

1-Deliberate
2-Something that operates on multiple levels for multiple reasons
3-Done because it amuses me
4-A question that I already answered up-thread :-)

Edited to add that I don't mind if folks judge me on this...go right the fuck ahead, it won't matter squat to moi...but I also ain't (hah!) starting threads complaining about folks taking whacks at me for improper usage either
