I think is Facebook is a really selfish company. They only enhance the website to there desires. As soon as a new social network comes out that has much more to offer, I get everyone I know to join it as best as possible.

Well of course it's a selfish company. It's not a non-profit. lol The reason people go into business is to be selfish. Of course they enhance to their own desires. Who wouldn't? If I owned a business of course I would enhance it to my desires first, others second unless I think if I put others first and it would make my company fail but then it would no longer be the business that I desired and I'd probably sell it off. Plus he really has no competition right now so of course he can do what he wants. I would do the same. It's a business, not a charity.

You have still make business over other peoples desires. Except the founder chooses his own, because he has a certain picture in his head. There only in the web industry, it's not like there manufacturing something. It's easy to generate revenue with other peoples desires, you just have to be a creative entrepreneur and a businessman.

Never had a facebook account. I think me and perhaps one monk in the mountains of the Himalayan Range.

Well...you, me and that one monk. :P

So the reason you would start a business is not for your own selfish motives but for the desires of others. Interesting. Now if I was starting a charity then I would but my own business? I'm doing it for the ability to do whatever I want to do in my own way and the money, not because it's what everyone else wants it. Yeah, I'm selfish.Sue me.

I have ideas for businesses and I know exactly how I want them to look and feel and be. Now I may take suggestions but that doesn't mean I will use that suggestion if I don't like it or I feel it may be useful to me in some way. Fuck how everyone else wants it. If they want it their way then I suggest they start their own business.

I don't have a problem with it. I have not converted to timeline, I have my privacy settings set to the highest possible and it's provided me with a way of keeping in contact with people (family & friends). Oh, and it's a great way to waste time, much like CM/CC. [;)]

littlewonder -> RE: Would you leave Facebook if a better social network came out? (7/1/2012 2:32:23 PM)

Same here. I don't mind FB. I have the my settings on private, changed my email back and don't have any problems with it. No matter what site you are on, you should periodically check your settings. To do otherwise is naive.

Sometimes I wonder why the default settings can't be a little more private then just being in the "middle" sorta speak. It would build some sort of confidence in their users.

Because FB's entire business model is based on exploiting your personal information to sell to advertisers. [8|]

What do you mean? You can set certain things to be private, to friends only, certain friends only and public. You can pick and choose which items individually or altogether.

There are a lot of sites that do this, though. A lot of places I shop online end up dropping cookies on my computer, so I see their ads when opening my email, etc. Doesn't bother me - I find the benefit of those sites outweigh the downside.

One other thing I use FB for is since I've turned into quite the Zumba-holic...I've linked up with so many different instructors/classes this way, met some great people in those classes who I've become friends with, and now when I have some free time I can check their pages and find out where there's a class near me. I found 2 great weekend classes this way, and a master class near the Mister's house that I was able to attend.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Would you leave Facebook if a better social network came out? (7/2/2012 10:25:06 PM)

When my son was still a minor, that was how I checked up on what he was doing. All his friends as well, since they were my "friends" on there as well. Just this weekend, when I went to the shore for the weekend with my son's girlfriend and my granddaughter (took the girlfriend for her birthday and to meet my cousins), a couple of my son's and her friends came down to celebrate her birthday, and talk to one of the guys about how I kept up on how he was doing through facebook. He had no problem with it at all, even seemed kind of glad I kept an eye on him since he lost his own mom a few years back.

It's also how I keep up with my cousin's daughter and youngest son, and that son's girlfriend. I'm very close with them, and my cousin's daughter knows she can talk to me about things she might not be ready to talk to her parents about and unless I think she is doing something I think might be dangerous or harmful, she knows I will hold her confidence.

Funny thing is, my best friend who does live in another country with major time difference, I never talk to on facebook. We email and she calls me every couple of months, always on my birthday, and always on Christmas, and somehow always when I need her the most, she just knows to call me, lol.

Me? I rarely post on Facebook. More of a "lurker," posting only once in a blue moon. Recently, when I couldn't figure out how to turn off the (free) GPS on my new phone, I posted about it, saying how I was now doomed to hear "re-directing route" until I died, lol.

ETA:  Oh, and I didn't vote and don't plan to.  Not an option I find fits my decision, and honestly, just the way you keep "telling" people to vote makes me not want to.

littlewonder -> RE: Would you leave Facebook if a better social network came out? (7/2/2012 11:43:46 PM)

My daughter never checks her email for weeks at a time sometimes so when I want to send her links for jobs I send them through FB. It's the only way I know that she will get them in a timely manner. I like FB for keeping up with my church and our daily schedules. I just had a friend from back in Allentown contact me on FB last night. It was nice to hear from him since we were good friends there. It's nice to find out how he's doing and joke around about the stuff we always did before when we hung out. It's like having a friend here since I don't know anyone yet here, without him actually being here.

Solidman03 -> RE: Would you leave Facebook if a better social network came out? (7/3/2012 8:16:46 PM)

I know, but the original default should be private enough for people. Don't you think?

littlewonder -> RE: Would you leave Facebook if a better social network came out? (7/3/2012 8:28:46 PM)

why? It takes 5 seconds to change it and I don't keep everything private on my page. I don't care what the defaults are because I'm going to go in and change them anyway the first 5 minutes after I register for it. Plus I check my settings at least every couple of weeks to make sure they're still where I want them.

The reason it doesn't default to private is because that's not why FB was created. The whole purpose of FB from the beginning was for it to be accessed by anyone and for anyone at all to see what was posted. The only reason they have other settings is because people complained that they didn't want everyone to see. I think Zuckerburg changed it hesitantly due to pressure.
