If you took my yearly salary and doubled it, I would still be considered "poverty." However, I still pay all of my bills by myself. I've fully furnished several homes since turning 18. I've traveled fairly well and fairly regularly. Never to Europe, but all over the States. I've never taken a handout from my friends, my family, or the government.

That would mean you're making less than $5,585/year.

Bullshit.

I wondered what the poverty amount was for a single person, but I did not feel like looking it up. Thanks!

Granted, it could be done. But this young lady is not living by herself.

I've traveled fairly well and fairly regularly. Never to Europe, but all over the States. I've never taken a handout from my friends, my family, or the government. In fact, when someone needs money, they have a tendency to come to me first. Mostly because, I'd rather have to eat Ramen for three months straight than see someone else lose their car or house or whatever.

It is because of this, that I have a HUGE problem with people who do nothing but complain. You complain about money. You complain about taxes. You complain about extra fees at the airport. You complain about rising gas prices. You complain about the cost of your insurance, your water bill, your groceries, hell you even complain about the price of a Big Mac! And somehow it is always the government's fault.

Sweetheart, the government isn't responsible for everything ya know. And they can't fix everything. Get your priorities in order, make a damned budget for yourself, stick to it, and, for the love of God, STOP COMPLAINING! If I can make half as much as the cap for "poverty" and still be doing alright, you can too.

The above post sounds suspiciously like a...complaint! :D

I'm guessing the OP lives at home and doesn't pay rent or contribute financially to the household. I'm guessing too the personal bills are her cell phone, gas for the car that her parents bought her, and possibly the insurance too.

I can't help but be curious as to her definitions of the words "handout", "fully furnished", etc. :D

A little over 11K.

Ah so you make enough to get all your taxes back... possibly a tiny bit extra with earned income...

I have furnished more than one house... www.freecycle.org is amazing

every car I have owned I paid cash for

I own no credit cards

I owe no loans.

Brave, strong words from a 22 year old. Never get sick.. never have cancer... never lose a job to downsizing.

You, my dear, and walking around with your holier-than-thou attitude.. never hit rock bottom through no fault of your own.

Erm.. I make little enough to get most of my taxes back.
I too have furnished more than one house.. Not through freecycle. Never heard of it.
I've only owned one car, but yeah.. that was paid for in cash.
I too don't have any credit cards or loans..

I prefer to think of my attitude as a Better-Than-Some attitude. Because, the truth of it is, I know for a fact that I am. I have worked incredibly hard for every single thing I have accomplished. I understand that some people need help to get where they need to be in life, and I don't condemn them for it. I do, however, applaud those who do it on their own.

tazzygirl -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 9:20:59 PM)

And yet you seemed to have missed the calls of bullshit on your claims.

KaleidoKenlyn -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 9:29:43 PM)

Oh for Pete's sake. I hadn't finished reading through every new post before I started responding. Sure, we can discuss my specific bills and salary. I make about 6K. So, sure I would be *just* above the poverty line. My bad. I didn't look it up when I started this. My bills include half utilities and half rent. I have a roommate. I also pay for my phone and gas. I don't have cable. Internet is split.

500 utilities, rent, phone, gas?

thats 6k a year alone.

We havent started on clothes, repairs, personal needs, ect.

KaleidoKenlyn -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 9:51:34 PM)

The rent is 250. My half is 125. Internet is 20. My half is 10. Water is about 30. My half is 15. Electric is about 50. My half is 25. My phone is 25 a month. And I put 40 in the tank every month, give or take. That's roughly half my pay. I put some aside from every paycheck as well, so that when I do want to do something fun, I can.

tazzygirl -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 9:56:57 PM)

If your rent is only 250 for two people... dont ever move.

Your bills are not even remotely reality based.

Hahahahaha... kids.

KaleidoKenlyn -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 10:01:41 PM)

Yes, that is my rent. And those are my bills. And when I want something better, I will get more hours at work. I don't work much and I don't care to. I work enough to cover my needs. I'm 22 and I behave like one. When I need a better living situation, I will do what it takes to make it happen. I have in the past.

I don't really see why being a "kid" is such a bad thing. I'm really not a fan of it when that word is used as an insult. I love being my age. I'm pretty happy with how everything in my life is at the moment.

littlewonder -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 10:11:21 PM)

Wait didn't you just make another thread complaining about people not sticking up for what they believe in?

Does anyone else see the irony??

Musicmystery -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (6/30/2012 10:12:31 PM)

I assume your reply isn't meant for me.

littlewonder -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (7/1/2012 1:13:56 AM)

no...for the op.

As for the op....you're the same age as my daughter and she has two other roomies and her part of the rent is a little under 300. I think their rent is around 900. Where the hell do you live that rent is only 250??? I'm going to assume it's some kind of college housing? If so, don't ever move!!!

Then my daughter has a car that she paid cash for but she works 45 minutes each way so she fills her tank about 2-3 days a week. That's not cheap and then there are the repairs she has to make to it and the tires need replaced. Then she has two cats to care for, food to buy, college books, medical bills that her insurance doesn't pay or only pays only so much, furnishings for her place, cable and internet. She is barely scraping by and the only thing I pay for is her cell phone and that's only until she finishes college and gets a better paying job.

So just wait until you're in the real world and you have children, real rent, real bills to pay, college loans and you're only making minimum wage and you are not eligible for food stamps or welfare because you make JUST over the line.

Then get back to us.

kitkat105 -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (7/1/2012 1:30:07 AM)

I also think its funny when people complain about others complaining. Hello free world! I will complain anything I like to because I can! Even better when I can justify it (ie. high gas prices, tax, increases in the prices of utlities, etc).

kalikshama, I love how my original post was about people who complain about things, and all you've done is post pictures of people holding signs, in which they are bitching.

I don't know you well enough to know if you know that I'm using the Tea Party to illustrate your "you."

When I personally point fingers, it's at capitalism run amuk, not government.

How does it feel to be 'insulted' by someone who cannot possibly know or understand your situation, yet has made criticisms based upon something they know nothing about?

here is the thing...

you are 22.... I would guess never majorly sick, or if you were, mommy and daddy paid for it.

Hiding your profile wont change your age... or your experience.

2008 you were 18... barely aware of the bubble that burst.. or the effects of that 'pop'. For you to come here to state you dont like people whining when you have no clue what they are complaining about (yes, dear, there is a difference), speaks to your maturity level.

When you make broad judgements, expect them in return.

Now, where do you pay only 250 a month for an apartment for 2 people? Maybe I need to move.

all of the above.

re: the bolded bit.

I am paying $500. p/mo, living alone. Granted, it's a single wide, older trailer in a park outside of the city that many folks would avoid due to the *ahem* "racial mix" (I am one of the few white folks around here).

Technically, this trailer has 2 bedrooms, but honestly? I would only use the second bedroom as a nursery, if I had kids. As it is, I use it for storage (and it STILL isn't big enough, dammit!).

IN theory, she COULD be paying 250. for rent. IF she is, then bless her heart for not having to deal with the catastrophes (major and minor) that can afflict folks (illnesses that require hospitalization, major automotive repairs, the breakdown of a personally owned item - such as a computer - that isn't covered under a lease agreement, etc)

tazzygirl -> RE: It's not THEIR job. It's yours. (7/1/2012 8:18:31 AM)

She claimed the total rent was 250.. and her part was 125.
