I was actually kind of interested because I wasn´t aware that there was such a scene around leather, and I´m always curious to learn about something new even if it´s not for me. But your reaction to FF seemed rather excessive. I ask this in all seriousness, LP, are you well? Because I remember before that you rety´re ok.
Thank you, Kitty. (May I call you Kitty?)

Yes, there is a scene in regards to leather. These days, it is very easy to find it.

I admit, FF and I have a personality clash. It is not something you should trouble yourself over. I promise that we have discussed it on the other side.

Yes, I am most certainly well. I promise you.

Okay this thread is interesting, and I will warn you that I have NO IDEA about leather and such so My question will probably sound like a child asking stupid questions. On one post someone mentioned hierarchy protocol, I think...explain that to me. I have an idea but I want to know if I am anywhere in the ballpark of what that might be.

Also, GT, what the hell is a bint?
I have got to get abreast of these abbv. that are used. lol

You´re welcome to call me Kitty :) Glad to hear you´re ok. What I found interesting is that although obviously I´m aware that many people have a fondness for leather, I didn´t know that it had such an identity as a scene on its own. Because I´m quite a literal person, this has made me wonder: does it involve solely genuine leather, or does it also include leather imitations?

I find it interesting that the leather culture had its roots in the early motorcycle clubs, right after WWII. (Please correct me if I'm wrong here) Anyone know of any reading on the subject? Specifically on the divergence of the gay/sexual scene from the early club scene?
I bought my first motorcycle in 1973 and have been riding ever since. I have never belonged to a club, or a gang. I'm pretty anti-social, and usually don't care for groups of people larger than 4. I was approached many years ago by a club, one of the prerequisites was signing the title of your bike away. I could never allow that level of blind loyalty,to any organization.
I will say that the conversations about what makes a real biker are as amusing, and pointless, as the "what is weal and twue" dom/sub/master/slave discussions.

Oooh, also, another question..does Leather (or people of Leather) agree with the way BDSM is practiced today? If no, what are some of the things they do not?

No one discussed what made a "real biker" we discussed the difference between a "motorcycle gang" (which refers to 1%-ers), an MC and an RC. We discussed 3 patch, 2 patch and 1 patch MCs/RCs. We also discussed how 1% MCs view women. Then questioned the improbable claims coming from someone that is known to lie.

And for the record.....being a passenger on bike pretty much precludes you from being a "real biker". That's like claiming you're driving the car when all you're doing is sitting in the passenger seat.

Interesting topic. I had no idea there was a leather scene. I have a couple jackets I like, and I have friends who ride motorcycles and they wear a lot of leather, but I think it is more for safety. Although one friend says in the summer especially with these heat waves it is just too hot, so she wears thick jeans without the leather covering them like she does in the winter.

A person who lies??? WTF.
If you look at my question to ladypact, it was a valid question about leather, not even bikers. I RODE with bikers as a passenger, never made a claim to be a REAL BIKER. I talked about how fun it was, and the freedom of it. How in the hell did this get turned around to all this BS?

Second question to LADYPACT, if she would be so kind to answer it.

Does being a biker and leather even have to have a relation?

You make a good point about the D in Discipline. That is one of the distinctions that brings leather folk into the BDSM realm. It isn't necessarily the sadism or masochism, as a number of leather people are not. Yes, the stereotype says otherwise, but that is not where people should base their knowledge.

Would you talk about the Discipline in leather?  Is it like the military discipline or more of a punishment dynamic?
I am loving this thread, I have learned a few things that aren't part of leather as well!  (thanks, GreedyTop, I love learning new words!)

I am not Ladypact obviously but I will take a guess and say no. I have quiet a few friends that are avid motorcycle riders and they wear leather mostly for safety. When some friends of ours was down by branson they hit a deer on the motorcycle. She was thrown quiet a long distance. They were thankful it was chilly so she was wearing full leathers. She did not have terrible road rash on top of her broken bones.

Osidegirl, I just saw the conversation heading that way, and commented on it. I am neither attacking nor defending. People are free to call themselves whatever they please, how I perceive them is another matter all together.

As I understand Leather, it evolved from the original motorcycle clubs, who were founded by young men, home from the war, looking for excitement, who had been exposed to motorcycles in the service. Leather has been the garment of choice among motorcyclists forever, because it works really well for warmth, comfort, and safety. The first Leatherman were homosexual males, and evolved from these early clubs.
Somewhere in the murky depths of my mind is a fantastic photography book about the early Chicago Outlaws by a guy named Danny Lyons, who was a young Jewish kid from NYC, who was bitten by the motorcycle bug, and rode with them.

I don't know about whether leather originated there. I do know from my POBOB fling that they were one of the first clubs and were originally a hot rod and motorcycle club. Some disgruntled members left and formed the Hell's Angels.

If leather did originate out of the motorcycle clubs of the 40's that certainly would explain the "Gay leather boy" look. Compare Rob Halford with the look sported by Marlon Brando in The Wild One.

Hello, K. I'm glad you are enjoying the thread.

Yes, you are right. Leather protocol is very much about hierarchy and that is based entirely on time in the lifestyle. For example (since they happen to be on this thread) both Resident Sadist and Lady H are both senior to Me in leather. That doesn't mean they are older. It means they have been doing WIITWD (what it is that we do) longer than I have. That makes Me their junior should we happen to meet at a formal or high protocol event.

Does that answer you properly? If not, please clarify.

This was my understanding as well. In the beginning, there were motorcycle clubs. The outlaws/1%ers and the leather community grew out of those into distinct groups, so that talking about MCs in general or outlaws in particular isn't really the same conversation as talking about the leather community. Is this basically correct?

LadyPact, I'm curious how you first became involved with leather. Was it a social/bdsm oriented group or was it more of motorcycle type thing? (Disclosure: I was a social member of an MC that was full of mostly lower-middle class, presumably vanilla, people interested in riding and boozing, protocol was of some importance but I rather assume that the group I was involved with had little resemblance to the sort of thing that would appeal to you in any deep way.)

OK. I know I'm going to get nailed for this. I don't have a question and this might not even be a discussion.

I am opening this subject about the difference between BDSM and leather. What is the difference, you might ask. Well, here is the place to bring your questions. I will answer them to the best of My ability. I'm not the end all, be all on this subject, but I will do My best.

What do you want to know about the difference between leather and BDSM?

Leather is a derivative of cows....BDSM is fun.

This question reminds Me of a line from the movie "My Cousin Vinny." It goes something like, "No self respecting Southern uses instant grits." Most people who consider themselves leather are the same way about leather imitations.

That doesn't mean that I don't own any. It just means that I don't actually wear them to anything that is a leather event.
