http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/20/us/colorado-theater-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

The article says 14 are dead, but the latest news I've watched on t.v.indicates the number dead at 12.

What will it be this time I wonder? What reason? I can't begin to verbalize how much sorrow I feel for those who lost loved ones or were injured.

quote:

(CNN) -- A heavily armed gunman killed at least 14 people and wounded 50 more during an early Friday morning screening of the new Batman movie at an Aurora, Colorado, theater, police Chief Dan Oates told reporters.

Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s.

"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Oates said there was no evidence of a second gunman, and FBI spokesman Jason Pack said it did not appear the incident was related to terrorism.

President Barack Obama issued a statement saying he and first lady Michelle Obama were "shocked and saddened" by the shooting and pledged the administration's support for victims of the shooting.

"As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family," it said.

Chaos broke out during the showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Century Aurora 16 theater when the shooting began, police and witnesses said.

Witnesses told KUSA that the gunman kicked in an emergency exit door and threw a smoke bomb into the darkened theater before opening fire.

One movie-goer, who was not identified, told KUSA the gunman was wearing a gas mask.

Some people in the audience thought the thick smoke and gunfire was a special effect accompanying the movie, police and witnesses said.

"We just heard a pop, pop, pop, pop," said Quentin Caldwell, who was attending the Batman showing in an adjacent theater.

Cell phone video taken by someone at the theater showed scores of people screaming and fleeing the building. Some had blood on their clothes.

One police officer carried a girl believed to be about 9 with gunshot wounds to her back out of the theater, a witness said. "She wasn't moving."

Authorities also have evacuated the suspect's Aurora apartment building after "he made a statement about explosives" in his unit, Oates said.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents have searched the suspect's car and went to his home to search for explosives, agency spokesman Tom Mangan said. They also are conducting emergency traces on the weapons used to see how they were obtained, he said.

Of the wounded, at least 20 were being treated at the University of Colorado Hospital, said spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery. All of the wounded suffered from gunshot wounds, which ranged from minor to critical, she said.

"They're arriving by police, by ambulance. Some are walking in," she said.

Ten people were killed in the theater and another four died at area hospitals, Oates said.

Hundreds of police officers descended on the theater, and the FBI has joined the investigation.

"We were calling for help from every police and fire agency," Fania said.

Aurora, a Denver suburb, is about 13 miles from Littleton, Colorado -- site of the April 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

In that incident, two teenage students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, armed themselves with guns and bombs and opened fire inside the high school. They killed 13 people and wounding 23 others before killing themselves.

Aurora is ten to fifteen miles from where I live. The names of the killed/wounded have not yet been released, but I doubt I know any of them.

We don't need terrorists, we'll just kill ourselves without their help. :(

I have a feeling it's gonna be a lover's dispute. Seems to be a lot of that lately in such shootings lately.

And of course, I'm going to be going to see this tomorrow night with some girls. I'm gonna be thinking, ok, who's gonna be the copycat?

I might be a bitch, because hearing these folks cheer, while the president speaks about the shootings, is pissing me off big time.

I just read the baltimore news. The city police are beefing up security tonight for the batman movies at all the theatres. I guess I won't have to look over my shoulder then tonight.

Seems this guy had his apartment booby trapped, but he did tell cops that before they went there. He is from San Diego, and was working on a ph.d of some sort.

They were saying that he was dressed in black and possibly body armor, like he thought he was a dark knight of some sort. I know it will be a while before we know whatever facts there are to know, but, I think, he is fucking crazy, is the only fact that matters.

I seriously do not understand the world we live in today.

I'm about to ask a really stupid question, especially in light of high school shootings in our recent history, but just how does an individual get this screwed up in 24 short years ?
Booby trapped apartment, bullet proof vest ,tear gas mask, pails of ammunition, multiple firearms......this wasn't a spontaneous act, this appears to be a considered planned action to murder as many innocents as possible
So I repeat my question....just how does a person get this fucked up?
And how does it go unnoticed by anyone else?
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.....my concerns are for all of us,we seem to inhabit an increasingly violent society and seem to lack the political will to do anything at all the inhibit the access to the instruments of violence.

I read he dropped out of the university a few months ago where he was going for the phd.
I'm wondering if he worked at the theatre and was fired or applied there and was turned down.
I mean he had an apartment so he had to be paying rent somehow.

And it's easy to get messed up at 24 if you already have some kind of mental illness and he lost it, went off meds, was never on meds, never got the help he should have been receiving.

Then you add if you are a loner and/or outcast, peers tease you, you can't get a date to save your life or a job for that matter. You start becoming a recluse and the next thing you know you're wearing a tinfoil hat, hear voices in the walls talking about aliens and you start building bombs for the coming war headed this way.

Indeed.

The news has hit the UK, of course. The sub-heading is always something like the question, 'Was it a terrorist attack?' That always makes me think, 'Why ask? Would the dead be somehow extra-dead if they'd been killed by a terrorist?'

I have to say that I can't agree, Greedy. As far as I can see, until this sort of atrocity *does* become firmly a matter of politics, all we can ever do is wring our hands every time some mass murder like this occurs. It'd be widely accepted as a political matter if the murderer had been a terrorist. By why should non-terrorist slaughters automatically be considered to be outside the province of politics?

Obama had some very nice words to say about this tragedy and was visably upset with some in that crowd. I couldn't make out what the morons were yelling. Sounded like four more years.

Rejection letters from DC comics?
A local screening is going to be a lot easier to make an attention seeking twat of yourself at than the offices they have on Broadway, sadly.

Because the end result of taking that approach is going to Stephen King getting a lethal injection while some twat who insists that he's a serial killer because he read The Dead Zone at an impressionable age blubs his heart out at Oprah and probably gets a fucking book deal of his own.

Screw that. If people can't be expected to take personal responsibility for spree killings, then they shouldn't be expected to accept it for anything else at all.

I will have to ponder this.

my knee jerk reaction is that how can politics play into someone who HAS gone off their meds, or has been previously undiagnosed (late onset stuff), or someone has a psychotic break due to some kind of trauma?or or or...

and I am NOT sure I am stating what I mean, precisely ( or as close as I ever get)... but I should be sleeping and am about to go do that (precisely LOL...please God, and damn the cats - don't tell them I said that)
