I thought edge play was when you get someone near orgasm and make them stop just before. I learned something new. :D

That's called edging. I supposed you *could* call it edge play, but now we'd have three different definitions.

Why does BDSM related stuff have to be so difficult to define or label ?/ <big sigh>

It only becomes difficult when you try and force EVERYONE to conform to one ideal. [8D]

Let me ask you then, how has your edge shifted over time, are there things that you used to consider with trepidation, that are now standard in your play?

How essential for you is pushing boundaries in play? Do you consider it a need?

I'm sorry if I missed it and this was directed at Me. (I don't pay much attention to the in reply to feature.)

Yes, dang near all of them. I'm a later in life sadist. It wasn't that I didn't have exposure. I just didn't want to engage in it.

As for pushing boundaries, no it isn't a need. Do I do it sometimes, yes. Then again, a lot of that can mean pushing the bottom, but not Myself. For example, a lot of people would say a certain number of needles or a particular gauge is a boundary because they've never done twenty (amount) instead of sixteen or go to sixteen (size) instead of the smaller ones they are used to.

I've gotten less edgy over time.

Without getting into details, the last edgy thing I did nearly made my mind crack. At least that's how it felt. It would take me a very long time to process it, and it took me years to heal from, after the relationship ended.

It was not life-threatening. Edgy does not have to mean painful or life-risking.

Yeah, edgeplay for me has nothing to do with blades or cliffs - I'm definitely fascinated by psychological edges, and he dangers are, if anything, simultaneously, more real, cutting to the very core of the self, and harder to define, the edge being different for everyone.

I don't use the term "edge play" at all because I don't find it has any useful definitions. If I want to describe an activity that some people might label "edge play" I simply describe it.

Well I'll tell you, part of what attracted me to BDSM as opposed to winging it, if you know what I mean, is that everyone agrees that there are definitions, even if nobody agrees on what they are - it forces you to find ways to communicate that are otherwise left to social convention, which is often arbitrary.

i.e., there is no "normal" way for humans to interact sexually, the prevailing "normative" can vary widely from place to place and time to time, person to person - the one thing we do that no other animal does, is communicate with each about it in higher abstractions in ways that transcend basic electro-chemical endocrine responses.

'I don't use the term "edge play" at all because I don't find it has any useful definitions. If I want to describe an activity that some people might label "edge play" I simply describe it '

^---- This, pretty much.

In my experience, people often use it to describe play outside their own boundaries, or things they do that they consider to be hardcore because other folk think those things are intense.

I've seen 2 folks that consider eachother to be edge players but not themselves, which was funny to me. Also seen the inverse, where folks consider themselves to be edgy but not others... it seemed to be a pissing contest of stupidity.

fast reply:

The only edge play I ever do is breath play.

It is stupid and dangerous and I don't recommend it to anyone. I started doing that with subs before any of us learned how stupid and dangerous it is.

It became a fetish and I have learned to be very careful. Mostly I will just put a rope around her neck and not actually tighten it.

Other than that one thing I stay away from actual dangerous practices. I am not trying to brag, merely explain: I have a large member, it requires a lot of blood to remain tumescent. The most important sex organ you have is your brain. I have an extremely active brain. If the wrong thing creeps in (like say the cops showing up) it puts the blood into other organs than the one I am exercising. So in the end I can't participate in edgeplay because my own body plays the traitor on me.

I can play at a sub's edges, but I can't play at my own. If I don't know she'll be safe I can't do it. Figuratively and literally. Except for the breathplay.

Did I mention that breathplay is stupid and dangerous? Well, it is. Both. Stupid and dangerous. Don't do it.
