We keep reading stories in major newspapers how gangs in the bigger cities have weapons that outgun the local police. How long will it be until our inner cities become like the streets in Mexico where criminals with automatic weapons rule? Oh, thats right, murders will be afraid of breaking new gun laws and will destroy their guns! According to news stories, residents have complained, police don't respond after dark. How many news programs say in some areas, if you give information about a crime, you get executed. And then they ask a law abiding citizen a dumb question like, "why do you need an assult rifle?" Probably to have a small fighting chance!

Which '...major newspapers...' do you read? Since I read a few different publications each day, and rarily if ever see or hear of '...gangs in bigger cities have weapons that outgun the local police'. Since New York City is close by, I really dont hear much about that sort of violence. Could you tell me which city in the country is.....bigger....than New York City?

All your spewing out is NRA/GOP/TP fear politics. They know folks like you will....never....check the B.S. they spew on a daily basis. Your not intelligent, educated, nor wise enough to do that. If you were, I highly doubt you would make sure a statement as you have.

You want to protect your home? Consider ways to make your area less attractive to the criminal element. Having a pile of guns will do nothing to help your situation. It will instead give you a false sense of security while the problem grows bigger. You could install IR cameras and listening devices while giving the police valuable intel on criminal activities. If the police are smart (and they do tend to be in most places), they'll know where to park their police cars when getting free and useful information. You could even help organized a local watch group with the police. Help light up dark locations.

But do yourself and every else a favor, and stop listening to the NRA/GOP/TP material.

I would like to see some validation for this moronic tripe.
Cops have apc's ffs.

Meh, the AK is just a basic .30 caliber bullet.

That would be the AK-74. 7.62X39. Similar to the AR/10, both being within the 30 cal class. The AK-47 uses the 5.45X39. More akin to a AR/15 or M16 if you prefer; slightly enlarged Dia. and highly souped up .22.

You have the 47 and the 74 reversed.
For a real highly souped up .22 check out the balistics on a .220 swift.

I have never heard that the gangs are running any American city. Gangs pretty much keep to themselves, actually, it's almost part of the definition. Even when Detroit was the murder capital back in the days of the drug wars, it was drug dealers killing each other.

Now the Detroit cops that we know assure us that the streets are pretty mean, but they don't drive armored vehicles, either.

Reality check? Not around here.

Thompson, you'd really go after a whitetail with an AK-47? Interesting.

Why would someone not hunt with an AK?
It's an incredibly reliable rifle with good accuracy and stopping power.
Just because you can use it as a semiauto doesn't mean you have to.

It just seems like overkill, I would see it for something elk sized and up, not for a smaller target.

Once you get over 400 lbs. I believe you need a little more omph to make a clean kill. If we then begin to speak of dangerous game all the more reason for extra omph...I am old and I do not run nor climb as fast as I once did.

I agree that criminals have no desire to involve non combatants.
Lapd had 6 apc's that I have seen at different open houses.

I wonder what it says about american priorities when gun ownership is a right and healthcare isn't. DUH!

I can quote the second amendment gauanteeing the right to own a gun. Can you quote the amendment gauranteeing health care? The founding fathers were wise men who lived in the real world and not Liberals who only have a 10 year old's perception of a Disney World like United States.

You will find it in the peamble to the di. It was one of the reasons the founders gave for committing treason.

Perhaps if you were to avail yourself of google you might disabuse yourself of your mind numbing ignorance and find out who the "shit stirers" of history are.

What is truly "mind numbing" is your inability to come up with some fresh wording for your needlessly insulting posts. Repeat, repeat repeat ad nausaum "disabuse yourself of your ignorance/stupidity..." etc. Did you recently find the word "disabuse" when flicking though a dictionary? [:D]

DaddySatyr -> RE: 2nd amendment (7/25/2012 2:44:26 PM)

I've always preferred "disavow" as opposed to "disabuse" but I don't like the word "abuse", anyway so, there ya have it.

Maybe our old unreconstructed Stalinist can improve his vocabulary by trying out a few alternative words http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/disabuse [:)]

Wouldn't Jack the Ripper be ahead of the Krays?

There aren't any British serial killers who didn't rack up a bigger body count than the Krays. That's sort of peon's point. I can't really see what they have to do with this conversation as they were professional criminals who were more interested in activities that made money than random murders.

(I think Mary Ann Cotton holds the UK record, having poisoned twenty odd victims. She kept things low key, though, and so attracts less attention than more showy peers like John George Haigh or Peter Sutcliffe.)

I sit corrected.

People are rushing to buy guns in Colorado now, and it's nothing but a security blanket. Crazy shit. I really can't imagine seeing a gun as a security blanket in that way. And I am positive it is a very bad sign that it is occuring. Especially since Aurora was one of those cases where guns could only worsen the outcome. Talk about ineffective measures. If I were a gun merchant, I would blacklist any customer that wanted to buy a gun as a security blanket without a conversation and a known good course, and anyone- period- that wanted to buy one "in case" of another Aurora. I don't need that blood on my hands.

I'm not sure what you mean by security blanket. If it means people running out buying guns because they feel threatened by some possible violent act, paranoia because of the recent tragedy then I would have to disagree. The reason they're out buying guns is because they're afraid of a new influx of gun control laws, state and federal, and they want to snap up on whatever they think may be unavailable in the future. Unless of course that's what you meant by security blanket, then I won't disagree. The spike in gun sales I'm sure is going on everywhere outside of Colorado too.

I got caught up in the same type of mess in 1989 when some idiot shot up a school yard in California with an AK type rifle converted to full auto. The gun banners started concentrating their efforts on these so called 'assault weapons" instead of the handguns they had been focusing their efforts on at the time. There were so many politicians calling for bans on semi-automatics the gun market went crazy. The sales of military style semi-autos went through the roof including high capacity magazines, ammunition, accessories and all the rest of it. The same thing happened before and after the "Clinton Assault Weapon Ban". Then after Obama won the presidency a most unusual thing happened. The sale of ammunition spiked. For almost 2 years it went off the shelf as fast as it came in. Many types of ammo were difficult to get. People would wait at the store for the trucks to come and Wal Mart even put a two box limit on ammo sales. I sold some extra .380 ammo I had at 3 times the price of what it would normally be worth. Even back when we had the first spike in gun sales, ammo was plentiful.

I would have to say at this point gun owners are firmly entrenched. Any future gun ban laws will have to grandfather what's already out there assuming they would even pass. I doubt too many will turn in their weapons or register them. I couldn't begin to estimate how much modern military type hardware there is out there in the possession of private citizens but I'm sure it's enough to keep the market going for quite some time.

Someone who puts a gun in their avatar, or makes their avatar solely out of a picture of a gun, does so because they think, probably correctly (regarding the most gormless of this site's readership), that it makes them look impressive in some way. .....................................................

........................That's wrong. If it wasn't a symbol of mass murder in the past, it's well on the way to becoming one now. What would you think if someone on this forum - say, that person who currently uses some automatic pistol as his avatar - started using Breivik's weapon as his avatar?

Nice little surreptitious insult there. What makes you think you're so much smarter than me or anyone else for that matter ? Someone who puts hunky little abbs in their avatar, or makes their avatar solely out of a picture of their hunky little abbs, does so because they think, probably correctly (I'll leave out the stupid insult), that it makes them look impressive in some way.

There are all kinds of avatars on here that you could use that sentence with. We have moose, and roosters, and Jack Daniels, the grim reaper, some nice female asses (definitely impressive), we even had a cat with lipstick or what ever that was, and many more. I'm sure we all have our reasons for using the avatars that we do. Some even use their own picture with full face, I think I respect those the most. I wouldn't read anything particular into mine and it certainly doesn't make me stupid. It's no secret I like guns. In light of the recent tragedy it's a good thing I've had it for awhile as I sure wouldn't go putting one like that up now after what happened. But take a good look at it. It's a custom 1911A1 45 caliber semi-automatic pistol with my screen name lovmuffin. Don't ya just feel the love ?

I don't know what he's reading either but it's not the NRA or the GOP spewing crap like criminals out gunning the police. And you're right it is crap but the only place I've ever heard that line is from politicians calling for gun bans. The material comes mostly from democrats and liberals.

All those things you suggested to protect your home are fine and dandy but a pile of guns, or at least one may not only come in handy but it could be the ultimate safe guard if everything else fails. IR cameras and listening devices may not even be in your budget. Ill give you some genuine NRA material though, "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away".
