Status: offline 		As far as I know, it means "NOT kinky." That's how I use it anyway & how I've heard others use it....to differentiate between kinky and non-kinky people.

Status: offline 		Vanilla, a rare and expensive spice made from the seed pod of the vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifola). It is very difficult to cultivate on a commercial basis, and it's cultivation and preparation is labor intensive, making it the second most expensive spice in the world, after saffron.

For some strange reason this expensive and sought after spice has become used as a term for "plain."

Status: offline 		There's vanilla from Wall-mart and there's deluxe, from the pod fresh made by hand vanilla. It doesnt have to be boring. But it ISNT chocolate/chilli/cherry with vodka.

I like to think it means people who do not identify as being part of BDSM as there are plenty of folks out there doing what we do without naming it like we do. The problem is sometimes people use it in a more derogatory way as though it is the unenlightened and slightly dull.

I believe it's an old gay term for "straights" or heteros....

Anyway, it basically refers to the greater majority - the mundane or everyday; what "everyone" does etc. So it's a borrowed term that works for we BDSMers, too, to differentiate in the same way.

After seeing your journal on your profile I think you are asking about the term vanilla as it pertains to the designation under your avatar here on the boards. You seemed to think you were labeled as vanilla on your profile, you aren't, it's just a silly thing on the boards to show how many posts you've made. As you make more posts the icon picture and word changes. So after 25 posts I think you'll move up from the vanilla cone to the next level and I can't remember what that one is, but hey, it just changes the higher you go. People who go to your profile don't see the icons on here, they just show up here when you post on threads.

It was one of the first flavors synthesized in a lab. Vanilla was (and still is) an extremely expensive spice. The faux-vanilla was cheap to produce and rapidly became the norm for ice cream. Because of it's ubiquity it became the term used for 'standard' sex.

Another way to define it: sex without rope-burns, chocolate and ghost peppers. Oh, great, I just turned myself on. Any of you women interested in rope-burns and chocolate?
