is when I tied up alot of my time and beat a canvas with a paintbrush and some acrylics...Id like to get some feedback since the art threads are into sensory deprivation and not prone to give me the feedback Im looking for..

he posted some tumblr links to artwork I presume is his own down in the creative works (whatever it's called) forum. the work was not my thing, so I didn't comment.

Okay, I went and checked out the first link. I liked the Miles Davis poster in the background. (My absolutely FAVORITE artist to scene to when I'm in 'that' mood.) Art is so subjective and if it doesn't speak to me, I may still appreciate the effort and even the talent, so please remember that you asked for this feedback and I'm giving you my honest impression. Maybe it doesn't come across on camera as well as it does it person?? I have viewed the image of the Mona Lisa dozens of times in books, on television etc., over the course of my life. I was never moved by it and didn't get why it was so famous. Then, I went to Paris and after finally making my way up to the front to view her.. I was stunned. I stood there drinking her in for 45 solid minutes with tears streaming down my face and a heart that was full of emotion. There were 200 people around me and it dawned on me as I just stood there that they were coming up to the ballistrude, snapping a photo (been there, done that sort of thing.. you know what I mean?) then turning and walking away, seeing her only through the lens and not through the heart. As I sit here and write to you about that awesome experience, I have tears again just with it's memory. So, that said.. here I go. I viewed the first link you provided.. this is what I saw and felt: I saw Lego man.. dressed in blue on a galloping horse surrounded by blood but there was no nobility to the Lego warrior, no passion, no depth or substance .. the horse was better.. I saw the wild, almost untamed, the resentment of having a rider (probably because the rider was unworthy) I saw some effort there and an inkling of talent but the presentation as a whole lacked maturity with just a bita depth coming through from the bridled submission of the beast. Overall, it's rather sad but common. Had the horse a different rider, it could have been a thing of beauty. Is that the sort of feedback you were looking for OKA? edited: what's the name of your piece, OKA?

Then I looked again through my heart and saw submission being controlled by .. empty with the beast fighting against the reins and the rider without emotion. I imagine the artist is submissive and seeking love but fighting against being trapped by the aspect of self they can't or won't or don't know how control. The horse was not able to throw this rider even knowing it was just not enough. For another horse, such domination would have been enough and they would have found their freedom in that place ... but not the horse in the painting. That horse needs more than what it has.. it needs the soul provided by the only thing which can feed it. It reminded me of my beginning, I suppose. Had the wrong rider there for sure.. maybe that's why I see a lack of maturity.. because it's something I can relate to from back then, so it spoke to me more about the first steps rather than later steps. That's why I found it sad. Domination didn't allow that horse to find its freedom. It needs something different and to my mind, that means a different rider. That's also why I found it common. The lack of compatibility between horse and rider brought the image down for me. Art without hope doesn't float my boat these days. I'm much too optimistic. As a piece to view, I would have to take it in small doses. I wouldn't hang it in my house from what I gather of it over the net.. but, who knows. Mona captured me for sure in person.. his piece might, too.

Celeste, my initial (and second and third) reaction was along the lines of "I've seen better by kindergartners doing fingerpainting". Granted, my preference is for Rembrandt, et al. I still don't get why PIcasso is such a big deal. TO many, that makes me a philistine... oh well. I like my art to actually LOOK like something recognizable, and allow me to interpret the scene on my own. JMHO.

I've seen plenty of his work in person and it just leaves me flat. I'm not really a fan of any of the Cubists (sp?).

I visited a friend in NY a few years back and we went to the big ass museum with all the Egyption stuff (I cannot remember what it's called.. I know MOMA isn't right...). They had a huge display of Picasso, and almsot all of it left me like this: "head tilt, like a puppy. Head tilt the other side, like a puppy. WTF???" SOme of his earliest work was ok, but nothing that made me excited. Love the Dutch masters, though. Vermeer is another of my favorites (and lemme tell you, when I was in the Netherlands....drrrroooooooooollll puddddddle. Fuck the 'coffee houses', gimme the art museums....)

Okay, here is my truth. Non snark. Honest truth. First of all, being of an artistic bent myself, I am not going to ever EVER tell another artist that their stuff is shit, or that they are not an artist. It is what it is to them, regardless of whether or not anyone else likes it. Your stuff, I don't like. Now, before you get your boxers bunched, here's the dealio. Granted, I am not an abstract art fan. Granted, we are seeing your stuff via some rather shitty quality photos. One of these years, probably when I am old(er) and gray, my dream is to own a small, selling, gallery. The only criteria is I have to find something about it to like, a certain quality. It doesn't have to be something I would hang in my house, but it has to have what I call in my head 'good art charisma'. Your stuff isn't there......from what I see. But, neither is my own. Other people like my shit, but it's not something I would hang up for sale........or brag about. Perhaps you do have potential as you've been told. Time will tell. What I see right now is someone struggling to be whatever it is he wants to be. But if I had to guess there are one or both of two things happening. Either you've not been formally trained and need some classes to teach you how to get what you want out there, and/or, you are getting in your own way. Painting something you've seen that spoke to you, mimicking it, but not painting from your own core/soul/whatever the fuck you wanna call it. Don't take anything I've written as a nastigram or negative. It is not my intent. You asked, I've been honest. That's all.

Michael and I have worn out more than a few pairs of shoes walking around museums of every sort and two visits to the Louvre is not enough to even touch the place much less all the other places out there! There is just never enough time to do everything you want. Stupid work.

Rembrandt... drool puddle indeed. Favourite artist of all time though has to be Edvard Munch, "The Vampire" has me stopping and staring every time.

Made me look. And, it was okay. I liked the red piece best, very dynamic. I dont try to find shapes in abstract pieces, so I tried to ignore what Celeste said about horses... If I was curating a show, I don't know that I'd hang any of them, they just don't feel original enough. I get the sense that they are technique studies more than anything.

I clicked on the "more paintings" thread you had, just the first link, and IMMEDIATELY, I saw Pollock. When you mentioned you were a fan, it just solidified it. Like, LaTigresse- i am also an artist. So like her, I won't say your stuff is shit. Which its not. However, it struck me as a tribute to Pollock. The color scheme, the technique, and the use of a pallet knife in white. I won't say you bit his style, but it definitely didn't feel original. Presumably, you have your own voice...where is it?
