This is what happens when grubby individuals like Rupert Murdoch control the media. It starts inventing 'truths' that suit the owner's interests.

Okay, I'll talk about revisionism:
When did Ronnie Reagan become the man who saved your country from the USSR singlehanded, rather than the idiot who increased spending hugely while cutting tax revenues?

Probably through the following 20 years where a presidential candidate could say "It's the economy, stupid." without cutting his own throat. I don't see Mr. Obama using that tactic.

I swear Al Gore did invent the internet, and it wasn't Dan Aykroyd, or was this a knock off somewhere? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnFJ8cHAlco

And what he said is true. He was behind legislation that allowed the Internet to move from a closed military/research university system to something available to the public.

But back on topic how do feel that a publication like the WSJ published a piece of what can only be called fiction and tried to pass it off as fact?

What he said was "he took the initiative in creating the internet".

Yeah, and thats just fundamentally a FLAT out lie.
I was on the internet when it was Arpanet, and before that, when it was Darpanet.

I was there when Metcalf invented ethernet, and Cerf TCP/ip, and when Cern promulgated graphics based web browsers.

I was there when Yahoo was a user edited directory.

I recall Postel setting up IANA. I remember Microsoft adopting a pegasus winsock simply because it wasn't IPX - and hence accidentally spawning early growth.

Now, there is no question that Gore was a technology wonk. And even that he contributed in a meaningful way. But most of the events that lead to the development of the internet - had nothing to do wit Gore. Nor did Archie, Mosaic or any of the original browsers.

I remember Chambers and cisco - I remember Comdex. I remember 56K backbones and acoustic couplers. I actually gave speeches to AT&T executives telling them to include free communications which each of their PC's - because it would set up this huge web of information exchange - and allow them to leverage their communications edge to promote their pcs.

Gore had nothing to do with any of that. And the government didn't *invent* the internet - it funded some research - but Xerox, 3com, Jon Postel, AT&T funded more.

Gore was important as a politician - but even without Gore the internet would have come into being, and looked almost identical as it does now.

DomKen -> RE: Right wing revisionism reaches new low (7/27/2012 2:54:43 AM)

Sure

Postel started IANA in 1969. Ethernet was created in the 1970's. TCP/IP was 1980.

Guys who were around for all that are all retired in their 70's.

And yes, the government created the Internet. That is where the research money and the direction for that research came from. DARPAnet's backbone hardware belonged to the feds, actually the top level name servers belonged to the US government well after the Internet became public (1998). Further the federal government still manages the authoratative root zone file (the file that contains the data for what are the domain and national name servers).

Well, we know this only because it was and has been the repubs that have and always have said so...Gore never said it.

And Sarah Palin never said she could see Russia from her back porch either, but that didn't stop your side from running with that ball, did it?

Gore said that he voted for the legislation that helped create the internet. Palin said that there were parts of Alaska that one could see Russia from, on a clear day.

Both were true statements first changed, then blown way out of proportion for the hyperbole value.

Gore's statement was a statement of fact. He and many others voted for a bill that funded the govt.'s role in the real beginning of the Internet. Palin's statement was one of an almost childish attempt to suggest as a result she actually had foreign policy experience.

Otherwise, the fact that one could see parts of Russia from Alaska means absolutely nothing at all...nothing.

Maybe he's confusing "the internet" with "the world wide web"? That'd explain all of the blather about graphical browsers , after all.

I listened very carefully yet did not hear the word "invent."

But Gore isn't the exception here. ALL politicians want to take credit for everything they do.

However, Gore as suffered an undeserved avalanche of false ridicule (for about 20 years) only because he was VP running for POUS and based based on a republican lie.

I will rely upon my own sources and concurrent experiences to conclude that without DARPA the net takes a whole lot and I mean a whole lot longer to reach the breadth it enjoys today.

(Xerox ? Makes me laugh. [It] 'invented' and then gave away the mouse) Xerox is the incredible shrinking corporation.

I have one...Reagan invented big-govt., deficit spending (fiscal) conservatives [sic]...and on the cheap too, without DARPA.

So you were there. So was I. Doesn't mean you are correct or even on point. Suffice it to say, without DARPA and Arpnet and as a direct result of GOVERNMENT...it is very possible the Internet would be nothing like it is now...nothing at all.

Private business, the absolutely risk-averse capitalist practically had to be dragged kicking and screaming (bribed) to get involved... [they] being as visionary as a blind monk.

I never revered the WSJ. Hell, anything you read in it on investment opportunities...you are already too late.

The WSJ is now merely a rent-seeking, for-profit publication, full of useless information and capitalist propaganda... acquired and championed by Murdock specifically for that purpose.
