ORIGINAL: Phydeaux What he said was "he took the initiative in creating the internet". Yeah, and thats just fundamentally a FLAT out lie. I was on the internet when it was Arpanet, and before that, when it was Darpanet. I was there when Metcalf invented ethernet, and Cerf TCP/ip, and when Cern promulgated graphics based web browsers. I was there when Yahoo was a user edited directory. I recall Postel setting up IANA. I remember Microsoft adopting a pegasus winsock simply because it wasn't IPX - and hence accidentally spawning early growth. Now, there is no question that Gore was a technology wonk. And even that he contributed in a meaningful way. But most of the events that lead to the development of the internet - had nothing to do wit Gore. Nor did Archie, Mosaic or any of the original browsers. I remember Chambers and cisco - I remember Comdex. I remember 56K backbones and acoustic couplers. I actually gave speeches to AT&T executives telling them to include free communications which each of their PC's - because it would set up this huge web of information exchange - and allow them to leverage their communications edge to promote their pcs. Gore had nothing to do with any of that. And the government didn't *invent* the internet - it funded some research - but Xerox, 3com, Jon Postel, AT&T funded more. Gore was important as a politician - but even without Gore the internet would have come into being, and looked almost identical as it does now. But Gore isn't the exception here. ALL politicians want to take credit for everything they do. However, Gore as suffered an undeserved avalanche of false ridicule (for about 20 years) only because he was VP running for POUS and based based on a republican lie. I will rely upon my own sources and concurrent experiences to conclude that without DARPA the net takes a whole lot and I mean a whole lot longer to reach the breadth it enjoys today. (Xerox ? Makes me laugh. [It] 'invented' and then gave away the mouse) Xerox is the incredible shrinking corporation. I have one...Reagan invented big-govt., deficit spending (fiscal) conservatives [sic]...and on the cheap too, without DARPA. So you were there. So was I. Doesn't mean you are correct or even on point. Suffice it to say, without DARPA and Arpnet and as a direct result of GOVERNMENT...it is very possible the Internet would be nothing like it is now...nothing at all. Private business, the absolutely risk-averse capitalist practically had to be dragged kicking and screaming (bribed) to get involved... [they] being as visionary as a blind monk.
