"Arab Spring Could've Been Avoided By Bush's 'Freedom Agenda' "

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/27/mitt-romney-arab-spring_n_1710038.html

In an interview with the right-wing Israeli daily newspaper Israel Hayom, Mitt Romney said that the Arab Spring might never have happened had Bush's "freedom agenda" not been prematurely halted by President Barack Obama.

"President [George W.] Bush urged [deposed Egyptian President] Hosni Mubarak to move toward a more democratic posture, but President Obama abandoned the freedom agenda and we are seeing today a whirlwind of tumult in the Middle East in part because these nations did not embrace the reforms that could have changed the course of their history, in a more peaceful manner," Romney said.

Romney argued that with the rise of democratically elected Islamist governments in some of the countries undergoing revolutions -- Egypt and Tunisia in particular -- the Arab Spring has turned out to be less of a boon for Western interests than it initially appeared.

"Clearly we're disappointed in seeing Tunisia and Morocco elect Islamist governments. We're very concerned in seeing the new leader in Egypt as an Islamist leader. It is our hope to move these nations toward a more modern view of the world and to not present a threat to their neighbors and to the other nations of the world," he said.

So cons.....what exactly was bush`s "freedom agenda"?

Is this putz really going to bring up bush?

This is unbelievable. The Israelis are very politically aware. This is like trying to sell a MLM scheme to Warren Buffet, to try to spin reality that badly to the Israelis.

My guess is that the "freedom agenda" that Romney is referring to is Bush's wacky idea that he could score an easy victory in Iraq and strike such terror into the hearts of other Arab despots that they would be forced to democratize to prevent further incursion by the US.

As you said, for Romney to invoke Bush is pretty much folly. I think that he believes that the Israelis are so pissed off at Obama that anything he says against Obama will go over like gangbusters.

This idiot is provoking the new Arab governments while Clinton is trying to reach out to them.

Mubarak was in power IIRC over thirty years. To say that Bush and Obama were the only presidents whose policies matter, is ridiculous. Romney's about to get catcalls overseas again.

Edited to add: Owner, a correction to your post. This did NOT happen in Israel. Romney stated that he would not criticize Obama while overseas, and the interview was done by an Israeli paper that interviewed Romney in Nevada.

I have heard (check me on this) that Douche's Freedom Agenda was supposed to be a combination of diplomatic and economic pressure, and supporting democratic dissident groups seeking to remove their despotic regimes - peacefully if possible, but by any means necessary. The problem was that most of those regimes tolerated us as pragmatic politics, while the populist masses hate us. The intent, I understand, was that these new democratic regimes would of course elect leaders happy to kiss up to Haliburton...

There seems to be some truth in what the Mittster says http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_2-6-2005_pg7_42 although he may be spinning it a lot of course. Clinton is saying much the same thing to the old and new guard http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jul/15/us-role-post-mubarak-egypt-still-unclear/?page=all today.

Owner59 -> RE: Mitt`s Umpteenth Blunder.....This One In Israel. (7/28/2012 7:54:06 AM)

I`d like Mittens to explain what the "freedom agenda" is/was and how he`d make it work.......specifically.

Mitt is again showing his typical con-cluelessness by ignoring our Iraq tragedy and even threatening to impose another.

FYI to Mitt and our other reality-challenged cons....NOBODY thinks disaster Iraq was a good idea or honorable accept the lunatic fringe.

I'm sure Mitt gives a shit what you want Owner[8|]... From where I stand, he's pretty good at telling you progressives to fuck off.

He's also telling the independents and swing voters to fuck off, which isn't a good idea given that people who'll be impressed by him telling progressives to fuck off (like yourself) will vote for him regardless of what he does or says between now and November. He could admit to the murder of Madeline McCann, state that he put "the Joker" up to the Colarado shootings as a prank and suffer a crippling stroke that leaves him inbcapable of feeding himself and you'll still vote for him, after all.

Sure he is[8|] Sorry moon, but the only people who care about this stupid shit are people who take the HuffnPuff seriously... IOW progressives.

If he were pissing off the independents like you claim, why isn't Obama wiping the floor with Mitt in the polls? He's a fucking incumbent President, three months out from the election, and just spent 100 million dollars on attack ad's, and in every poll taken, he's either losing to Mitt, or winning by a statistical error.

Do explain where all these pissed off swing voters are, I'd love to see some proof.

Unless he thinks the progressives will vote for him and/or contribute campaign funds. When that happens, he flip flops and becomes one himself.

Yep, he's a flip flopping politician, just like every other politician... That doesn't change the fact that nobody but people like Owner give's a shit about Romney's "gaffes". The polls prove he's wrong, but he's just too stubborn to admit that Obama's campaign is in deep shit. He'd rather parrot HuffnPuff's attempt to rally the people to the Obama banner.

Sanity -> RE: Mitt`s Umpteenth Blunder.....This One In Israel. (7/28/2012 10:26:33 AM)

Sometimes they say what they really think, whether by mistake or because they drop their guard for a minute

And when Romney says what he thinks people dont cringe for the same reasons. The Brits turned into angry little dogs because they were asked matter of factly if they had ironed out some well-known security issues

Big whoopee, theyre Brits, who cares.

But when Obama dropped his guard and let his disdain for business owners be known that was actually something substantive, as he and many of his comrades on the far left have invested a great deal of time and effort trying to hide who this man really is, and what he truly believes

You really can not see that it might be relevant to the rest of the world just who is elected as President of the USA? That people outside of the US might have a vested interest in this, too? [8|]
