Status: offline 		employees' pay could soon hit the presidential campaign.

Mitt Romney's spending plan includes a pledge to "align federal employee compensation with the private sector," and it cites studies showing that "federal compensation exceeds private sector levels by as much as 30 to 40 percent when benefits are taken into account. This must be corrected."

As far as President Obama's campaign is concerned, that means Romney is talking about a federal pay cut of up to 40%.

"To pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, (Romney) drastically cuts pay for the men and women who secure our borders and skies, enforce our laws, inspect our food and search for better treatments and cures," said Obama spokesman Adam Fetcher.

Obama's debt reduction plan, he said, "requires federal workers to do their part through eliminating wasteful spending, streamlining government and freezing federal pay for the past two years."

Romney aides and supporters said they are not proposing a 30% to 40% pay cut, and federal compensation involved more than take-home pay, including such benefits as health coverage, retirement, paid leave and student loan repayments. According to the Romney plan, aligning federal compensation with the private sector will save $47 billion.

Really? Is this the route we want to go now? Is Romney and his precious buddies pockets more dear to them than the men and women fighting in the trenches?

I thought this thread was going to be about sequestration, Tazzy, but I'm sure we'll get to that topic soon enough.

Employee contributions to healthcare coverage isn't too much to ask.  Maybe scratch two holidays off the federal list, and give them back one floater.  I'd like to see much bigger changes, but that's a subject that's been done.

Why should Romney devulge his plan for funding the tax cuts et al? Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid refused to devulge what was in Obamacare before they passed it.

Ummm ....to the unconcerned and the un-informed.....the GOP has already publicly admitted that their plans are the same as bush`s were.

Mittens has a plan to create a tax cut costing trillions of dollars tax that only millionaires can receive......

Obama is Bush Lite. Same policies, without the cowboy mentality. I get once we're in this shit, we can't simply cut and book. Unfortunately. He's wrong about tax cuts--ALL the Bush cuts should expire, and the SS cut too. The Patriot Act should die.

Romney's positions aren't opposition rhetoric--they're his stated objectives. Expand the military (which he claims has been dangerously cut); even more tax cuts than Bush. No plans for funding either. Bush on Steroids. Get used to it--it's the bottom line truth.

That would do it for me right there. Add health care--let's finish the job, not revert back to the 1930s again. Then Supreme Court justices. Then the lock-step mentality of the Republican Party since 2000 that makes voting for any Republican a vote for the party machine.

The only resemblance to Carter is a nod toward green initiatives. Not great nods either.

Obama is *right* about exports, though his stated goals are unrealistic. Nonetheless, we've made progress here.

NO ONE is addressing anything realistic about the economy or jobs, so that's a wash.

There's nothing progressive about Obama except a healthy care plan at all, and even there, one borrowed from the Republicans when they were still semi-sane. Eventually, we'll have to move to single payer.

But Romney's positions are as they are. If you think they're nonsense, support someone else.

Actually, the Post's fact checker blog backed off calling anything about when Romney left Bain being a lie after the evidence became undeniable.

Oh. So all of those selfless Republican fillibusters were trying to block ACA sight unseen with no knowledge of what it contained, were they? I thought it was only the evil Liberals who did that sort of partisan stuff...

As for the economy: you don't think the fact that your party has spent the last three and a bit years screaming until they have faces bluer than a baboon's arse about teh Kenyan's failure to fix the deficit obliges Captain Magicpants to make a suggestion or two about how he'd balance the budget if he's basing his electioneering on what a brilliant businessman he is?

The best reason for the incontinent Mormon to divulge his plan for funding the tax cuts is to demonstrate that he actually has such a plan, unlike the last three Republican Presidents, who all seemed to think that they could run your country's economy on credit.

Status: offline 		Except we both know perfectly well, Muse, that campaign pledges aren't worth the air they take to utter.  Remember Gitmo?  Romney is a smart businessman, and even if he's a little bit creepy, I believe him to be a man of good character.  If elected, he's going to get the "oh shit," briefings where they sit him down and show him the numbers that don't get released to the public.  He'll go from there.

When Mitt Romney has taken on a job, he's been good at it.  What do you find Bush-like in that?

Status: offline 		Wonder what's he's going to use as comparison to the private sector? As a whole, the fed employees are higher educated, and another reason fed pay looks better nowadays is that that the private sector's been slammed so hard in the last 20 years or so.

Oh yeah, before folks jump in about civil service pensions, that went out in 1987.

Personally I think a lot of the animosity against gov't employees is that everyone remembers their teeth-gritting experiences with the post office, etc. and assumes that all gov't employees are the same.
