If you don't know what I mean, notice the Queen standing there, dressed like a housewife. She does that because she wants something other than clothes to be the topic when people talk about her. I think that might be the issue when Mrs. Obama wears a ridiculously expensive silly looking shirt. If Michelle feels differently about that than the Queen does, I suppose she can take the flak and probably likes to. If it should turn out the silly shirt is a tax write-off, then that shirt and Mr. Romneys racehorse amount to the same thing. Selfishness. Gimme. I deserve MORE than you. Just what the Queen avoids. While remaining one of the richest people in the World.

A few quick thoughts:

-- Norman Hartnell is rolling in his grave at the thought that Her Majesty looks like a housewife.

-- I doubt that the queen's custom-made clothing is all that near in price to a housewife's.

-- Have you never seen a picture of the queen decked out for the opening of Parliament or a state dinner? Seriously posh style, and that's not counting whatever she's wearing from one of the world's most incredible jewelry collections.

-- The difference in the queen's and first lady's styles may also owe something to the significant gap in their ages. (First ladies can't win, it seems. If they look plain or frumpy, folks gripe about that.)

I missed your referred to "Welfare Queen" please enlighten me. Not too ashamed to admit i have missed those reference, and ongoing back here, still do not understand.

She was a staple in Reagan's speeches: ""She has eighty names, thirty addresses, twelve Social Security cards and is collecting veteran's benefits on four non-existing deceased husbands. And she is collecting Social Security on her cards. She's got Medicaid, getting food stamps, and she is collecting welfare under each of her names. Her tax-free cash income is over $150,000."

The 'left' had a fit when Sarah Palin wore expensive clothes a few years ago. I guess it isn't a big deal this time around.

The 'left'?

"Republicans, RNC donors and at least one RNC staff member have e-mailed me tonight to share their utter (and not-for-attribution) disgust at the expenditures. ... The heat for this story will come from Republicans who cannot understand how their party would do something this stupid ... particularly (and, it must be said, viewed retroactively) during the collapse of the financial system and the probable beginning of a recession."

GOP donors critical of Palin's pricey threads

“As a Republican Eagle and a maxed-out contributor to McCain’s general campaign, I’d like my money back – he can still have my vote,” complained one irate donor on Wednesday.

“I’m not one who says a candidate shouldn’t wear fine clothes,” he added. “I’d just like to think they were successful enough in the private sector to have afforded their wardrobe with their own money, not the party’s or the campaign’s, which is really our money as contributors.”

Another big donor was sympathetic to the effort, but critical of the execution.

The Alaska governor was tapped by Arizona Sen. John McCain to become his vice presidential running mate just days before the Republican National Convention in Minnesota, the donor noted.

Given the short notice and the Palins’ relatively modest means, “she could probably not go into her closet at home in Alaska to come up with a wardrobe appropriate for her status as a vice presidential candidate," he said.

“Having said that, $150K is big money,” he added. “It kind of makes it worth running. Even if you lose, you’ve got a whole new closet.”

Yes, servant, only the "left" had a fit.

Do you ever read something beyond the message boards before posting?

adjusted for inflation and so on, this would put her in Mr Obama's "taxable wealthy" group. The overall policy would make it difficult to find her, as requesting ID is in some way oppressive confirming ID is racist and classist and whatever other excuse one might want or need. But She (the welfare queen) is made up, no one would do this.

Bottom line: there was no such woman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welfare_queen

Since Reagan never named a particular woman, the description can be viewed as an example of dramatic hyperbole.[citation needed] Critics Paul Krugman and Mark J. Green have argued that the story grossly exaggerates a minor case of welfare fraud.[5][6][need quotation to verify] In 1976, the New York Times reported that a woman from Chicago, Linda Taylor, was charged with using four aliases and of cheating the government out of $8,000.[6] She appeared again in the newspaper while the Illinois Attorney General continued investigating her case.[7] The woman was ultimately found guilty of "welfare fraud and perjury" in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.[8]

I agree. To be honest, Mrs. Obama's clothes don't generally do much for me. (Nor mine for her, I'd imagine.)

Good point, though the aristocracy does glam it up for state occasions.

Can't resist sharing a bit from my boundless store of Wilsoniana: When President and Mrs. Wilson visited Buckingham Palace in 1918 (the first incumbent first couple to do so), a guest at the state banquet asked Mrs. Wilson if she were a Quakeress. The first lady, an Episcopalian, was a little taken aback and asked what had prompted the question. "Because you don't wear a tiara," the grande dame explained. "Well, I would," Mrs. Wilson replied, "but my husband can't afford to give me one!"

If you feel that the Rafalca vs the American Family graphic was a hijack that derailed the thread go ahead and report it so the mods can delete it. However, they may feel that it is on topic due to the hypocrisy of Romney wanting to cut middle class salaries while enjoying the institutional advantage that he gains from the government's tax code largesse, that's a little offensive to people, especially considering Romney's view on anyone else who looks to the government for things like, I don't know, food and medicine.

I wanted to post the graphic on the Romney and Animals thread, but that had been locked, perhaps due to the gay rights advocates hijack.

Regarding this thread, joether summed up my feelings nicely:

quote:

When one meets the Queen of England (just like any other national figure), one wears the best clothes they can to show respect. In fact, its the norm not the exception that if a lady maybe meeting the Queen directly, to offer clothes to be worn (thats known in the business world, Sanity, as 'Free Advertising'). Could it be possible that a few designers approached the Obama family before hand to offer something to wear that would show off their wares?

Actually.....it`s been a pretty bad news week......for Mitt......[:D]

It must burn the pants off the looneys that Mitten`s and the wife are thought of as out of touch and ummmmm....less than worldly.

The poorest of North Americans spend more in a month on coffee than anyone in the poorest nation spends on clothing in a year.

No one runs a photo on that.

What difference does it make what she spent (or was lent) on her clothing

If she spent it, clearly with a couple million in income over the last few years with his books and other things, they can afford it.

If it was lent...the guy or gal who lent it is hoping it'll get noticed and cause sales.

No harm no foul.

You know, I'm starting to like you.

Is there ANYTHING that he can stay committed to or NOT flip-flop on or do the popularity pols make those determinations for him?

~~~~~~~~
Actually fuxnews and other whacko outlets mention "facts" like this all the time.Then we hear them regurgitated here.
The pitch usually is that we have the richest poor people in the world so they don`t matter.
Eat your dog food granny and STFU if you`re going to spend my tax dollars buying it.....
The extremist Heritage Foundation claims the poor aren`t really poor b/c 90% of the poor have refrigerators and that 81% have microwave ovens.
Stephen is correct when he says that if you have the strength to brush the flies off your eyeballs....you`re not really poor.....
Hell, blame Limbaugh? this is his neighborhood, but before his start. Actually this little article in 1977 seems to back up the existence of this fictionalized straw woman.
Oh I see you need some help here.....
The gist of that story was she went on a wild shopping spree at every high-end store she could get into....... with a RNC credit card......embarrassing herself and McGramps.....not that she was a flashy dresser.....
I don`t recall anyone saying she was to flashy.......more the opposite really.
You`re quite welcome.[:D]
75000 to 150000 for a campaign season vs 6800 for a cocktail party, same kinds of pattern, but why is this against Palin and Reagan
