I agree with what Lady Pact said, the passport does not indicate that you are available to work legally.

A valid US passport is considered enough documentation to work in the US.

I do have a passport but would I be seen as a problem if I wanted to use that rather than a driver's license and social security card?

Nope. At the stage where I think you are, they just care that you can prove you are legal to work. However, don't be surprised if later down the line when you are filing out your other papers for tax purposes that you are asked to show proof that the SSN you have on that paperwork is yours. For most, that's their social security card. If you don't have that, you can go to the Social Security Administration and they will provide you with a sheet saying that you are in the process of replacing the card. That covers stuff like people have lost their card, name change due to marriage, etc until you receive the new card in the mail, but you'll still be allowed to work.

I wasn't sure if you had a passport. They just changed the requirements for military folks just a few years ago, so that's not always a guarantee.

After working for three years to extract information from the WWW and then spending four years putting information on there, I have developed privacy concerns. So when a temp agency wants me to provide my social security card at my first meeting with them, I wonder - is this standard practice? I'd prefer to give it up when there is a firm job offer or I am filling out a W-4.

Thoughts?

Thoughts on how to diplomatically word my objection?

Thanks!

It's easy...here's how I would respond:

"I'm not really looking for a job...I came in for the free coffee. If you want my SSI #, you'll have to employ me" to which their response will be "when you give us your SSI#, we can fill out the appropriate forms and potentially hire you".

You: "I don't think so because....anyone with a left brain still working could have found my SSI # with just my name, address and a phone bill so....I'd rather just not have a job...thank you for your time".

Sounds like y'all operate the same down there as in Canada. Anybody can ask, no one is obliged, until they want to be paid, therefore taxed. At the actual job offer acceptance they need to know who you are.

It's a catch 22 though. If you don't give it to them they're really not going to give a job to you. They won't see you as being as eager for a job as the others who were willing to give all their info.

That's the game. You either play it or you don't.

I'd thought it was odd to require my SSN before an offer was made but thanks especially to LadyPact I see it is standard practice for temp agencies as they are responsible for ensuring candidates are eligible to work in the US before they offer them to employers.

I'm late to the discussion here but concur with everything LadyPact said.

Additionally, temp agencies work for the organizations who hire them to find people for the job. They do not work for the temp employees - not usually, anyway. They make their money from the fees they charge the organizations once an employee is placed, and even more fees if the temp employee is hired as a Full Time Employee (FTE). So they cater all they can to the companies who need positions filled. The employees are the commodity. And with so many people looking for work, the competition is high. Providing a SSN for employment (or for the hopes of employment) is standard practice. If you hesitate, or balk at their conditions, they'll move on to the next body that can potentially fill the position.

It's pretty basic stuff. It's on any app we have and if they don't give it to us beforehand, we don't ask them for an interview.

Nor does an SSN... I've got an SSN that's still valid, despite my having left the US a decade ago

people that arent American and dont live in the US or never lived in the US can have a ssn.. there are various reasons for it, perhaps you go to vegas and gamble, if you win, having a ssn allows you to deduct your previous gambling losses against your winnings and reduce the tax the casino is required to take before giving you your winnings.. or you might have investments or rental real estate and if you dont have a ssn then there is a hold back on that income or the sale of the investment or real estate.. oddly enough, if your real estate increased in value considerably, the holdback might end up being a less taxing way of going than using a ssn and filling out a tax return..

but usually ssn cards that are for those purposes and given to non-Americans/non-residents have "not valid for work" across it and i am sure the equivalent label given those SSNs in the e-verify system.. so yes, your ssn is valid (for US based tax purposes as I already stated) but if you are not an American and your work visa expired, your ssn likely states so in the computer database and if you tried to apply for a job the e-verify would spit your number out as not valid to work..

Well, I can beat all that. My employer a bank, never asked for a drug test! They wanted me Fingerprinted instead. I thought it was standard practice to ask for a drug test.

You know the great "War on Drugs" and all.

All they wanted was my fingerprints. I could be dropping acid, snorting coke or shooting heroin for all they know

After your rants regarding being let off and not finding new work, I'm glad to hear that this seems to be resolved now and you found a job.

It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out why they want fingerprints of somebody who works in a bank and if I remember rightly in IT there, they simply want to make sure that nobody with a criminal record applies, you can fake papers but you can't fake fingerprints and if yours are on record and show you as a criminal, they can eliminate your application straight away. It also might be easier to track you down with the aide of your fingerprints...

As for you being a coke addict or smackhead - highly unlikely, they tend to be extremely skinny to the point of emaciation due to loss of appetite. Of course there are exceptions, Lush Limbaugh was still a disgusting obese blob when he was stoned out of his mind on Vicodin, but then you can argue that he doesn't resemble anything remotely human.

I have no problem providing my SSN for payroll paperwork (I've put it on the W4 but not on the application at the agency).

The mere fact that the company has placed a job ad is not reason enough for every employee/recruiter who can get his hands on my job history to get my SSN along with it.

synthetic opioids (from what I have seen) do not cause the extreme wieht loss that natural opioids do.

That could explain it, though I thought addiction to a substance kind of overrides natural impulses such as appetite?

That only becomes an issue when one has to make a choice between food and their high. Limbaugh has enough money where that isn't a concern.

not always, LadyC. I have known opiate addicts that starve themselves, but others that stuff themselves.

I have known meth addicts that do the same. (I was one of those, but since I eat very lihtly sober, no bi stretch..)
