Mitt Romney invited to Poland by Lech Walesa. Oh the irony.

'He supported Solidarity during martial law.' Walesa was quoted as saying.

Really? Romney makes his money (AFAIK) by cutting costs, reducing overheads and replacing workers with cheap labour. He is about as anti-trade unionist as they come. Solidarity started in Gdansk in 1980 as a trade union.

No gaffe this time. Just a meeting between a has been and a never will be.

Sanity -> RE: Poland's turn to get dissed by Romney. (7/31/2012 3:31:10 PM)

It would be nice to have a president who talked straight. Beside being right in Poland he is maliciously attacked by a pack of rabid ankle nipper dogs for

1. Pointing out that the reason Israel excels when Palestine does the opposite of excel is that there are cultural differences (true)

2. He was an expert on the Olympics, there were legitimate questions as to whether British security was ready, and he dared to inquire about that

WTF, has the world gone insane

Why? Why is the conventional wisdom that politicians must be perfect in all things? It is an impossible standard to live up to and if, by some miracle, someone could their words are still going to be twisted around into something stupid or nasty by the opposition (which always gives a pass to its own side). Just once I'd like to see the President or some other politician or candidate listen to to some reporter's inane, condescending, question and then reply, "Jane, you ignorant slut."

Why are we expected to play along with these stupid "gotch ya" word games?

An expert on the Olympics?  Walk me thru the Richard Jewell disaster, Willard was as expert on the Olympics as Mike Brown was on FEMA.

Journalism doesnt have anything to do with making the news, and what we need are journalists on these trips

Making the news on Romney is as bad as failing to report the news regarding Obama

There is no real journalism among the old guard media any longer, though what was once there was spotty

quote:

ORIGINAL: Marc2b

quote:

I dont care what it says about the reporters, its their job to dig up dirt.

Again, what does that say about someone's character if they regard it as their job to "dig up dirt" rather than the truth?

quote:

If an aide loses his cool like that & so easily, then imo he shouldnt be doing that job.. He is just not in control of himself and not trained well enough.. but then I have never been impressed by hot-heads..

Who says it was "so easily?" Does this guy have a reputation for loosing his cool? If so then you have a case, if not, then how about cutting him a little slack? In a job where loosing one's cool could endanger lives (eg, airline pilot, 911 dispatcher) a much higher standard is understandable but in this case... ?

And the fact that some politician's aide told a reporter to kiss his ass is not the issue as I see it. The issue is the utter ridiculousness of people making such a big deal about it, the extrapolation of this non-issue into "AND THIS IS WHY WE MUST NOT VOTE ROMNEY!," and the expectation that I'll go along with this farce. There are plenty of reasons not to vote for Romney in regard to his stance on issues... This utterly insignificant "issue" is not one of them.

Romney has a passel of journalists along for the ride. And he's so spooked about the bad press he's getting that he refuses to talk with them. So you have ace journalists brought across the world just to watch the guy, and not ask him questions. They're getting restive.

And it speaks worlds about him that he'd rather not speak to the press than learn to deal with them. That's NOT a good sign.

Sanity -> RE: Poland's turn to get dissed by Romney. (7/31/2012 3:49:57 PM)

Were they brought to make the news, which judging by the questions the sleazbag "journalists" shouted out is what they were set on doing...

Or were they brought to report the news. Report on what happened during the trip, which was the actual news

And Romney gave several in depth interviews along the way, so the point that he doesnt speak to the press is not factual

You're missing the point.

This is a PR trip. He's got the press there ready to roll. And he has no idea what to do with it.

So he's getting himself negative PR instead. Steven is right. Not a good sign.

The actual news is that Romney and his team have consistently screwed up. Diplomacy is a fine art, and Romney and friends are bulls in a china shop. Consistently. And it HAS been getting reported, relentlessly.

Of course he's facing hostile questions. He's given interviews to a few select journalists. For the rest of the journalists, this is a frustrating, wasted trip. Not only is Romney antagonizing foreign governments, he's antagonizing the media.

When Obama did the same thing four years ago, it was to show that he could hobnob with heads of state, and he succeeded. Even with Obama's example, Romney has failed miserably. He should have spoken with Finance officials of foreign governments and had economic discussions - that would have reinforced the image of a finance guy. FFS, Clinton met with barons of domestic industry prior to the election in 1992 to show his focus on the economy - that idea isn't new.

Romney is running an epically bad campaign. I don't think that he's any stupider than Obama - he just can't surround himself with competent people. Which is of course the major task of a President.

Thats the meme you are supposed to drink in, anyway [;)]

Lets go back through the list

His crimes were asking about Londons readiness for the Olympics, a very innocent and well meaning question. The far left there went into hysterics, which was their bad and not Mitts

He commented on the cultural differences between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and to even posit that there is a difference is supposed to be a crime against humanity even if its true

And his press secretary had a moment of clarity with some extremely rude members of the press...

Meanwhile, the real news of the trip went unreported

I keep telling you you dont know left from right, Mitts got more stick from out right wing press (mail, Sun, telegraph.) than he ever did from the left.

Spouting off doesnt make Mitts right, recent middle east history is the reason the palestinian economy is where it is.
And his press secretary had a moment of clarity with some extremely rude members of the press...

Real news such as ? .......... Your assertion Mitts did several in depth intervies is also wrong, he did, however read some scripted statements and refuse to take questions...

No, his dad joined Nash-Kelvin in 1948 which morphed into American Motors Corp. and became CEO in 1954.

George Romney mocked the products of the "Big Three" automakers as "gas-guzzling dinosaurs" and became one of the first high-profile, media-savvy business executives.

Oh and BTW accomplished all of that...without a college degree.

Substantive questions ? Ok, let's Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly and the guys handle this...right ? Surely you jest. The right today deosn't know what 'substance' is.

You're not making any sense. Where did I bring left or right into this? I don't even know who that reporter works for, much less what her personal politics are. Right or left, I don't really give a shit. It is being a dick, looking to increase ratings by ginning up controversy that irks me.

Not quite.

Mitt Romney met with Lech Walesa, the Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk but he snubbed Jaroslaw Kaczynski, twin brother of the late President Lech Kaczynski and leader of the Polish Law and Justice Party.

Now it might not have been reported by Western media, but it was noticed by the Poles and reported in the Polish media.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski narrowly lost the 2010 Polish Presidential election, Law and Justice is seen as the second party in Poland, and the Kaczynski twins were both close friends with Walesa and also were members of the Polish Solidarity Round Table talks in 1989.

His brother, the former President was behind the Warsaw Uprising Museum, and was killed in the Smollensk plane crash en route to commemorate Polish officers killed in Katyn.

Bit strange of Romney to make no mention of either of the Kaczynski twins, don't you think?
