Myself ... I could care less.

But NBC is saying they are "ONLY" breaking even on showing them ....

My question to them is why even show them?

Nobody watches the Summer Olympics. Heck, we don't even understand 90% of the sports! [:D]

And after all .. we are approaching Pennant Races ... the start of NFL training camp and exhibition season .... and college football too!

So is ANYONE watching the Olympics on NBC .. (or CBC) ( or any other outlet) .... and why?

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/1/2012 5:56:02 PM)

I'm not watching all of the broadcasts (who could possibly have that kind of time on their hands other than young children on summer vacation?), but I am certainly following them. It was special to see Michael Phelps win his 19th medal last night and create history, yet again. It was special to see the women's gymnastics team perform so well last night, too. Even though these events aired on NBC after they had occurred. That's probably my biggest pet peeve of the coverage is no live coverage of major events during the day. If you want to maintain any suspense you have to not follow what went on that day, and sit down to the pre-recorded NBC coverage. I think that's weird.

I'm sure they are making money...I think they just want to make it sound like they are doing everyone a favor by covering the games. As I seem to recall the opening ceremony last weekend had pretty amazing ratings. I'm sure the advertising dollars that night alone were big money.

I like diving, synchronized diving, gymnastics (men's and women's) and watch some of the swimming. I watch far less of the Winter Olympics (just figure skating (men's/women's/pairs) and ice dancing.

Basically, NBC just announced to the Olympic Committee that they won't pay as much for the broadcast rights next time.

Chuckles .. Hi Steven ...

Guess there should be no surprise to that! ROFL

Myself, I suspect the Summer Olympic audience has a certian Gender Sway to it. Some Ladies like a lot of events.

Yet I am watching baseball and football (American Football!) right now! And I suspect most men are.

The only Olympic event I have watched this last decade ... is Hockey in the Winter. Then too, I am from Detroit! LOL

Indeed! I heard about the US women's gymnastics team on the radio driving home from work. One of them is from my state, so they get covered, locally.

BUT YOU HIT ON A KEY POINT HERE ... Why would I get Home, and watch, when I already knew the outcome?

Heck, They ARE competing with Major League Baseball, NFL Training Camp News ... and ..

ESPN commentary on the sports day ROFL

Or HOW can You, with children at home ... watch reruns for hours? (on second thought, don't answer THAT question! [;)])!

And like, what sports are those? [;)] [;)] [;)]

It is nice you enjoy them ... and I guess that is why they are on TV .... albeit .. at a future .. lower price to the network! [;)]

seekingOwnertoo -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/1/2012 7:18:08 PM)

Had to add ... this just in ... from Fox Sports ...

"With thousands of Olympics tickets going back for sale in an effort to fill empty seats, you would think scoring just one while in London would be fairly easy.

Think again.

If you’re an American, you’re mostly out of luck
"

Wow, now more reasons to spend money on the Olympics! ROFL ...

Guess NBC should get the broadcast rights for free! No? [:D]

Marini -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/1/2012 9:53:51 PM)

I love watching the Olympics, I always have loved watching the Olympics!

I freaking adore Michael Phelps/who is a native of Maryland and my homeboy!!!!!!

Much love to you Michael!!!!!!
[sm=bowdown.gif][sm=bowdown.gif]

Thinking about attending the airport/local celebration to welcome him back home, and I NEVER do this sort of thing.

But damn it, it's Michael Phelps!!!
I doubt anyone will top his record in my lifetime.

Go Michael Go Michael Go Michael!!!!!!!!!

I am damn proud of most of the athletes, especially the Americans.
We have so many great, great contenders this year!!!
I have always loved watching the Olympics {most of the events}, and I always will!!!!

Also very proud of : entire female gymnastic team, shot out to Gabby Douglas/another local, entire male and female swim teams, especially Missy Franklin, Alison Shmitt, Dana Vollmer, Shannon Vreeland, Lochtie, Hell all of them!!!

I still remember watching Nadia Comaneci, Jackie Joyner Kersey, Dominique Dawes, Shawn Johnson, Michael Johnson, too many to list!!

Yeah, you could say I am watching the summer olympics, and enjoying them as much or more than I always have through the years.

Just realized I have been an Olympic watching nerd all my life.

I am a Special Education Teacher and proud daughter of a Special Education Teacher.
I can watch the Summer Olympics until my eyes pop out of my head, EVERY summer.

With all the coverage on not just NBC, but MSNBC, and online/you tube etc.
Anyone can watch the Summer 2016 games as much as they want, FOREVER.
Also, for those that have OnDemand, the Olympics can be watched On-Demand.
I have seen a lot of the coverage at the gym, on the treadmill!
I can walk for hours on the treadmill.
I am an Olympian walker!

I am plotting and planning and figuring how I can get my arse to Rio in 2016, baby.

What happens in Rio, stays in Rio.

DesFIP -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/2/2012 7:33:30 AM)

I'm not because they aren't showing any of the sports I want to see. If the US is likely to win a medal, they show it.
So we've had every damn swim race but none of the dressage. No archery, not even on the Spanish station.

yeah, I am watching the olympics, a lot of people are.
Really sorry it's not in your time zone but that's what happens when a truely global event is staged in different parts of the world.
You appear to be interested in the NFL training camp and college football however I imagine that the 10000+ competitors in the Olympics would all tell you that it is the pinnacle of sporting achievement.
Have fun watching the packers or the patriots becoming "world champions" in a sport the rest of the world doesn't give a shit about.
Most of the rest of the world will be watching athletes become OLYMPIANS

ps. why are you so concearned with the NBC budget?

this, but I'd rather watch the jumping than the dressage.

LaTigresse -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/2/2012 8:13:20 AM)

Nope. Haven't seen any of it and haven't the interest.

At home, we got rid of the Direct tv thing so the only thing that can be watched are DVDs and old VHS tapes. We are just too busy and have too much to do to spend the time sitting and watching tv, to make it worth the cost.

Here at work, while I have a great big flat screen tv on the wall in my office, with a bazillion channels available........it is nearly always off. Unless one of the guys wants to see what's going on with some sports something or other.

A dear friend sent me several links so that I could watch it online, but again..........just not interested enough to bother.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/2/2012 8:24:31 AM)

I intend to watch the equestrian stuff online. I'm used to lousy coverage on tv, so I watch whatever is there.

My comment about only people on vacation would have the time was not meant to imply that only people who are on vacation would want to watch. The implication was that if you work in an environment where you cannot break to watch something (and I know many people in that situation), you simply can't watch very much coverage during the day. It's not like when I was a child and could sit in front of the television for literally hours on end during the day watching Olympic coverage. That's all I meant. Yes, the Internet allows one to watch particular things "on demand" so to speak, but to me that's not the same experience as sitting and literally watching for hours as all the athletes from all the countries compete in all events. Just a different way of experiencing them.

I hope you are able to make it to Rio in 2016. How much fun would that be! [:D]

Delilya -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/2/2012 8:53:19 AM)

I am seeing it because the lady I take care of watches. Only sport I am interested in is Baseball. Go Braves (yeah, yeah, I know).

needlesandpins -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/2/2012 10:04:22 AM)

i have watched quite a bit, but then i'm in the uk. however, i've had to watch all of the dressage through the live video link on bbciplayer. they never show any of the equestrian unless it jumping. so today i've sat and watched all the dressage to see GB in the lead at the end of the day, and Canada disqualified for one of their horses freaking out. i was actually quiet emotional about it feeling very sorry for both horse, and rider. all to ride for. seats were pretty much full for the dressage which i think speaks volumes, but still it's never on main stream tv. even the eventing dressage doesn't get shown here. in fact we have lost alot of our equestrian coverage in general to fucking sky tv which is just wrong.

i've also seen alot of the rowing, which i love watching, some of the diving, swimming, and cycling.

i'll stick with the live video link for the equestrian stuff though because i'm sick of it being interupted on tv for fricking interviews from some other sport that we don't need to see until later.

myotherself -> RE: Any one Watching the Summer Olympics? (8/2/2012 10:27:12 AM)

I assumed all those new BBC Olympics channels would have loads of live feeds? I know the dressage and eventing and stuff should have been live, if only cos of Zara Phillips being in it, and our chance of a medal.
