Not a bad idea, Muse! Strapped local governments could use the extra cash. And the ballot clerk at my polling place is kinda cute.

DomKen -> RE: Searching for the Undecided Voter (8/4/2012 2:18:37 PM)

Vote fraud is so rare as to be statistically non existent.

Vote suppression, which the conservative movement engages in with vigor, is a huge problem and voter ID requirements is just them moving from outside the law techniques to creating a legal way to suppress the vote of 'undesirables.'

Owner59 -> RE: Searching for the Undecided Voter (8/4/2012 3:38:53 PM)

At this point ,election fraud and voter suppression........ are the grand oil party`s best chances of "winning".

They`re even admitting it.......without knowing it.......thanks rich.

However it's painted, it's a deliberate obstacle to voting.

I would change that just a bit, Muse.

However it's painted, it's a deliberate obstacle to vote fraud.

And here in PA, they wont even prove vote fraud...

It's been shown:

1. Requiring voter ID will prevent more Dems from voting than Republicans.
2. There have been few if any cases where voter fraud existed, that would have been prevented by requiring voter ID.

tazzygirl -> RE: Searching for the Undecided Voter (8/4/2012 6:11:39 PM)

Imagine the money to be made by proving you (a person, not you specifically) committed voter fraud at the request of pollsters or a politician.

And yet we hear nothing.

Of course in this case "undesirables" constitute any voting block perceived as likely to lean Democratic in their voting practices [8|]

So nobody has anything to say about the undecided voters, unless they are both politically disengaged, and living on the fringe of society as well?

"Poll shows President Obama ahead in swing states"

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/08/01/2924691/poll-shows-president-obama-ahead.html#storylink=cpy

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- President Barack Obama was favored by at least 50 percent of likely voters in the key battleground states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, a poll released Wednesday shows.

Obama had a lead of 11 percentage points, 53 percent to 42 percent, over presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania. The president leads his GOP challenger by a margin of 51 percent to 45 percent in Florida and 50 percent to 44 percent in Ohio in the random telephone poll conducted July 24 to 30 by Quinnipiac University, CBS News and the New York Times. It was the first measure of likely voters in the crucial swing states.

$18 to be able to vote? Sounds like a poll tax to me.

No.  The $18 is an estimate of what the fee is to get a photo ID (YMMV).  If it was a special, single purpose id, then you might call it that, and have a point I could agree with.  Since you need photo ID to legally do all sorts of things, then no, it's nothing like a poll tax.  Requiring ID to check in at the polls is an obligation to prove that you are the person whose ballot you are picking up.

If it should happen that a person without ID should go get it in order to vote, they'll still find all sorts of other uses for it.

Uh, you're in America and you showed up isn't enough? Are you expecting Canadians to bus in and vote?

You do know a bag ladies vote is just as good as yours?

Probably even more informed.

TheHeretic -> RE: Searching for the Undecided Voter (8/4/2012 10:50:08 PM)

xssve -> RE: Searching for the Undecided Voter (8/4/2012 10:56:07 PM)

I guess we'll find out, if that's really your question.

Mere people here are probably thinking about how the right deals - or doesn't - with uncertainty.

Thus, the shift in topic: the anticipated (read: "predictable") attempts to make sure only the "right" people vote, re: the quoted remark.

Try to keep up.

Canadian libs can't show up for their own elections, judging from the last outcome up there, Xssve. [:D]

As for bag ladies, if they are of the variety that would know what day of the week it is, were registered to vote, and competent in getting to their polling place, they are going to know exactly which bag has the important personal papers in it.  Have you ever actually dealt with bag ladies, or any sort of homeless person for that matter, or are they just things you know enough about to try and throw insults with?

The subject is the undecided voter, as reflected in the poll numbers posted above.  About 5-6% who haven't made up their minds, or aren't even paying any attention at all.

Actually, the whole concept bothers me. Both Dem and GOP can take for granted 90+% of the nation's voters and focus just on the "swingers". (I just had to say that. [:)]) I don't like being taken for granted...

I hear that, Steve.  At least you are in a state considered "in play."  Here in CA, the candidates just show up to create traffic jams on the way to fundraisers.

My suggestion would be to make sure that any television you watch in the last two weeks of October be recorded, so you can fast forward through the campaign commercials.

I thught that went without saying.

Owner59 -> RE: Searching for the Undecided Voter (8/5/2012 8:32:54 AM)

One of my favorite con-asinine explanations for their voter suppression efforts is that there "might be voter fraud" so we gotta do this......

Usually.....the government and law enforcement wait till AFTER a citizen commits a crime, before they`re punished......

Amazing how these "anti-big-government" types are perfectly fine with using government as a weapon against their opponents.Fuck`n cowards.

I think that's the crux of the argument. The so-called voter fraud would be what? Someone votes more than once? I hate to break this news but, voter ID in many cases won't do a damn thing to mitigate this "risk". Many rural counties lack a central database to track these things. Further, the policies and procedures are not universal. They are set by each state's partisan Secretary of State.

The fact that there has NEVER been any proven significant impact on any national election due to this type of "voter fraud", combined with the clearly proven fact that it is a severe obstacle to as many as 10% of the population in some counties (e.g. in Pennsylvania), makes the cons of such an idea outweigh the pros 10,000-1.

Keeping 80,000 people from voting in order to prevent a half dozen hypothetical cases of "voter fraud" is ridiculous (and I mean that in the truest sense of the word).

Let's call this what this really is (and as the House Majority Leader in Pennsylvania basically admitted)... Voter Suppression to facilitate a Romney win.

My question would be.....How can you be "undecided",when the differences are so stark, the visions so diametrically opposed, the partisanship so defined....how can you be "undecided"?
I have a hard time wrapping my head around the reality of this great big block of "undecideds wherein our political fortunes will actually be decided.
If these folks have truly made it thru all of this bullshit without choosing a side, are they really best qualified to be throwing elections one way or the other ?
