When I was about 18 I went to hospital with a dislocated shoulder. While I was waiting in the cubicle waiting for the doctor to come and put my shoulder back, there was a guy in the next cubicle who was complaining of deafness, pain and a buzzing sensation in one ear. The doc had a look and I remember him saying 'holy shit!' before running out of the cubicle. Apparently there was a live wasp in this guy's ear, and it had been there for over 24 hours. It had gone in headfirst, making it difficult to remove without it stinging the guy. They had to drip chloroform in his ear to anaesthetise the wasp, then remove it with tweezers. I recall sleeping with cotton wool plugs in my ears for a few weeks afterwards...
