Does it seem weird that him and his wealthy buddies are paying < 15% in taxes and yet still complain that taxes are too high and they need tax-cuts?

Fifteen Percent.

What rate are YOU paying?

( I still think the 'smoking gun' is the profits from Stericycle, which processes Planned Parenthoods "medical waste". )

I think the smoking gun is he gave more to his church, then he paid in taxes, there is also the new claim about yet another form missing from the single tax return he released.

Only 1 tax return, the other he claims he will release before the election, so the Monday night before election day. Also other members of the GOP are refusing to release more than 2 years, of course conservatives are fine with this, and see nothing wrong with it, until the first Dem only releases 2 years ................................

How is his church donations a "smoking gun?"

its the amount he gave in comparison to what he paid in taxes, the smoking gun is more for what it will do for his falling image and he is doing his best to keep his religion out of the debate... though religion was a target the GOP used against Obama in 2008

also the missing forms they refuse to release which looks at bank accounts based out of the US, including his 401 K (FBAR) There are questions about how is IRA grew at the rate it did, since their are limits on what you can add..

and according to Bloomberg newsAs Bloomberg News notes, “In 2008, according to the IRS, the median adjusted gross income was $33,048, which Romney made in less than a day. Reaching the top 1 percent of taxpayers required $380,354 in adjusted gross income, about Romney’s earnings in a week......

I expect he gave LESS to his church than he should have.

He is an elder, if 10% of his gross didn't hit SLC, he could be ex-communicated, and he certainly won't be going to heaven with the rest of the Mormrons.

That's why he's shitting his pants.

I think the real thing there is Mitt's statements that with charity they're at like 20%...

20 - 13 = 7.

So, his "Tithing" which should be 10% is actually only 7%.

He's ripping off his own church, too.

he will be excommunicated if it ever comes out that's true.  so much for his deep and abiding religious faith.

He is an elder,

If I recall correctly, all LDS males over 12 are "elders."

Also, being asked to tithe and being required to tithe are two different things.

Its hard to say how much he donated as apparently much of what he donated was "appreciated stock" of various Bain corps..

personally.. imo,.. someone as tight with money as Romney, whatever amount it was.. that probably hurt him to give away as much as he did..

and a bishop.

Right from the Church's website, is a direct quote from the Family Home Evening Lesson on Tithing:

Discuss the following attitudes and decide on the right solution:
1.  A man once said, "I pay tithing on all my salary after deductions, since I don't get the money that is taken for taxes." Is he correct? (Tithing is one-tenth of all our interest or increase, before anything else is taken out. See D&C 119:4.)
Reference : Family Home Evening Resource Book, Lesson Ideas, Tithing, 227''

http://www.pbs.org/mormons/faqs/controversies.html

there is more, but as a bishop, and ex-bishop now.....(and this goes for mormons too):

the Apostle Paul’s qualifications: “A bishop then must be blameless (not perfect, but not a commandment breaker) the husband of one wife (perhaps Romney not having any girlfriends is why some are turning to the Mormon feminists), vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre (being rich doesn’t mean you’re given to filthy lucre); but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children (several boys) in subjection with all gravity; For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? (Or the nation?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil” (study 1Timothy 3:1-7).

And by disobeying the apostles in SLC........................

You are right, it is 18. It is part of their second tier priesthood.

I thought you could add whatever you like to an IRA, you can only claim ($3500?) tax free?

he put in stock, at an unappreciated value, so likely much lower than it really was worth.. some of those Bain corps appreciated considerably in value.. the investors were getting something like 50% avg appreciation per year..

but here is one article/blog that talks/speculates in more detail on his IRA/offshore accounts... enjoy!..

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/01/19/romney-iras-offshore-investments-helping-his-tax-bill/

eta- actually,.. this article shows just how profitable some of those deals were (& how fast $$$ was made)..

"Just how good became clear when Bain Capital and another private equity group bought and sold credit reporting service Experian in just seven weeks, netting $251 million each. The Wall Street Journal dubbed it "one of the quickest big hits in Wall Street history."
For investors, Bain Capital rained money as it bought and sold more than 100 companies. During Romney's tenure, according to an outside investment firm, Bain Capital's first five private equity funds returned an average of 173% each year on realized investments, an astonishing record."

imo its ironic that the govt keeps average people from investing in companies like Bain, since you would need to be an "accredited investor" to be able to profit as Romney and his investors did.. the laws put in place to "protect" ya'll are the ones that restricts your options so help keep you "poor" and not profit like the big boys..

I think part of it's because it brings attention to how much money the Mormon Church gets. They believe that you tithe 10% of your income. The Mormon Church makes $7billion per year in tithes and donations and is estimated to be worth $35billion.

The Mormon Church is elephant in the room that none of the Republicans are talking about.

When the Mormons were told to leave Illinois and Missouri in the 1830s under threat of extermination, it was primarily because their voting practices scared the government. Joesph Smith told them how to vote and they voted as a block. They swayed politics.

When Utah was coming into the Union, those same concerns came with it. Many still have a large distrust for that Church.

So, I think Mitt would prefer to not remind everyone that he's tied strongly to the Mormon Church. I think that he's trying to hide his tithing percentage from his own church and dealing with the fallout from the Mormon Church wouldn't make Mitt or the Church look good. And it certainly would remind everyone that he's a Mormon.
