Both + 'new wave'. BLack Flag et al were too hardcore for me then.

The Cure was too "emo" (although that term hadn't been coined then..)

ooooo i love Echo too, and The Cure. i've been blasting myself with the forest today. my playmate once, off the cuff, wrote me a story used the titles on the cure's greatest hits. it was very good.
