I believe it is a personal choice; plain and simple. Ever since 1973 in this country, no one that doesn't want to have a baby (except a male) has been forced to assume that responsibility. I don't care what personal choices you make, as long as they don't affect me. As a person who is self-employed and looking forward to expanding my business, why should I have to pay for your personal choices? Where does it end? Do I have to pay for my receptionist to get her nails done? Do I have to pay for my maintenance man to go get his bottle of Jack Danials on a Friday night? I don't care if my receptionist has a French manicure. If I required it, I'd be liable for the cost. I am liable for my maintenance man's uniform because I require he wear safe clothing. I'm not liable for his bottle of booze. Now, if a lady's baby is going to benefit my company, I guess I'd be willing to pay her for maternity leave. But, as it stands, now; being a parent is her personal choice and it doesn't benefit me a bit (in fact, it costs me money because I have to pay someone to replace her). I am NOT speaking against family leave. I'm speaking against paid family leave. Peace and comfort, Michael Edited to add: I would support up to two years of unpaid family leave but why should I pay, twice to fill one position?
