Hmmmmmmmmmm... didn't scan your entire post there, but did you spell 'offence' with an 's' (thus  turning it into 'offense') by accident, or was it on purpose?

Pretty damned offensive, don't you think, lol?

Kree -> RE: Watching what you say (6/15/2006 5:10:45 PM)

I have watched this topic with interest.  There seems to be a blind acceptance of poor spelling and grammar similar to everyone at Thanksgiving refusing to look at Grandma when she farts at the table.  A number of posts I have read require a Dick Tracy decoder ring to figure out wtf the person is trying to say.  One particular person (unnamed) claims to be well educated, with stellar grades, yet she can't spell the simplest words and pluralizing a word properly is beyond her.  My question is this:  We seem to be expected to accept this unintelligible writing style and look for content... why is it unreasonable to expect someone who posts to respect their audience enough to use proper spelling and grammar?

I'm not looking for anything on CM other than intelligent discussion, but if I were, poor spelling and grammar COULD be a deciding factor in a decision regarding meeting someone.  To me, the inability to communicate in writing would make me question whether someone could communicate verbally, emotionally, and intellectually.  Like I said I'm not looking, but I would imagine that there are people who are looking who feel exactly the same way.  Just a thought.

(I make typo errors, but it is because I type with three fingers who are watched over by a seeing eye thumb.  I DO read what I am posting before sending it into cyber space to look for those typos.  Perhaps if people weren't in such a rush to meet their quota of 75 posts per day, they could do the same.)

I agree, we should be able to forgive misspellers and bad grammar but I will confess,  if it is too bad, I don't reply to it.

It's spelled "offense" in America and "offence" in Britain.

If there's one thing I can't stand more than bad spelling, it's people who make mistakes while they're correcting someone else.

Generally the way I look at it, if someone is so obsessed with correct spelling, and proper punctuation that they are going to go out of their way to write a message to someone about it and out them on a public forum, well they aren't the type I'd want anything to do with anyway. It seems a misplacement of priorities to me, as in they are viewing the form as being more important than the function. Ass backwards, I can easily decipher without putting any appreciable effort about 99% of the posts. If someone needs a perfectly formed sentence to do the same, maybe the learning disability is with the reader and not the writer.
Perhaps? Just a thought

Now I have read some posts that baffle me, very few, but generally the ones targetted were easy enough to understand.

I'm reasonably good with spelling and grammer.  Even so it was MORE THAN ONCE that I found a PM in my inbox from a person or two who took issue with my spelling.  Now THAT'S someone commited to education.  ;)
