Jon Stewart: RNC theme shows 'a party-wide persecution complex' On his show Wednesday night, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart took the Republican National Convention to task for basing their entire theme on an out-of-context quote — “We built it.” “When was the last time we heard a catchphrase that was such a peculiar mix of braggadocio and whiny petulance?” Stewart wondered, playing a clip of actor Charlie Sheen infamously saying “wow, winning.” “We built that is the Republican retort to President Obama’s collectivism,” he continued, “and it is one of the first political mantras I’ve heard in a long time that sounds like your supposed to say the word ‘duh’ beforehand.” The theme is meant to mock President Barack Obama for supposedly believing that businesses were not created by entrepreneurs, but by the government. However, the full context of the quote makes it clear that is not what the President was saying. Obama said that an individual’s personal drive allowed him or her to succeed, but that no one could succeed purely on their own. Stewart jokingly said it was “obvious” that Republicans were going to be nuanced about the theme and not “overplay their hand.” He then played of clip of the RNC song, “We built it.” Stewart described the theme as “a convention theme at a political campaign cynically based around something the president never actually said” and “a party-wide persecution complex, where any reference to the collective good is somehow taken as a denigration of an individual’s achievement.” He concluded that the theme represented “an alternative reality where Barack Obama is a socialist Muslim, global warming is from polar bear farts, Fox News is fair and balanced, and the greatest threat to our way of life in a time of unprecedented economic inequality and institutional advantage for the wealthy is two dudes who want to get married.” Watch video, via Mediaite, below: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/08/30/jon-stewart-rnc-theme-shows-a-party-wide-persecution-complex/
