I honestly dont know if there was much in my background where I saw a tv show, movie or mag and had that "I want that!" Moment. I recognized a couple things later on, after I knew I was a sub. There is one, and I hate to admit to liking the campy Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but one episode where Buffy and Spike are all over each other and dont realize that while they are going at it the whole house crashes down around them...Angry Sex and so consuming that you dont realize whats going on around you. Oh ya....gimmie gimme.
Beyond that when I was in my early 20's I dated a cop who introduced me to handcuffs in fun and interesting ways. I was hooked.... Still my favorite method of bondage.
That and there is something so sexy for me about a man in a uniform. I can blame by officer friends, my eight years in the Army, or just say to hell with it and let it roll....
