Diamond,

I completely understand about your needs to remain incognito. I should clarify this, to me a completed profile has some sort of picture, regardless of what it is. My forum avatar is sadly not me. I'd love to have a latex deer suit. But I still consider it somewhat a part of my psyche, so its enough for other posters to "see my face" online. Or more accurately see past my eyes, if they can.

I'm very visual, so I feel robbed of my favorite sense when I cannot use sight in a conversation. To wit, reading text is an insight of sight. I do a lot of judgment from grammar, but forum and profile picture choices help sharpen the penumbra (great word) of a stranger's enigma.

______________________________________

I'm taking 3 points. +1 for "penumbra", and +2 for rhyming it with "enigma."

even a picture of your favorite sex toy? Anything is better than nothing at all. [/color]

their fav sex toy???? you do realize their fav sex toy is their penis, dont you? Just sayin' [;)] [:D]

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 9:10:52 AM)

What kind of English do you speak over there that penumbra rhymes with enigma?

Other than that I sort of agree with your post. I often recognize regular posters here by their avatar and it takes a bit of getting used to when someone changes it to something very different. I've already 'tagged' them in my mind as going with that particular image.

LadyPact -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 9:16:10 AM)

I've got to disagree with this one. I can't tell you how many times over the years that I've seen people unhappy with the avatar that other people post. Heck, Kana up there had a needle pic up for a while that I personally loved, but others weren't happy to look at it. OP, are you really thrilled with those stupid shots of somebody bent over to show you their asshole?

Come on, man. Put some thought into this stuff.

It's ever so slightly a slant rhyme, both ending with an "ah" sound when I speak. Did it throw you when I changed my avatar?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 10:45:18 AM)

I've had this avi forever, it's how I find my posts when I'm scrolling! It's why I have the purple hibiscus on Fetl!

I shall try to use that word in everyday life when I can. I like sounding smart, lol.

I don't know about you but I have absolutely no interest for people without avatar. Can't you guys put a picture of you from the back, your body only or even a picture of your favorite sex toy? Anything is better than nothing at all.

This post makes me think of the Darwin Awards.

myotherself -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 11:20:53 AM)

Master never had any kind of pic as an avatar. His profile was one sentence long.

We chatted online for months, and when we met we had no idea what each other looked like as we didn't swap pics. Fortunately we were both happy with what we saw...and that was two happy years ago.

So no, I couldn't give a poop if there's no avatar or profile pic.

FMRFGOPGAL -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 11:59:09 AM)

I don't know that an "avatar" as it's being called helps much either. Now, I will freely admit to being a neophite here. But I get a sense these forums are pretty unwelcoming in general. I have a background in goverment studies from a good university and will be entering law school next year. So naturally, I was attracted to the "politics and religion" as well as some of the others. I get the impression that the new people here are treated as "infiltrators" rather than people.
I guess that's an internet in general thing.

Nah, my guess would be it's a people thing.

Like soyleent green, the internet is people.

Dear whiny goddess, I have to admit, I prefer the cute little kittens over actual photos of whiny goddesses.

subreiskyem -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 4:12:27 PM)

Generally I'll talk to anyone who doesn't have a pic up but I find it helps to know more about them if there is one. It doesn't have to be of their face or anything; just something to indicate who they are or what they like. It's far easier for me to remember pictures than usernames on here, you see.

I am only here to make friends so I guess it doesn't matter as much to me what the picture is. I do think people who demand to see pics of you are assholes though, since I didn't have a picture up for a long time due to shyness and no appropriate picture. People who accuse you of being a liar are much worse though.

RemoteUser -> RE: Profiles without avatar. (9/3/2012 6:15:57 PM)

I'd rather be known for my head than my face. If that's a deal breaker, well, whoops, have a nice one.

(Words say more than pictures. Frederick Barnard got it wrong.)

Beware of P&R - the mods once told us 20 / 80 rule applies except even stronger.  20 / 80 rule states that (in this instance) 20 % of the posters make 80 % of the posts.  Stronger?  It's 20 posters - not 20 % that make 80 % of the posts.

Those 20 posters know each other very well and could probably write each others' post - actually they sometimes do. LOL!

P&R is NOT an open forum for exchange of ideas.  As a matter of fact, P&R was separated out of the rest of Off-topic discussion, JUST so those folks could be "Corralled."

So, your observation as to P&R being un-welcoming and you feeling an infiltrator is dead-on.

WELCOME to (the rest of) the forums!
