Mitt Romney’s tax returns are reportedly in the hands of a team of hackers who plan on releasing them publicly at the end of the month unless a ransom is paid.

The group allegedly obtained the files from PricewaterhouseCooper’s Tennessee office on Aug. 25, in what was described on PasteBin as a Mission Impossible-like caper:

Romney’s 1040 tax returns were taken from the PWC office 8/25/2012 by gaining access to the third floor via a gentleman working on the 3rd floor of the building. Once on the 3rd floor, the team moved down the stairs to the 2nd floor and setup shop in an empty office room. During the night, suite 260 was entered, and all available 1040 tax forms for Romney were copied. A package was sent to the PWC on suite 260 with a flash drive containing a copy of the 1040 files, plus copies were sent to the Democratic office in the county and copies were sent to the GOP office in the county at the beginning of the week also containing flash drives with copies of Romney’s tax returns before 2010. A scanned signature image for Mitt Romney from the 1040 forms were scanned and included with the packages, taken from earlier 1040 tax forms gathered and stored on the flash drives.

The files are to be released to the public on Sept. 28, according to the PasteBin document.

The release, however, could allegedly be avoided if Romney’s camp were to wire transfer $1 million in Bitcoins — an online currency that is difficult both to trace and to identify.

http://mashable.com/2012/09/05/hacker-ransom-romney-tax-returns/

Someone claims to have stolen years of Mitt Romney’s tax returns from a Tennessee office of the financial firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Secret Service is investigating what appears to be a ransom scheme.

The local Democratic and Republican parties in Williamson County, Tenn., where the PricewaterhouseCoopers office is located, both received packages, each containing a thumb drive and a letter outlining a competitive-bidding ransom scheme that appears designed to pit Republicans and Democrats against each other over the release of Romney’s taxes.

The letters stated an intention to publish Romney’s tax returns on Sept. 28, unless $1 million is deposited in a Bitcoin (Internet currency) account, according to Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Peter Burr, who said both he and his Williamson County GOP counterpart received similar packages. The letters did not make specific claims as to how many years of tax returns had allegedly been pilfered.

The Secret Service took the package from him after the local GOP contacted authorities, Burr said. The Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that it is investigating the ransom scheme.

The apparent hackers presented “two options,” Burr said. “If somebody wanted to prevent the publication of these tax records, they needed to put a million dollars into this Bitcoin account…that was to prevent them from going ahead and publishing it on September 28th. Then they went on to say that if you want to ensure that this is published before September 28th, you have the option of contributing a million dollars to this other Bitcoin account … and if you win the race … the other side will not be able to prevent the publication.”

PricewaterhouseCoopers acknowledged the scheme, first reported by the tech website Mashable, in a statement to ABC News.

This should be interesting.

I had heard rumors that this was Anonymous... I find that hard to believe.

Are there any descendants of the old Pinkerton Agency still in business?

lol... No clue

Damn, guess so.

Pinkerton Government Services, Inc., founded as the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, usually shortened to the Pinkertons, is a private security guard and detective agency established in the U.S. by Allan Pinkerton in 1850 and currently a subsidiary of Securitas AB

Tax returns are private. I'm sure that the FBI and other federal agencies are on this one.

It could be some branch of anonymous. They are not a contiguous group, and the social engineering used to enter the complex is a pretty common method used to infiltrate places.

But the demanding of money is a bit unlike anonymous. Which is why it could be an offshoot.

What I'm wondering is... what's on them to make it worth $1M?
Most sane people have already assumed there's something damning on it... but damning to the tune of 1 million dollars to either get it early or squash it is quite a bit.

Of course they could just be pressing their luck and hoping someone pays while the information really isn't "that" big of a deal.

Doesnt have to be damning. They want 1 million ... you pay to find out. Is it worth it to Romney or either party to know?

Well it certainly sounds like there is something to ransome. And I certainly don't think it's massive write-offs we've had the media hinting at.
One of the things I can envision is  a clear track record of Romney engaging in bets against the middle class or something worse. I highly doubt that a year or even 4 of paying zero taxes would crweate a big enough flap for Romney's people to demand the attention of the Secret Service.

Hint: They either believe they won't get caught, don't care if they get caught or this whole thing is a hoax.

The interesting thing is that if Romney pays, that'll be proof he is hiding something serious. And if he doesn't, or if the Dems outbid him (which I hope they are smart enough not to touch), then some major dirt comes down. It seems Romney is finally caught up in a no-win situation like the rest of us.

I consider myself a sane person and I dont think there is anything damning in those tax returns..

I think they are doing this on a lark, but they might have broken in/hacked and gotten them (I just dont think there is anything there).. just like there was a story on 1 million Apple IDs having been made public supposedly cuz they hacked the FBI... what parts are true? what parts are lies?

FBI has been hacked before, many companies have. Just look at the massive problem Sony had with hacking not long ago.
And this was a simple building infiltration with physical access. Many places have really horrible physical security. So it's easily possible.

That they stated they had the signatures photocopied from an unreleased return on them is not guaranteed proof, but it's more than just a random e-mail.

And while there may be nothing... Mitt obviously knows if there is something there or not. So he is one of the only ones who can say for sure if this is a bluff to try and get some easy money/attention, or if this is something that really could damage him.

Either way it is interesting, and it puts Mitt in a bad position either way. If they don't get released, many will assume he paid them off or managed to have them arrested before release, and that he had something to hide.

He could preempt it and release the returns himself, but then there is the issue if there IS something to hide. He's potentially in between a rock and a hard place with this, provided the media picks it up and runs wild with it anyways.

Like making HUGE sums of cash on default swaps.

Paying low or no taxes can be sold as "success" by the neo-cons. But big profits from the most destructive scam ever unleashed on the American people is a pretty ugly wreck to try and walk away from.

Doesn't quite matter t this point. I would rather Mitt have released them. His refusal to do so looks suspicious regardless of their content.
They could be really bad, or they could just be not good enough for him to have wanted to deal with during the election.
Either way it is obvious to me that their content is enough of a problem for him to allow it to be used as a talking point for his opposition.

That doesn't mean they are horrific and damning, just inconvenient.

This situation raises more questions however, as it begs the question, "do they really feel this is worth a quick million to Mitt?".

If it really is damaging, I'd rather find out before the election personally. But this way is certainly not how I wish it would be done.
