Is this really how we want to find out though?

Now hold on one second, I said nothing advocating their acts. I offered sound reasons why these people/criminals/et alii may have something  that is actually worthy of a ransom.
That is ALL I said.
I have attached neither any morality nor any robin hood mystique to it.
But I would point out that this kind of threat/rumor/claim has been tossed out on the internet a number of times. The UN-Organization Anonymous has hinted at it several times I think. But now we have the Secret Service called in (presuming the source info is any good), I was a little too busy watching former President Clinton speak to even hit any of my news accounts to research it. Sorry I can't  be more thorough right now, but my Boss will want to see the notes produced, along with the transcript of the speech itself in the morning.Should I find out anything worth adding beyond what I have. I will.

Doesn't quite matter t this point. I would rather Mitt have released them. His refusal to do so looks suspicious regardless of their content.
They could be really bad, or they could just be not good enough for him to have wanted to deal with during the election.
Either way it is obvious to me that their content is enough of a problem for him to allow it to be used as a talking point for his opposition.

That doesn't mean they are horrific and damning, just inconvenient.

Yeah, I don't think he's committed major tax fraud or anything like that, but I think there's something embarrassing/inconvenient in there he doesn't people to know about. I bet it's either he pays practically nothing in federal income tax, or that he's been stiffing the Mormon church (they're supposed to give 10%) and doesn't people to know.

You and Lucy would make a great investigative reporting team. I just hit the 5 news services our dept has accounts on and no ransom story... but check this out (I will be BWOC tomorrow am thanks to you bringing this up):

Looks like Romney/Bain DOES have reasons not to want the taxes examined by the public

FBI has been hacked before, many companies have. Just look at the massive problem Sony had with hacking not long ago.
And this was a simple building infiltration with physical access. Many places have really horrible physical security. So it's easily possible.

That they stated they had the signatures photocopied from an unreleased return on them is not guaranteed proof, but it's more than just a random e-mail.

And while there may be nothing... Mitt obviously knows if there is something there or not. So he is one of the only ones who can say for sure if this is a bluff to try and get some easy money/attention, or if this is something that really could damage him.

Either way it is interesting, and it puts Mitt in a bad position either way. If they don't get released, many will assume he paid them off or managed to have them arrested before release, and that he had something to hide.

He could preempt it and release the returns himself, but then there is the issue if there IS something to hide. He's potentially in between a rock and a hard place with this, provided the media picks it up and runs wild with it anyways.

Sure companies have been hacked.. the FBI denies that they were in this instance and said they dont have the info on Apple IDs.. but again, who knows what is true or not?

Gawker released 950 pages of supposedly confidential audited statements from Bain Capital & something like 20 investor funds.. Price Waterhouse was the auditor.. People pay good and usually big money for their accounting and legal advisors to tell them what is legal and what is not.. and some things are grey until taken to court and proven to be one or the other.. I dont think Romney would deliberately do anything that wasnt legal, tax wise, but again there is always that grey area stuff.. and doesnt the IRS look at the returns and determine if its all legal and tell them they owe more taxes from disallowed deductions or inaccurately allocated income??? Thats their job, I would say..

Or there's the 'grey area stuff' that they all knew was illegal and did anyway. Just during the good old days no one got prosecuted (Reuters link already provided):

"The subpoenas, which were sent out in July, seek documents related to the conversion of fees these private equity firms charge for managing investors' assets into fund investments, the source said. This means the investigation predates the release last month of confidential Bain fund documents by Gawker that revealed such a practice.
The practice is known as a "management fee waiver." As fund investments, the income would be taxed as capital gains, which attract rates around 15 percent. Without the conversion, the fees would be ordinary income, taxed at rates around 35 percent."

you an accountant familar with this stuff then???

Romney left Bain Capital several years ago & there is no mention of what years they are probing.. not quite sure why NY is "probing" when its the IRS that should have been on top of all that years ago, if its illegal and a tax violation.. and from your own link, it states that Romney's campaign "issued a statement denying that he ever profited from using a management fee waiver".. so unless the NY AG can prove he did that, its just another smear/lie by anti-Romneyites... (and dont go saying i am pro-Romney cuz I am not pro either Romeny or Obama).. I just want actual real proof first..

I think it's a hoax, if someone(s) really
pulled it off I think they'd make it all
public. And I'm good with that because
candidates for the presidency should
do full disclosure on their finances.

I absolutely believe there's stuff he
doesn't want public. I doubt it's out
and out tax fraud, I'm sure it's legal
assholery. I think he doesn't want it
made public the years he's paid no
income tax and the years and the
ways he profited ie made out like
a bandit in situations where others
lost their shirts.

What a great excuse to never have to reveal this information, don't you think?

pst... no one is riled. I think most of us have already stated its a hoax. Perhaps reading the whole thread might have helped to clue you in.

I have, perhaps I was referring to the usual suspects who are more than likely tucked into their beds dreaming about the utopia Clinton talked about tonight.

It was a great speech. Both sides have now created their own utopias. The fruits of their efforts will be felt come November.

Mitt Romney’s tax returns are reportedly in the hands of a team of hackers who plan on releasing them publicly at the end of the month unless a ransom is paid.

The group allegedly obtained the files from PricewaterhouseCooper’s Tennessee office on Aug. 25, in what was described on PasteBin as a Mission Impossible-like caper:

Romney’s 1040 tax returns were taken from the PWC office 8/25/2012 by gaining access to the third floor via a gentleman working on the 3rd floor of the building. Once on the 3rd floor, the team moved down the stairs to the 2nd floor and setup shop in an empty office room. During the night, suite 260 was entered, and all available 1040 tax forms for Romney were copied. A package was sent to the PWC on suite 260 with a flash drive containing a copy of the 1040 files, plus copies were sent to the Democratic office in the county and copies were sent to the GOP office in the county at the beginning of the week also containing flash drives with copies of Romney’s tax returns before 2010. A scanned signature image for Mitt Romney from the 1040 forms were scanned and included with the packages, taken from earlier 1040 tax forms gathered and stored on the flash drives.

The files are to be released to the public on Sept. 28, according to the PasteBin document.

The release, however, could allegedly be avoided if Romney’s camp were to wire transfer $1 million in Bitcoins — an online currency that is difficult both to trace and to identify.

http://mashable.com/2012/09/05/hacker-ransom-romney-tax-returns/

Someone claims to have stolen years of Mitt Romney’s tax returns from a Tennessee office of the financial firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Secret Service is investigating what appears to be a ransom scheme.

The local Democratic and Republican parties in Williamson County, Tenn., where the PricewaterhouseCoopers office is located, both received packages, each containing a thumb drive and a letter outlining a competitive-bidding ransom scheme that appears designed to pit Republicans and Democrats against each other over the release of Romney’s taxes.

The letters stated an intention to publish Romney’s tax returns on Sept. 28, unless $1 million is deposited in a Bitcoin (Internet currency) account, according to Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Peter Burr, who said both he and his Williamson County GOP counterpart received similar packages. The letters did not make specific claims as to how many years of tax returns had allegedly been pilfered.

The Secret Service took the package from him after the local GOP contacted authorities, Burr said. The Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that it is investigating the ransom scheme.

The apparent hackers presented “two options,” Burr said. “If somebody wanted to prevent the publication of these tax records, they needed to put a million dollars into this Bitcoin account…that was to prevent them from going ahead and publishing it on September 28th. Then they went on to say that if you want to ensure that this is published before September 28th, you have the option of contributing a million dollars to this other Bitcoin account … and if you win the race … the other side will not be able to prevent the publication.”

PricewaterhouseCoopers acknowledged the scheme, first reported by the tech website Mashable, in a statement to ABC News.

This should be interesting.

I had heard rumors that this was Anonymous... I find that hard to believe.

Sorry, I have bigger plans than that career-wise.

Ummmmm why did the IRS let most of the other Banksters slip by? Why did the SEC?

Or would you like to assert all the dealings of the Wall Street over the last decade were all above board.
This is a New York state inquiry. I think though that taking several months to respond to a subpoena ducas tecum should give one pause.

BTW - What's up with you being so worried about someone being "smeared" and yet you preemptively insinuate I would do anything of the kind to you?

Oh, and Romney only very recently severed financial ties with Bain. He blind trusted his way through a decade of aspiring towards the presidency. Any political scientist who's done one tenth of their required reading knows that.
Playing straw accounts to "look clean" is total crap.
If it wasn't, he's be burying Obama in tax returns.
