Australian politicians don't as a rule, comment on the internal politics of other countries. However, our Treasurer, Wayne Swann made an exception to this rule the other day when he passed a few choice remarks about the GOP's looney Right wing, the Tea Party.

You may like or dislike Swann, but as he is running an economy that is the envy of the Western world, with unbroken growth for the last 20 years or so, presiding over 5% unemployment, kept Australlia free of the negative effects of the Global Financial Crisis, and won the prestigeous Euromoney Magazine Treasurer of the Year award 2 years ago, he might know what he is talking about. Here's what he had to say about the Tea Party:

"Let's be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world's biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over a part of the Republican Party"
"Despite President Obama's goodwill and strong efforts, the national interest was held hostage by the rise of the extreme right Tea Party.wing of the Republican Party. The consequences were grave."

Admittedly Obama should have tried much harder pushing through universal healthcare.

Here in the UK we have the NHS and Mental Health Acts, so generally those that need it get effective medication, competent support workers or are safely locked away in secure institutions so they don't harm themselves or other people.

What we don't do is vote them into political office, allow them to take over a major political party, nor do we indulge them in their delusions of becoming a head of state.

I wonder what ever happened to owning your own mistakes instead of constantly trying to blame the other guy. Maybe I should rethink my vote this time.

I take it you will not be writing in the Michele Bachmann / Michael Savage ticket running under the BatShit Crazy Party?[8|]

Thats all about to change according to Parliament. I dint read it all, so am unsure which part of the ban of people with mental problems standing for office is being altered.
