Toppingfrmbottom -> If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/21/2012 12:34:27 PM)

She doesn't need to pee, we leave the door to the yard open so she can come and go as needed. She's not hungry, she's not thirsty, so those are not a factor as far as I know .

however every once and a while I'll have a nap and be napping for 3 or 4 hours and Calley may will get in my face and start licking my face till I open my eyes, and then she'll start pawing at me exactly like when she was pawing at me to try and shake hands for attention, sometimes accidentally hitting me directly in the face, and if I start to fall back asleep and do not get up or answer her, she barks very loudly once, and then goes back to licking my face and pawing me, today she was whining when I wasn't responding how she was apparently hoping I would.

My theroy is she was worried cause I had been asleep so long and was checking on me, but I don't know for sure.

Any one who knows dogs have any helpful insite?

She wants attention. Basically, if you are home all day, you have ample opportunity to give her attention. She's probably bored.

My guess is, she is paying you back for putting her in that frilly skirt. Karma is a spayed bitch.

She's inappropriately seeking attention in a dominant manner by saying, "My desire to interact with you is more important than your need for sleep, and what I want I get...screw you." It is a undesirable, disrepectful and should be curbed. Make sure her exercise needs are met (most folks underestimate this), and is well-disciplined. Like Cesar Millan says, "Rules, boundaries, and limitations." Unless your body is betraying you when you nap (heart problems, diabetes, etc.), and she's picking up on this and trying to wake you for your own good, she is crossing a boundary by putting her needs before yours. What is your dog's, breed and sexual status?

One more thought...has she any serious medical issues that might be bothering her?

My guess is that she wants you to get your ass up off the sofa and take her for a good 2-4 mile walk. Do it.

After the walk you can both take a nice nap.

Napping for 'several hours' is not a good habit.

She's a big dog that needs attention and activity. Take her out and toss a ball for her to retrieve.

I would guess that she is bored.
I would second what LaTigresse told you.
Being a dog owner comes with responsibilities. One of them is to make sure the dog gets the exercise, physical and mental, that it needs.

She's a 10 year old Goldenretriever, who's not inclined inclined to play or retrieve with toys actually, and she was the vet thinks used to breed till she was no good any more then dumped at the rescues door. She's spayed now and has been for a long time. Nope, no medical issues she was just to the vet and got a clean bill of health! Her file from the adoption place did say though that she was kind of arthritic and would be best for short walks and not marathon walks, and would fit in well with senior citizens who were mildly actiove.

LaTigresse -> RE: If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/21/2012 1:27:47 PM)

Then walk her more.

If I had to venture a guess........ A LOT MORE.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/21/2012 1:30:36 PM)

She refuses to play with toys, i guess she never learned, but she does love "playing" with me, she loves to shake hands when asked and do things I ask, I'll talk to her in a silly sing song voice and ask her stuff and she'll do that butt up head down tail wagging that dogs do when they indicate playfullness, I think it's called a play bow, and she'll roll about the bed and huff, and just generally be a fool. i pet her and ruffle her fur and talk nonsense to her.

Usually when it's been hours and hours it's cause i haven't slept at all or good the night before. Sometimes I am awake from 10 am tuesday and then crash at about 10 am wednesday.

Take a nice fast walk, 1 hour a day, every day.

Both of you will sleep better.

In addition to the take her for a walk advice, which would be JUST AS GOOD FOR YOU as for her. You also might want to check with your doctor and get yourself tested for sleep apnea. Dogs are very good at sensing when something is wrong, your dog may be waking you because your breathing is not quite right or you've stopped breathing alltogether.

Either way, get up and take your dog for walks every day. She needs it, you need it, you'll both be happier.

You know she "can't" do that, LaT. We've been there before.

It is true that puppy mill bitches are often VERY unclear on the concept of things like walking. My late friend adopted a puppy mill bulldog and her daughter is amazed at the comparison between Pen and her own bulldog Georgia. After a lifetime of being crated or kennelled she is not into moving around, because it's not what she understands as natural dog stuff.

Which is not to say that she didn't get a LOT of work from her adoptive humans, and walks on a leash now, though she is not sure what the point of it all is. Part of RESCUE is rehabilitation.

kalikshama -> RE: If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/21/2012 1:41:57 PM)

My mom is 74 years old and takes her 14 year old dog for a 2 mile walk just about every day because they both sleep better when they get this daily exercise. She has more energy throughout the day if she goes for her walk in the morning.

LaTigresse -> RE: If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/21/2012 1:42:11 PM)

Ya huh......

All I know........I would cut off my left tit to have the free time to complain about problems I could solve by getting up off my ass, in my free time. That I don't have.

OsideGirl -> RE: If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/21/2012 1:43:39 PM)

I agree, she's bored and needs activity.

I am glad that my parrot doesn't need to be walked, though he does get me up early for snacks. And he is sad when I nap, though he joins me.

Before we got our Husky, his former owner had kept him tied to a tree in their yard. We had to do a lot of rehabilitation too, but it was well worth it! He was a horror to walk at first, but a pleasure after a few months. R and I were very committed to this.
