That part I actually agree with. Allowing the natural course of conversation to flow has led to some really great threads in the past. This straight and narrow "stick to the topic" cleansing and moderation has stifled some really good topics.

Not only that but the cleansing and stricter moderation has prevented people from adding to threads. If you're not sure about what the guidelines are and if your addition will survive, then you tend to keep things to yourself. The boards have been very slow lately - not a lot of new topics or activity on the topics that are there.

I of course agree with both of you...I still like the idea of no moderation but even a change in policy to allow more thread drift would be welcomed by many and would be easier to petition.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a new forum named” NO MODERATION…enter at your own risk”

Except for a few basic NO NO’s, like children and personal threats or language that would present legal issues, let the conversations and content go where they may…Allow the use of any style of language and allow direct reference to other members.

Could be fun…at least a test to see what would happen.

Butch

Disagree.

It defeats the purpose for an anarchy experiment to have any sort of rules whatsoever. If it's going to be un-moderated, it ought to go the whole hog, none of this "except for a few things I don't like hearing about" nonsense. Any sort of moderation immediately makes a mockery of "No Moderation".

Yes, as long as it were just the one forum. However, if that happened, I would expect to see things rapidly deteriorate into name calling and sand throwing between posters who didn't like each other, until all real discussion was lost.

Jeebus, this ^^^ in spades. The current mod-du-jour 'guidelines' are ambiguous, uneven, arbitrary, vary with the weather and who's playing rock, paper, scissors. Perfectly good threads are vaporized or whitewashed to meaningless shreds. If I wanted to participate in a sanitized discussion board I'd hang out at watch-paint-dry.com or its sister-site, yawn.org.

Still...I'm a guest here. Whoever owns this place can change the rules 75 times a day; their choice. As it stands, it's boring as hell and I am finding many better things to do during my convalescence than trying to figure out whether I can say what's actually on my mind or should robot-speak some Stepford Wife quote like 'welcome, I absolutely love your gaping anus pic, would be thrilled to suck your mighty cock, and would very happily buy you stuff from your amazon wishlist if you would kindly provide your mailing address.'

Collarchat is drying up and dying. Many thanks to the powers that be.

A "no moderation" section isn't going to fix
anything, the over moderation is a issue that's
making using the forum less enjoyable sure...

Hopfully the current state of topics and
discussions isn't permanent, only time will tell.

Well, I gotta say, ya'll might have a point. There was more thread drift in the past, and there was a tightening of guidelines because of all the storms raging in Politics and Religion.

Give me a little bit to re-evaluate the thread drift/off topic subject, and get with the Collarme Team and get their input, and consider the owner's guidelines and ideals, and I will get back to the boards, and make a post. Thank you for your ideas on this. I will make a SEPERATE POST addressing this, so will probably not be back to visit this thread unless problems. But one of my moderators brought this thread to my attention for this specific reason, so give us a bit to mull it over. Thanks for all yalls input!!

Aside: (disclaimer, ONLY MY OPINION) As to the self policing, when I took the helm a couple/few (maybe 2-3 years ago? Thats horrible, the Old Lady cant exactly remember when) I started with the reins much more relaxed. It worked well for a short time, but as time went on the self imposed lines of behavior grew much more faint, and as new users joined and saw the changed behaviors/posting styles morphing, they changed, and so on and so on, and we had to tighten up again. If one forum was set aside that it was there, even if the post was just in that area, poster x would remember that poster y called them something horrible or told them to do something horrible to themselves in that forum and meant it, there might be hard feelings. When poster x posted in another forum that y was posting on also, you cannot believe that would not factor into the other areas posts and color the atmosphere there.

We also cant do board wide because yall would miss us too much !!

ETA: My moderator told me I might be a wee bit unclear on what I (and getting their input) mean I would reevaluate......thread drift..... not the NO MODERATION or an area with NO MODERATION. I cant go without this awesome job after all.....lol...what in the hell would I do with my time? ( That was a joke, there is NO need for a user to tell me what in fact, I can or could do......lol)

The likelyhood that anyone will see this much less in a timely manner before its 100 pages past is NOT!

However there is nothing more laughable than my situation!

I am on moderation for HIJACKING MY OWN FUCKING THREAD!

and the email to the condemning moderator, well look at that;

9/9/12 7:57 PM No

So quit all your fucking whining already.  I just went back to another playground. :)

I can see how things started in such a thread could easily flow over into other areas.

Often time a sidebar so to speak turns out to be more interesting then the original thread and many times more important.

A tangent is good if the original topic has died out, but I think it would be even better to simply¹ have a function to grab several posts into a new thread without the current hassle of having to copy-paste into a new thread post. Basically, a way to fork a thread that has raised tangential points.

Then again, I've often gone off on a tangent without being modded for it.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

¹ I realize this is not a simple modification to make to the board software.

*shrug* I think it's a bad idea.

IME, unmoderated forums ( or even those with a featherlight/essentially non-existent touch of moderation) are the ones that almost always turn into unpalatable sewers that quickly lose users.
