Give me a little bit to re-evaluate the thread drift/off topic subject, and get with the Collarme Team and get their input, and consider the owner's guidelines and ideals, and I will get back to the boards, and make a post. Thank you for your ideas on this. I will make a SEPERATE POST addressing this, so will probably not be back to visit this thread unless problems. But one of my moderators brought this thread to my attention for this specific reason, so give us a bit to mull it over. Thanks for all yalls input!!

Thank you Alpha!

i'm not sure whether i think it's a good idea or not for totally no moderation.

however, i do think that the over modding of topic is treating us like 4yr olds in class. no coversation stays on topic for long in real life. why anyone thinks it should be different online is silly to me. comment could be made about Owners wants, as opposed to Users wants, and whether we have the right to say anything negative seeing as this is a free site. but we all know someone who will come out with the same old crap of 'if you don't like it leave'. however, the huge lull in the forums at the mo speaks volumes about what over moderation does to kill a site.

as site owners we can all have our ideals, but generally people are people no matter what our personal ideals are. i'm an adult ffs and want to be able to chat like one just as i would in real life. i do understand that some people can't do that of course, but the rest of us shouldn't lose out because of the few.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a new forum named” NO MODERATION…enter at your own risk”

Except for a few basic NO NO’s, like children and personal threats or language that would present legal issues, let the conversations and content go where they may…Allow the use of any style of language and allow direct reference to other members.

Could be fun…at least a test to see what would happen.

Butch

I participate on a Ski/Surf forum that has one of these. It's no holds barred, absolutely out of control.
In other words, I love it

Point of fact-I participate in more than a few forums online(none of which are sex related), most of which are pretty wide open and things work fairly well there.
In general, it takes a whole lot to be banned or have a post removed on most forums I take part in.CM is far and away the most restrictive of the forums I've been on.

Am I the only person who thinks the moderation went a lil bit nuts after the fab 4 were discovered to be, well, to not be?

I wonder if the owners felt like they had so much egg on their face, after allowing all the shit that was stirred up during that time, that they went to the other extreme.

Just my thoughts on the subject, that and a few bucks will get ya coffee I reckon.

I thought P&R went unmoderated, except for severe violation, for a little while, is that correct?

IME, unmoderated forums ( or even those with a featherlight/essentially non-existent touch of moderation) are the ones that almost always turn into unpalatable sewers that quickly lose users.

This matches my experiences as well.

Also, moderation arises in the form of a clique effect when there is no other moderation. Self tuning filter, really, where critical mass of a certain clique locks everything in by acting as a nucleation point around which the social structure crystallizes. Such cliques have all the problems of mob dynamics, and thus make an inferior moderation mechanism to what one gets with independent moderation. In short, maintaining an chaotic state requires an active effort because it's an inherently unstable configuration (or maybe metastable).

Fractal physics for anyone that's ever played with a cloud chamber.

You've clearly been spoiled.

I know boards where I have been put on moderation. For an extended period of time. To the best of my recollection, I've had maybe a handful of complaints from the moderators here, and never been put on moderation (though, as I've said elsewhere, my memory isn't what it used to be).

Yes, I think the Arpig debacle was something that influenced moderation here. I'm not sure I'd put it down to egg on the owners faces as much as preventing it from happening again, and protecting the users of the boards. I don't see anything wrong with that. If they haven't found their way with it yet at this juncture, I guess I can understand that and I'm glad that from this thread at least, they seem willing to listen and consider things from our point of view while things get tweaked post-Arpig.

Things to me seem unstable now. I'm not sure everyone is on the same page with understanding what is allowed for posting and why things disappear. Because the moderation seems to be uneven, its contributing to lack of interest by posters. When things start to seem secretive and erratic, people withdraw.

Well my suggestion as far as thread drift and
off topic, just leave it alone and let people use
the forum, unless there's a complaint your just
butting into peoples conversations.

Well, I gotta say, ya'll might have a point. There was more thread drift in the past, and there was a tightening of guidelines because of all the storms raging in Politics and Religion.

Aside: (disclaimer, ONLY MY OPINION) As to the self policing, when I took the helm a couple/few (maybe 2-3 years ago? Thats horrible, the Old Lady cant exactly remember when) I started with the reins much more relaxed. It worked well for a short time, but as time went on the self imposed lines of behavior grew much more faint, and as new users joined and saw the changed behaviors/posting styles morphing, they changed, and so on and so on, and we had to tighten up again. If one forum was set aside that it was there, even if the post was just in that area, poster x would remember that poster y called them something horrible or told them to do something horrible to themselves in that forum and meant it, there might be hard feelings. When poster x posted in another forum that y was posting on also, you cannot believe that would not factor into the other areas posts and color the atmosphere there.

We also cant do board wide because yall would miss us too much !!

ETA: My moderator told me I might be a wee bit unclear on what I (and getting their input) mean I would reevaluate......thread drift..... not the NO MODERATION or an area with NO MODERATION. I cant go without this awesome job after all.....lol...what in the hell would I do with my time? ( That was a joke, there is NO need for a user to tell me what in fact, I can or could do......lol)

Sumpin tells me this thread would degrade to inflammatory within nanoseconds.

Nice concept....bad move.

As an aside, please ask all the Moderators to shave their heads to prove their undivided devotion to me.

No I would never opt for a completely as in 100% unmoderated section.  I have been on boards that do that and it will degenerate into the illegal in no time.

minimal moderation for those who want to avoid certain people on this board who report posts with the hidden agenda of controlling a conversation.

lets have ourselves a nice gloves off holocaust thread or a nice gloves off 911 thread.  These are threads and posts that never see the light of day and ONLY on this board.

Yes and people do notice that mods here allow posters to blame and beat the living fuck out of christians, muslims, catholics and any other religion but damn well better not do the same to jews.  Whats up with that?

On this board people have freedom of sexual expression and not political.

Like others I have more than one playground and the irony is that I have (knock on wood) never been put on moderation on any other board but this one.

Being put on moderation for hijacking my own thread?  Now I heard some deep bullshit before but thats over the top.

I would agree that there should be a "minimally" moderated section for topics of "passion" where you enter dont come crying unless it goes to "pointless...ongoing....off topic...name calling", or something along those lines.

If topics get too argumentative thats where they should get moved.

For those on here that do not want to go there great dont!  You have the right and choice to turn your radio off if your ears or eyes are offended.

Then for the remaining sections if the posts are "distantly applicable", and not to solely to snark at someone or change to discussing the latest laundry detergent in a political thread if they apply even distantly to either the previous line of thought or the op they should be left to fly.

It is so rare that I complain about people gogin off topic in my threads its only if it gets to the point where the minimal moderation point should kick in that I would even consider it.

Meantime several and I might add (certain) others out here complain about off topic to get mods to clear opposing views.  Mods should pay more attention to that and or broaden their understanding of topics or simply ignore these whiners.  I have seen several peoples posts pulled that should not have been but it did clean it up and clear the table of damning opposing views.

Yes on one section with minimal moderation, call it the "No Cry Baby Zone", where HOT topics can be discussed and or participants can beat the fucking hell out of each other!  HUA!

I'm all for no moderation. Like Master, I have participated in forums and even owned a bdsm chat site many years ago where no moderation was in place and it all ran smoothly. If someone didn't have thick enough skin and still wanted to act like a child even though they were adults, then they either left of their own accord because they realized they were too sensitive or were harassed to the point of leaving or everyone just put the person on hide.

I personally feel that if you can't take the heat, stay outta the kitchen. I've always felt that moderation is ridiculous. I'm an adult and if I can't handle myself as an adult then I have no business being online at all.

Yup. Amazing and shocking huh?

This is the only site either vanilla or bdsm, where I was moderated. Around here I admit, it feels like alll the kids out of lunch playing in the playground while the teachers sat close by waiting to break up a fight or picking up someone that got hurt.

This reminds me of a telnet site I used to frequent that needed enforced moderation and didn't have it for years. Probably still doesn't.

In the Reception area, a small clique of Gorean women (slaves) would sit about. These girls would spam the room if they didn't like the public conversation; interrupt conversations; and when new people signed in they would harass them immediately and bully them until they left. For those not familiar with telnet areas, you log in to a 'room' (text-based) where everyone sees everyone else by a list of names, and you see public messages scroll as they are 'said'. There are public and private channels, you can set your preferences to turn them on or off.

This latter action, harassing people immediately upon signing in, always irked me. To properly set up your account, you still had to read 6 solid pages of text to understand and agree to the terms of the site. Then you needed to set your description; edit the channels you wanted to participate in; and generally figure out what you're doing. Trying to do that for the first time while someone is sending you public AND private messages saying, "What a stupid name, why don't you go fucking kill yourself" is too much. At least show enough courtesy to let them get set up before subjecting them to bullshit...

I abhor censorship, so moderation is not something I always agree with. In the context of editing or removing your commentary, I disagree; that said, if the site owner wants to let something as extreme as the above scenario happen, other considerations need to be made. Make sure people know what they are getting into (and in the telnet site's case, set your regulations up better so people can complete their account before participating in anything).

I belong to another site where they do this very thing and I suggested it to Alpha, here.

The other site puts their "Politics & Religion" section into a section called "Rough House". They have warnings about the lack of moderation (so anyone that gets their panties in a bunch can just crawl off and lick their wounds) and it actually goes pretty well.

I think it would reduce the amount of work that the moderation staff has to do and it would make the site more enjoyable for some people.

Yes, I realize that some people would get their little feelings hurt but, I doubt that those people should leave their houses (or come onto an inter-web forum) anyway.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

IMO, moderators should stay out of P&R, unless it gets totally out of hand.

Although I totally agree moderation has been very arbitrary and a bit heavy handed of late, it's like the weather, stick around, it will change.
