Between my time in the Army and the things I've seen as a civilian of things the government consider moral, I doubt there's any way in hell I'd get involved in something it considers morally grey. Especially if it was so "morally grey" they couldn't tell me about what they'd be hiring me to do.

I mean, they hired me once with the honest and considered-moral statement of "we want you to murder people for pay and retirement benefits". What type of job aren't they willing to tell me about?

But not creepy government won't tell you what you'll be doing situations?

There are a lot of things I'll do that the average person would considered in the grey area of morality (and some things they'd be totally against) for the right price. But then, I do a lot of such things for free, too.

I mean, I just put 600 needles into a friend for fun wednesday... My mom thinks it's totally revolting that I do that.

I doubt ANYONE doesn't do some amount of things that are AT LEAST "morally grey" in their lives.

well paying government job = an oxymoron in the first degree!

That's one position that's an urban legend...and my job is considered a public servant government position.

And no, morally gray isn't for me either. If I can't do a job that makes me comfortable with the decisions I make, then I don't want it. And I've been involved in many a life altering incident during the years I've done my job. My gray area in life is very slim indeed......it's usually either black or white as far as I'm concerned. I may not like what I have to do, which is not the same as agreeing with what I have to do, but there are rules there for a reason.

I once accepted a job for a company that organized religious conventions. I quit a week later because I found them "morally gray".

Does that count?

That makes this an even easier question for me. This makes my answer a resounding "HELL NO!"

Often times I have seen people trying to justify or rationalize dishonest or outright illegal behavior and claim it was "for the greater good". With enough time gone by in each case, I have witnessed that it turns out to be just another tidbit of desensitizing people to what truly is right and wrong. I think it's a bullshit excuse and I'll have no part of it.

For me, "the greater good" is when we do what is correct from the outset (presuming we can decipher right from wrong in each individual case).

I'm choosing not to participate in the poll, but rotten situations land on my desk every day, and I'm the guy who has to get them resolved. The right thing to do, is not always, "the right thing to do." The person who sat at my desk before me, quit after one day.

There are times when the decision does come down to how well I want to sleep that night, and sometimes the best rationalization I have at 2:00 a.m. is that I balanced it as best I could.

It's easy, I suppose, for people who've never had a job that involves hard things to be judgemental about the people who can, and do, take on the jobs that have to be done.

Tonight, I think a couple/three margaritas are going to be more than sufficient.

My morals are not everyone elses morals, I wouldnt kill, or bring tragedy to others lives.
I would need much more information beyond that

It would depend on what those morally grey areas are. But if they were against my morals and values, no I would not take the job. I've already been there and done that to the point where my depression hit an all time low.

I wouldn't care how much it paid. I would rather be poor and happy in my morals and values than rich and miserable.

I don't think I would take the job. I suppose it all depends on what your morals are and how they measure up with the "morally grey" area. At the end of the day you do have to live with yourself. If you can live with the consequences of your choices then take the job, if you can't well then you know what to do.

I must just be lucky I work for the government and there is no morally grey area. We have set specific rules, we follow those rules all the time. We stay neutral, present the facts just as they are, and we are good to go. However, my job directly affects others lives on a daily basis.

As a side note because it was mentioned, I think my job is extremely well paying for the industry I'm in. I'd make more probably at a private firm. I would also be working longer, crappy hours. (weekends and holidays) Been there done that absolutely hated it. In addition, my benefits are absolutely amazing and I've never worked at a company that could rival the benefits I have now.

Would you care to expand on that, Pam? Are we talking about deep philosophical questions on the appropriateness of trading one's time for money, or something?

I've made my living in a lot of different ways over the years, and coming home conflicted about moral ambiguity was never an issue when I was running heavy equipment, or selling Halloween party supplies.

First you would need to define what is moral, what isnt moral and what is grey..

I am more about fairness than morality.. seriously, the people that consider themselves moral but shop at Walmart and buy stuff made by people in sweat shops, are they really moral? would they ever see themselves as hypocrites? its pretty amazing how morals go out the window when it comes to people getting something they want or to save a few bucks.. and that goes for govts too.. the state of california had a big steel bridge made in china and shipped over, considering that most labor in china is slave labor (compared to the US), was that moral? It was someones job to decide to either save tax dollars by using china slave labor and cost Americans that work/job or to pay much more tax dollars but support the local workers/economy ($400 million worth).. the state of NY & Alaska do this also..

i would take a job that put me in those kinds of situations- but my moral structure isn't what would be considered 'goody two shoes', either.

I can only speak for jobs that I've held, or heard about first hand.

My mom's a teacher. In the past she was expected to pass the children of school board members who were really flunking. She often disagrees with the curriculum or the teaching methods she is required to use. I wish I knew more of the specifics. I know that she has serious problems with testing.

My dad and sister are lawyers. Enough said.

My sister's a hospital administrator, and she complains about how dangerously understaffed the hospital is. I'm sure there are also some moral issues involving patient care and insurance.

I'm a cook. I've worked in restaurants where the food safety was atrocious. I've been told to serve food that I knew could make someone sick. I've been asked to sign documentation that said I took breaks that I did not take, or shave hours off of my timecard. I've been asked to lie to customers about how fresh the food is. And that's not even going into the areas of organic vs. conventional food, or factory farmed meat. Or, vegetarianism, for that matter, or the fact that much seafood is endangered.

A while ago, there was a thread about some girl working in a drug store who had the dillema of being forced to try to sell customers flu shots when she was ethically opposed to flu shots. (I can't remember what her reason was, some side affect of something.)

I used to think the restaurant industry was uniquely unethical, but now I think most any profession can claim at least a few major ethical dillemas.
