They zap you with a tiny pulse of electricity.

Or were you asking what the non kinky use is for them? Same answer, more or less, but for actual medical reasons.

Oh, TENS unit, duh. Yes, they cause involuntary muscle spasms by the use of electrical impulses. It can feel like a little twitch to feeling like you were punched.

Love to hate them. Tens units and, really, all elctrical toys. what fun. But, if you don't mind my asking, what caused this person to conclude that you would like them? Everyone has differant feelings about every toy. Don't let someone tell you that this, or any other sort of play, is for everyone. You really can't know if you like something till you get a chance to try it. Start with a low setting and build up till you find the point where you like it most.

As the others have said, a tens unit sends out low doses of electricity. In the health field, they help people manage chronic pain, and are also used to stimulate muscle contractions. I've never used one for sexual fun, but you can see where they would send out a dose or pulse of electricity depending on the settings used. Some people love them. I'm not sure I'd invest in one unless I'd tried it somewhere, because being zapped with a low level shock is something that people have mixed feelings about. I don't like it myself. I'm sure you could google the term and find more information.

Lol. I can understand. My Dominant used an electronic bug zapper on me once and I DID NOT LIKE IT. I don't 'like' pain but i do it for him, that zapper was something I really couldn't tolerate at all. Just a personal view on it

I find personally I'm more sexually responsive with a pocket tens unit on my lower back and glutes. I don't know how much oomph a large standing unit like they have in the clinics packs, but the pocket one does not hardly have any at all and runs a little under $100 Canadian.

lizi, an electric bug zapper is exactly the kind of electrical toy I mean! Love to hate them!

I have used a cattle prod - by clicking it, turning it off immedeatly, and then having it touched to me, some in some tender places, but in no primary or secondary sex organs. The discharge of left over electric as it makes contact with the skin is - WOW. Serrious love-hate relationship. On the far side it. But then I even have love-hate with violet wands. The only time I ever just plain loved electricity was when a voilet wand was used with a drummers fan - so many tails diluted the electricity until it was enjoyable. But, then, enjoyment is not always my goal

Yummm, electro. Now we're talking!

Let me pull up one of my journal entries to give you more information:

quote:

You put your tongue on a 9v battery and to most people it feels terrible, so why would you think about putting electricity in even more sensitive places?

Electricity controls nerve function, whether it is from brainwave activity or application of electric current. If something feels good, your body likes what the electricity is doing to your nerves. If something feels bad, just the opposite occurs. So if we know how to harness and apply electricity correctly and skillfully, we can make it feel good or bad.

Without getting too technical, everyone has a favorite base frequency. Some like low frequencies, most prefer the medium range, and a very few like the sensations from high frequencies. So when I custom-program electro to an individual, I run through a lengthy series of base tones until I hear him say ‘ah, this one’s just right! Then I take that base frequency and work my technical magic doing an endless variety of things to make it perform so I am literally programming his responses. He might feel an arousing smooth vibration, a sensual pulsing sensation, a muscle contraction, a pleasant stroking sensation, a hard whack or thump or a ‘lit up’ feeling like a bolt of lightning applied to the skin.

I can put electrodes which carry the sensation anywhere on or in his body (below the waist!) So if he’s a CBT enthusiast and I don’t want to cause any physical harm from manual trauma, I may want to use electro for that purpose. He will feel every bit as though I am striking his balls with a bat or sticking needles in his cock, but the minute I turn the machine off he walks away without a mark, risk of infection, or any physical harm. His butt may be sore from his own muscles contracting to ‘ghost fuck’ himself on a loop of conductive rubber or conductive plug. He may have a bit of temporary tingling along the affected nerve paths but nothing has been damaged. And if he’s a good boy, I program him to feel good…maybe give him something that feels like a vibrator or stroking of a gentle hand.

Electro is also very useful for other things. It can work like acupuncture (and indeed is often used with acupuncture applied to the needles.) It can act as a tonic on flagging libido. It can improve your sexual response. It can do your kegels for you. It can massage a muscle in spasm until it relaxes or soothe painful shooting sensations in a torn meniscus. After a heinous surgery, I restored nerve function by reading up on which frequencies were considered most helpful in these areas and writing a custom program. It contained frequencies that both relieved pain and restored function in the severed pathways. I’m going to guess I recovered about four times faster than if I hadn’t used this regimen.

Now, electro in the wrong hands, i.e. someone inexperienced and untaught is not something to joke about. At best it will scare the fuck out of the recipient in short order. At worst, used above the waist (such as on nipples crossing the chest on the same channel) it can stop your heart. That said, for those of you interested in learning more so you know what the hell you’re doing to yourself and/or your partner there is a great electro website I highly recommend. smartstim.com Free and anonymous.

If you have any questions about the use of electro, I can try to answer. Or you can check out the site above where just about every question in the book has been asked and answered there.

Probably because the nerves that run from the lower back spinal segment goes down through your legs and are in your private areas as well Impulses travel along the nerve highways....

You can look up a myotome chart (or a dermatome chart for skin) for the muscle innervation if you're curious which nerve goes where and how to place the tens effectively.

The clinical units are serious cash, I think the newer ones in our school lab were $15,000 new. I could be wrong. They do ultrasound and biofeedback as well.

The last time I had a tens unit used on me I fucking hated it. I used one after I gave birth after a suggestion by a doctor who said it could help to strengthen vaginal muscles. I used it about a week and said fuck it because it friggin hurt!

Then the ex Dom used one on me and again, it just fuckin hurt. It's definitely not something I ever thought of as fun but some people do seem to enjoy them.

I don't like bug zappers or the violet wand but do love my TENS. Before M bought me this (1/2 price at NELA's Fetish Flea Faire), I'd had my acupuncturist use it for knee pain and a sadist use it to elicit screams.

I like the continuous TENS setting for pain relief and torture and the EMS alternating setting to make me quiver.

It goes up to 8 - I haven't had it over 4.

I get replacement electrodes on Amazon.

Just as a general announcement, tens can't strengthen muscles unless you are using them at the time of the contraction. You have to contract the muscles when you feel the timing of the impulse. We probably all remember the ads of the past where people were hooked with electrodes which contracted muscles and that was supposed to make you into Ahnold. Not so. Research says electrical stimulation can build muscle but only if the muscle is used in tandem with the electricity.

Lol, in class we hooked up the pecs of an extremely muscular male classmate to contract with a clinical strength tens or Estim machine and it was friggin hilarious. We about died laughing because we got the pecs to go back and forth from side to side like a stripper. Killed him when he tried to contract his muscles at the same time, he said felt like he was wrestling with a dinosaur.

In the classroom I had one up to 5, I don't think I could handle anywhere near 8. Fyi, the tens feels differently than an estim treatment. It's more prickly. I don't like any electrical treatment, but lots of people do. I tried to avoid being patient this summer when we had to learn it.

My husband had a knee operation for torn ligaments, with the pins and cast and the whole bit. When he would go to physical therapy, they hooked him up to a commercial tens unit and he would scream and cry in pain. I think it was only the second time I had ever seen him cry. He was in major pain from it. UGH.
