Anti-Islam filmmaker, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, in jail but not for 'Innocence of Muslims' I find this story a little bit troubling, and I'm curious how others who live under the protections of the First Amendment feel about it. Yes. He was arrested for violating the conditions of his sentence on a prior conviction, not for the movie. I get that. I don't like the optics, or the symbolism of it. Put an ankle tracker on the fuck, and watch the monitor real close. I see a message that the United States of America will capitulate our freedom, to pacify ignorant mobs. I get it. I still don't like it.

What I see is that the creep violated his parole, and is going back to jail to finish his sentence he received for crimes committed and adjudged by a jury of his peers. So what's the problem here? [sm=jerry.gif]

No one has a 1st Amendment right to violate the conditions of their probation. No one has a 1st Amendment right to commit fraud, which is how he got sent to prison in the first place. He's an habitual criminal and deserves to be back in jail for violating his parole.

Bail for violating parole? Who is batshit crazy enough to take issue with that? I am sure the sheriff's dept out in cali found a laptop and and internet connection. Staying off the internet was listed as a condition of parole. It's universally set as a condition of any Financial, wire, or postal fraud convict these days along with a host of other criminals perverts, and crud. Oh wait, now understand what the outrage is.about. Never mind.

You and honesty are strangers.....[:D] I`m still not quite sure tho,why cons are so head over heals to protect the "free speech" of criminals..... This is just the latest example...... I`m sure there`ll be more in the future.....

While on parole, this person's activities have resulted in hundreds of deaths worldwide, riots, unrest and a worsening of already fraught relations between the West and Muslim countries. This persons 'work' is implicated in the deaths of 4 American diplomats in Libya. With his background in the Middle East, this person cannot argue that he was unaware of the probable consequences of his actions. There is a strong case to be made that he made his 'film' in the full knowledge of the probable consequences, that these deplorable outcomes were the very outcomes he sought. Though it saddens me to say it, perhaps jail is the best place for him. Why shouldn't he serve out his sentence until he can demonstrate that he has learnt that actions have consequences? Isn't the point of prison to enable minds to be focused on issues like this? While he is learning his lesson, he won't be able to much damage, will he? The world is a far safer place with trouble-making non-entities like him out of circulation.

I support their right to say it. That doesnt mean I have to agree with what they wish to say, nor do I have to accept it. With any freedom comes responsibility. I'm not a US citizen so i litterally don't give a fuck about the philosopical implications of the first amendment but, for god sake, if you are on parole and you break the conditions you go back to jail where you belong. Being on parole is not a right, it's a privilege. And to mantain that privilege you have to meet some conditions. You decide not to meet them? it's your choice, but be ready to go back in jail. Afterall, you've already had a trial and you were convicted so there is no doubt you deserve to be there. It works like that in every country that has parole-like system. he got lucky enough to live in a place where they have that...i don't think he would be allowed that kind of privilege let's say...uhm...in Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan or North Korea (just to name a non arab country)? End of the story

Just as we should not allow a bunch of violent fanatics to scare us into self censorship, we should also not let them scare us into trepidation when applying our laws in other areas just because we are afraid of how it will look. As the old saying goes, we should keep calm and carry on... and to hell with what the violent fanatics think about it.

If I beleived that he would have been arrested for violation if he hadn't made the film, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But I don't. Either we have freedom of speech or we don't. We can't ignore it when it fits our agenda. I am also not a bit surprised to see the usual trolls trying to turn this into a right vs left bullshit fest. It must really suck to live with all that hate spewing out.

I would think he violated his parole by posting the film, because part of his parole was no internet access. Sorta makes the film part of the issue just by having posted it. From the OP Following his conviction, for which he served one year in federal prison, Mr. Nakoula had been ordered not to use an alias or access the Internet without the permission of his probation officer.

Freedom of speech doesn`t absolve someone from the consequences it causes. This is the moral equivalent of pouring gasoline of a fire,after knowing people will be harmed by it. A felon, who committed credit card fraud, who then got caught violating his probation because he brought attention to himself after he made a film calling a holy profit a pedophile, is getting allll this support and sympathy from our righties, like boi...... You may think it`s funny or a good time but it`s putting Americans in danger. The worst most disgusting part of this abuse our our 1st Amendment is how you righties are promoting and defending this film and then blaming what happens on the president. Just fuck`n shameful.
