my faves: lube (wated-based AND oil-based), rope (the perfectionist in me loves making a pretty design), the cool four-point bondage system that fits under any bed, clothespins, arm/leg cuffs, strap-on harness, various sized dildos, and my good ol' leather belt.

There is some really good advice in this thread. I'm also not into rope work at all (it can look very cool, but I simply don't have the patience or interest) so basic, simple, padded wrist/ankle cuffs are super useful and effective, not to mention not super expensive.

The one other thing I'd say is I think there is a great balance to be struck between having your own toys/equipment as a great sign that you're serious about this and not expecting her to pick up the tab for your fun, and showing up with a set of gear that kind of tries to force someone into playing a certain role/scene/vibe if that makes any sense. In other words, if you don't know that somebody is into pony play and/or they didn't request you bring it, and you show up with a full out suit/harness/reins etc and nothing else it can start to feel very pushy. Some of that can be avoided by communication of course, but until you know what you BOTH are into it's kind of tough to get a lot of personal taste specific gear if you start to really narrow your list of purchases. Just an additional thought :)

I love it when a bottom/sub has his own well-stocked toy bag. When you play with casual partners, looking at each other's toy bags is a great ice-breaker. My expertise with rope doesn't extend to rigging or fancy ties. So I would agree the the comfortable, sturdy wrist and ankle cuffs are super. Studying how to cut, make clean ends on the rope and types/thicknesses of rope would help you select a great supply of rope.

Buying a pair of paramedic scissors is a good idea too. I was at a party recently where only two of us dommes had scissors even though the planned event was a plastic wrap party. I guess not everyone plans ahead. Safety scissors are a must for a toy bag. No one ever seems to think of clean towels, I find them so handy. I think a guy with his own towels, and few bottles of various foot lotions would be a huge hit for those endless offers of the foot massage. I also like nipple clamps, cbt toys, comdoms, butt plugs, dildos, plenty of lube. There are all thoughtful items to have on hand. So is a collection of paddles, canes or a good flogger if you are into impact play. From a safety/hygiene standpoint, bringing your own stuff is a very good idea. KNowing a sub has happy memories from his/her equipment, makes me rather eager to use his tools, espcially when I am playing for a first time, it's a good way to gauge his/her pain thresholds because I am working with something they are used to already. I use a few favorites of my own for balance of course.
