Over-all moderation could have been better. I was sad to miss a pod and I think ol' Jim is getting a little long in the tooth - over all grade of the debate = C-

I thought the moderator was excellent. Not only did he ask the candidates the exact same questions but he let them go at it. I think it's the best presidential debate I have ever seen going back to Carter / Reagan.

slvemike4u -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/3/2012 9:08:22 PM)

I'll watch it tomorrow, final day if the 2012 baseball season took precedence.
What I have heard though, and it was repeated here, was that the President came off as "flat".
I'll see for myself tomorrow.

One hour into the debate, I would say Romney has done exceptionally well and Obama has underperformed.

I'd say that held true, through the last half hour as well.

Back in my starving student days, I used to judge high-school debates at weekend tournaments. I always gave a score to the non-verbals of whoever wasn't speaking. The President would not have done well, on the margin of my flowsheet.

Can somnone tell me when Romney joined the Occupy Movement????
WTF
Okay so the deal is now blow off the base and revise everything he's said over two years.
Got it.

And please, let me compliment you on inventing "facial metrics". It is shameful that Ekman and Friesen, Fredrickson, and Larsen stole this science from you.

FMRFGOPGAL -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/3/2012 9:14:48 PM)

I agree with Lucy, Jim Leher is not and never really has been a debate moderator of any signicance.
I say make Keith Urban the bext moderator. If you caught the "debate between Mariah Carey and Nikki Menage recently, you'll get it.

What the fuck are you talking about, F? When I flow debates, I score non-verbals. Other judges only went point by point exclusively, or had their own key things to add/deduct on. Is there some sort of problem with that?

Don't attack me, because your guy didn't have a game to bring.

I liked the free flow of the format, and if we lost a pod, so what. Clear distinctions were being drawn for 90 minutes. I hate rigid controls on conversation, and answers getting cut off, in more tightly controlled structures.

I just tuned in to MSNBC. Chris Mathews is in meltdown mode. He can't believe how bad Obama looked in this debate, and how Romney controlled it.

I don't know if this is the same segment you saw, Serv, but it is a nice nightcap.

Chris Matthews Freaks Out At Obama After Debate: Romney Was "Winning"

Basically Romney insisted on getting the last word on every question and Lehrer let him.

I'm surprised the cons are so happy though, Romney threw away every position dear to them. He walked away from any cap gains tax cut, privatizing SS, any change to Medicare (no one will choose a private plan with standard Medicare available), all the various Pentagon budget increases and new wars. He even talked positively about Romneycare and couldn't name any substantive part of obamacare he would replace. I guess you're hoping he'll shake the etch o sketch again if he wins?

Owner59 -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/3/2012 10:58:42 PM)

The President also hasn`t debated in 4 years and I think he didn`t want to savage Mitt in the 1st round, on purpose.

When Mitt started out during the primaries....he didn`t do well until after stealing Bachmann`s debate coach. After that, he got much better.

If one is a con.....Mittens calling the President a liar is a feel good moment. But the general public doesn`t regard the President as dis-honest so it`s just jibber-jabber.

And after a little examination over the next few days, folks will see that it was Mittens[:D]............... who was more like his fibbing five sons.

I hear a lot of "final " and "last reboot" comments, coming from the cons......lol.

Considering he just flipped on the DREAM act yesterday......there`ll be quite a few more "reboots"...... before this is over.

Look on the bright side, Owner59. He upped his chances of keeping the promise to his wife that they'll have a much more private anniversary together, next year. [:D]

Well, I had to think about that and try to break down what, exactly, he did that would appeal so much because I was just kind of 'bleh' about the content: so, he threw PBS under the bus which will appeal to anti-intellectuals, made a strong pro-military stance so caught gun and military folks, brought God into the equation a couple of times (stumbled a bit on that one, I think but he knew it then promptly ignored it.. still, it was probably just enough for people to remember he said God, but not, exactly 'what' he said about God), so keep Christians really happy (they got mentioned by name!!) and are folks going to know the prez is supposed to defend the Constitution and not the DOI in the first place?

Romney spoke Founders (appeals to his base) and Obama spoke Lincoln (appeals to his base) - I think I was too harsh on my assessment of Obama now that I think about it. When I looked at him, I really still do see president.. just a very tired president. Obama still comes across as very serious to me while Romeny seems.. less so.

Of course not.

That's been the plan all along. Didn't you hear the R's just about a week or so ago saying they were going to do a reset?

When it's over, they'll reset again either with Romney in office (so he can get re-elected as the incumbant while doing all sorts of fun stuff for his base for four years) or they'll be denouncing Romney as a RINO/Socialist (probably blame him for Obamacare.. lol) so they can have one of their stars run next time once the lame duck is over.

I've been thinking "reboot," for four years, Owner59. After tonight's performance, a lot more people may be thinking along that line as well. [:D]

Owner59 -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/3/2012 11:34:06 PM)

Get used to it cuz you`re get`n another four.....lol.

Oh right......the game has changed and Mitt is no longer a jack-ass........[:D]

SternSkipper -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/4/2012 12:39:16 AM)

I wonder.what his base feels about his registering as a democrat tonight? And after all that BS. Does that mean HE'S voting for Obama ? Cause he's changed his story wildly this time around. I smell one big ass focus group.

Yachtie -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/4/2012 4:43:07 AM)

Lets be real, Carville said. “They have run a very good campaign thus far. I don’t think that President Obama did what this campaign wanted him to do. I think he was off his game tonight. But let’s don’t go overboard here. It will be like a big sort of pushback. … My point is this — President Obama came in, he wanted to have a conversation. It takes two people to have a conversation. Mitt Romney came in with a chainsaw. He’s trying to talk to a chainsaw.”

DomYngBlk -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/4/2012 4:43:19 AM)

Romney spent his whole time repeating the same lies he always repeats. Trying to dominate a conversation with words that have no basis in reality isn't winning a debate. I would thought people that a regularly here would be able to discern the difference. Obviously, I was wrong.

xBullx -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/4/2012 5:07:28 AM)

-fr-

I think I called this one before the election.

Not about the debate results, but rather the reaction of the experts, and the blind followers from both sides. I went from channel to channel last night and evaluated responses. As we traveled deeper into the night and the "pundits" had time and were able to construct their "new" talking points they fell lock step in line once again talking smack and spin.

This debate wasn't for you folks here or the die-hard folks at righty sites. It was for those wanting to evaluate these two men based on their responses, their actions..... No fluff, no prompters, no back room tapes, no TV commercial semantics; just two men left to their own devices, standing in front of us all.

I liked this debate format; though I'll give you it needs a bit of a tweak here and there. All in all it showed us a good deal more about these two men than anyone here or on the righty sites will care to admit.

I just thought that our performance evaluation of both men would be harder to define. Clearly one side is making excuses and the other is claiming a route.

Also it is amazing the comments that came from the Twitter World. I wonder today how many of the hard lefties I seen trashing their man last night will claim their account was hacked...

Best moment: When Romney brought out his ready made line, and called the President on the bold-faced bullshit, by talking about teenage boys, trying to sell stupid lies to their parents. Fucking beautiful.

Not only did he state that Obama was lying, but he also implied that he was being childish. IMO, that was the most impacting part.

I thought Romney crushed in this debate. I wonder if Mitt's joke right at the beginning (this is the most romantic place you could have celebrated...with me) threw the President off his game. I had a little back and forth with one of my cousins that is a huge fan of Obama. She stated that he's usually not aggressive in a debate outside of those with Hillary. That was in response to my comment that I was shocked to see how poorly he did.

I vote John Kerry to ready the Pres. for the next debate, too. [:D]

To address something that was brought up here and by Chris Mathews... both candidates talked over Jim Lehrer. Lehrer didn't let the candidates spar, he had no choice. We lost a pod, but the overall debate was excellent (especially since Romney seemed the more passionate candidate and didn't look out of place on the stage). For the next moderator, I cast my vote for Netanyahu. [:D]

DomYngBlk -> RE: Grade the Debate (10/4/2012 5:24:04 AM)

Way romney's eyes bugged out and the speed of his speaking. he was on some kinda shit.
