I think the simian tag was something that was invented specifically to put a gap between the human race and the rest of the great apes.

Fwiw, Merriam-Webster (scroll down to the noun definition) and Wikipedia do include humans as simians.

Actually, "simian" is from the Latin word that means "ape". It's not a modern construct as in "invented during the Scopes Monkee trial". On the bottom of the page is the etymology of the word. Latin's been a dead language for quite a while so, it's doubtful that the word has changed much. The Wiki Page on "Humans" shows the Human Zoological tree as: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Synapsida Class: Mammalia Order: Primates Family: Hominidae Tribe: Hominini Genus: Homo Species: Homo sapiens The Wiki on Apes gives: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Primates Suborder: Haplorrhini Infraorder: Simiiformes Parvorder: Catarrhini Superfamily: Hominoidea So, apparently, even modern scientists don't think humans are very simian. The last thing we share in common with apes would be our "order" (primates). I don't know that I would classify Biden's condescending, "I'm-a-better-human-being-than-you" smirk as "simian" but, I think he certainly wanted to give the impression that he was a different "breed" (presumably of person) than Mr. Ryan. The "holier-than-thou" attitude is pervasive in quite a few politicians and Biden is well-practiced, obviously. Peace and comfort, Michael

If I'm reading this Smithsonian taxonomy right, it seems to include Hominoidea (the superfamily that includes Homo sapiens) within the infraorder of Simiiformes.

Looks like I was mistaken about the taxonomical usage (simian is a more recent classification than anthropoid, but doesn't seem to have been adopted for the reason I thought), but I'd question Latin's deadness in the sense you mean. It's no longer widely spoken, but the meanings in taxonomy and other scientific classification systems are frequently revised, replaced or added to, and with the Pope's encyclicals being translated into Latin for the Vatican archives, there's been quite a few years where there have been more neologisms in Latin than in ostensibly still living but completely ossified languages like French.
