Stella, I saw it as entertaining and I'll tell you why.
4 years undergrad and 3 years grad school here. I met a lot of folks during those years and there were several majors that I would look at thinking "Why the fuck are they here"?
I understand someone wanting to better themselves intellectually and artistically but you must go into it with your eyes open. Before you declare a major, THINK. What will I do in 4 years?
There is nothing wrong with art or sociology or philosophy (Actually, a philosophy major might be really good for pre law)
One must have plans. General Studies as a major? Hellooooooooooooooo. Education is expensive. You need to have an idea that you are going to get a return on your investment.
What jobs require an art major? Can you do the same with an art minor? "I want to own my own gallery" OK, fine. Business major (so you'll know what the fuck you're doing and your business doesn't fail" and an art minor. If that gallery thing doesnt work out, you still have a means to make a decent living.
Im not saying universities shouldn't offer these majors and they aren't worthwhile but go in with your eyes open.
Unemployment for college grads is 6.62% according to this. http://www.studentsreview.com/unemployment_by_major.php3
Unemployment for art majors is 12.7%. That's higher than the general population.

In fairness, NPR is pretty lefty. Admittedly moreso when DEMs are in the Whitehouse but they're usually pretty left and they're on terrestrial radio.

Apparently, you don't agree with the idea that you go to college to learn stuff so that you can either start your own business, or provide a benefit to someone else's business. Plus, if this kid is expecting to be given a job simply because he graduated, lemme tell you something... ain't gonna happen.

How a President is supposed to help a kid feel safe that there will be a job waiting for him, I don't know.
