Carl's Jr exspecially has nice large cups, so I like to wash them out and reuse them. Since they're probably meant as a one use n toss cup, is there anything to worry about with refusing them and sonics styrafoam cups?

It's risky to put anything above average room temperature in those things. High heat will damage the integrity of the materials and cause the materials to break down into potentially harmful chemicals bleeding into whatever you are serving in them. If they start to taste or smell plasticy or leave a waxy/oily residue on the surface of whatever's in them, ditch them and don't consume what was in them.

Yeah. I'm just using them for cold drinks. Maybe ice in the cold drink. Id never pour hot drinks in plastics.

Oh that's fine until they start to break down over time then. Just watch for the residue thing.

Honestly, the only thing you should be drinking in jumbo sized cups is water.

Hi TFB

Do not reuse styro foam--it's more porous than plastic and has a tendency to allow bacteria to hide much easier--toss 'em--or better, if you can recycle them. For plastic cups, you can re-use them--plenty do--but typically the ones to reuse and the more sturdy, heavier plastic ones, such as "novelty" cups. The heavier plastics can be run thru the dishwasher on the top drawer (avoid hot cycles--they'll melt)

Over time, they will break down, so don't get too attached. Wash them after use with warm water and dish soap. Quite honestly, you're much better off with glass or a commercial plastic cup/tumbler.... and as your friend TFB--watch the quantities of those sodas.

I'm a soda-holic myself--Diet sodas (my evil choice) are high in sodium & those artificial sweeteners really aren't good for anyone. Regular sodas are absolutely linked to obesity--empty calories & way too much sugar.

Haus my weakness is lemonaid light or ice tea. Sodas are a very rare treat. Of course the lemonaids not so good for ya either!!!

Yeah, one is better off with non disposable cups and tumblers. I keep an eye out for ones I like when we go outs for groceries.

I'm pretty sure reusing them for cold drinks is fine. Just don't to put gasoline in them. Trust me on that one.

Have you tried mineral water? It's the carbonation not the taste that appeals to a lot of people about pop, I've noticed.

Yup. I drink low sodium club soda over ice. I drink one diet coke a day and the club soda takes care of the desire for anything else.

Put a wedge of lemon, or lime in it, or mix in a little cinnamon or allspice.....real juice can be drank occasionally between the waters.

I drink a lot of mineral water for the very reason you mentioned, Moonhead. I find that it is more than sufficient replacement for soda and no calories. It also has other health benefits such as lowering cholesterol.

Cool. I just wondered if hausboy had tried that one as he's having trouble cutting down on the diet pop? It sounds like that one has worked for littlewonder, after all...

(I didn't know it dropped cholesterol, though: do you know how that one works, lw?)

Fill it to the top with ice, that reduces how much soda you drink. Diet Coke with Lime is the best. But I don't drink it after 4:00 PM. Diet tonic water is a nice alternative, it has some of that acidic bite that makes Coke so awesome.

breastcancer.org advises against using Styrofoam around any type of food or drink. I can taste it, blech. Haven't had a drink in a Styrofoam cup in 12 years. When I'm mobile, I use an LL Bean stainless steel Thermos for hot drinks and glass jars for cold.

http://community.breastcancer.org/livegreen/plastics-choose-what-to-use/

Plastic containers are incredibly convenient and nearly impossible to give up entirely. But the chemicals in plastics can get into our food and drinks and affect our health and our environment. So, it makes sense to think about how to cut back on using plastic and find other kinds of containers. It also makes sense to think about the types of plastic you use, especially for food.

The recycling numbers in triangles on the bottom of bottles and other plastics can help you make the safest choices. The numbers tell you what type of plastic the product is. No matter what type of plastic it is, don’t heat plastics or let them heat up in the sun. Don’t use plastic in the microwave even if it says “microwave safe,” and don’t use plastic roasting bags in the oven. Never reuse them if they’re cracked or scratched. And always try to recycle any plastics you do use. Check with your local recycling office to see which plastics are accepted in your area.

Here’s the scoop on what those numbers mean:

...Recycling symbol 6: Don’t use. Recycling symbol 6 is polystyrene. Polystyrene includes foam plates, cups, and bowls, as well as Styrofoam packing materials, trays, and egg cartons. Try to minimize using number 6 plastics around any type of food or drink.

It seems it has to do with the fact that mineral water is sodium rich.
