Well perhaps the right is not aware of it yet because the story has not made it to Faux News yet, just like the Akin story..

"Silence seems to be Fox’s favored tactic for dealing with stories that may be unpalatable for conservatives. When Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) made his highly-covered blunder, claiming that women could not get pregnant from “legitimate rape,” Fox barely mentioned his name. Though Fox may continue to ignore these controversies, stories of Republican candidates’ extreme positions on abortion and contraception are becoming all too common in the news cycle."

twisting a poorly worded statement

Dear everyone asking what it is about Republican candidates and their clumsy talk about rape: This is a feature, not a bug.

The latest entrant into the Republican rape insensitivity bake-off is Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, who said tonight that “even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” He, of course, joins fellow Senate candidate Todd Akin, with his now-canonical “legitimate rape” comment, and Rep. Joe Walsh, running for election in Illinois, who claimed there was no reason a woman would ever need an abortion to save her life or preserve her health. The trailblazer was Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle, who failed to unseat Harry Reid in Nevada two years ago, and famously said that if a hypothetical teenager was raped and impregnated by her father, it was an opportunity to turn “a lemon situation into lemonade.”

Here’s why this is happening: The newer crop of Republican candidates and elected officials are, more often than not, straight from the base. They’re less polished than their predecessors; they’re more ideologically pure. As a result, they’ve accidentally been letting the mask slip and showing what’s really at the core of the right-to-life movement.

For years, the movement has fought plausible charges that it is anti-woman by repackaging its abortion restrictions, in Orwellian fashion, as protections for women. They’ve done it so successfully that until recently, when so many alleged “gaffes” went viral, no one really noticed.

Surely this man isn't going to be elected anyway....

If this fellow is elected, what does that say about Senator Claire McCaskill?

McCaskill is running against Akin. Mourdock is from Indiana...

That being said Give me a fucking BREAK. STOP MAKING ISSUES OUT OF NOTHING!

He fucking said God must have wanted the baby to be born and was talking about life begins at conception! You fucking progressives and your stupid petitions.

quote:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Wednesday that he is standing by his statement that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended." He says some people have twisted the meaning of his comment.

Mourdock said in a news conference that he abhors any sexual violence and regrets it if his comment during a debate Tuesday night left another impression. He said he firmly believes all life is precious and that he abhors violence of any kind.

"I spoke from my heart. And speaking from my heart, speaking from the deepest level of my faith, I would not apologize. I would be less than faithful if I said anything other than life is precious, I believe it's a gift from god," Mourdock said

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and other Republicans have distanced themselves from Mourdock's stance.

Mourdock, who has been locked in one of the country's most expensive and closely watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of a debate Tuesday night whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

Mourdock maintained at the news conference that he was misunderstood.

"I think that God can see beauty in every life," Mourdock said. "Certainly, I did not intend to suggest that God wants rape, that God pushes people to rape, that God wants to support or condone evil in any way."

You realize that statement would have a lot of folk calling you a "Liberal" don't you?

Hill, back before "Liberal" came to be synonymous with "Democrat", I wore the title proudly. It means a free-thinker; unencumbered by blind allegiance to an ideology.

My step dad was a Teamster for 42 years. I care about employee rights. I was one of the youngest shop stewards ever in the Local 560 (I was 20). I have the pedigree. Sometimes I agreed with the union and sometimes I agreed with management. It depended upon the situation.

I'll tell a couple of (hopefully quick) side stories ...

There was a guy that worked at one of our locations. He'd been on the job for about three years. He was conscientious, well-groomed, hard-working and a pot head. I don't agree with the use of drugs. The company wanted to nail this guy to a wall and every time they said they wanted to test him, I fought them, tooth and nail.

There was another guy, at a different location who worked steady midnights and was in a job where he could (technically) say: "If the machines are running, I am working." and be correct. He worked with that attitude, frequently. He was also well-groomed and conscientious (in his own way. When he was needed, the guy's work was spot-on). He got drunk one night on the job. Management went after him and I didn't stand in their way. I did what I was supposed to do as a shop steward but I wasn't about to hang on to someone - based strictly upon seniority - who risked injury to himself and others by acting in a stupid manner.

So ... employee rights? Yes. Allowing dead weight to drag the rest of us to ruin? Hell nah!

I'll tell you this, as I have said on here, before; on certain issues, I am very liberal. I desperately wanted someone to vote for besides the choices that we've been offered in the previous two POTUS elections but I'll never write in a vote, again.

And this thread is about people deciding that a malaprompt is a good reason to take someone outside and shoot 'em down like a dog because hangin's too good for 'em and it just doesn't stand up to good, balanced logic but then, the interwebs isn't exactly the medium for that.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

No part of rape is "a gift from God."

Last night a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate claimed that raped women should be forced to carry their rapist's baby to term because their pregnancy -- a result of rape -- is a "gift from God."1

Tell Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock: Rape is a heinous act of violence, and no politician should tell women that any part of being raped is a gift from God.

Richard Mourdock is a Tea Party Republican who defeated incumbent Republican Senator Richard Lugar in a surprise upset in Indiana's primary election for U.S. Senate. He is currently in a dead heat with the Democratic challenger -- the latest polls are within the margin of error.2

If enough of us speak out we can turn Mourdock's remark into a "Todd Akin" moment and ensure that Indiana and the rest of the nation learns just how extreme he is when it comes to women.

Mourdock's exact words -- in the debate with his Democratic opponent -- were:

I struggled with myself for a long time but I came to realize life is that gift from God, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape. It is something that God intended to happen.

Tell Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock: Rape is a heinous act of violence, and no politician should tell women that any part of being raped is a gift from God.

Mourdock is a staunch believer that abortion should be illegal even for victims of rape and incest. But even for an anti-abortion Tea Party Republican claiming that any part of of being raped is for the woman a "gift from God" is appalling.

Make no mistake: Tea Party Republicans like Mourdock will stop at nothing to send women back to the Stone Age. And if he wins election in Indiana, he will put Republicans one seat closer to control of the Senate. And that could mean that extreme anti-woman legislation passed readily in the House -- defunding Planned Parenthood, redefining rape, blocking access to birth control -- would now have a shot at passing the Senate.

Rape is rape. And it is not acceptable for a Republican politician campaigning for one of the highest offices in our government to tell women that if they get pregnant as a result of rape, that it's a "gift from God."

The Democrat in this race is Joe Donnelly. He is also against women's rights, so you might want to think twice about throwing any support in his direction. The ONLY pro-choice candidate for Dick Lugar's former seat in the US Senate is the Libertarian candidate, Andrew Horning. Not many have heard of him, since he offers no favors to the corporations who have donated MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to the other two bozos.
