dcnovice -> A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/24/2012 6:17:45 PM)

I found this incredibly moving. Others may too.

quote:

Come on Ms. Coulter, you aren’t dumb and you aren’t shallow. So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?

I’m a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public’s perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow. I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.

. . .

After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.

Complete letter at Special Olympics blog

Bias alert: I have a goddaughter with severe cerebral palsy.

scum masquerading as a human, theres a lot of it about unfortunately

cloudboy -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/24/2012 8:22:46 PM)

I'm skeptical of the letter's authenticity. It read to me like a normal person writing as someone who is mentally disabled. My brother was mentally handicapped and I have associated with many others having grown up with him. I don't see someone writing to Ann Coulter in the fashion of the letter circulating on the internet.

Has there been any confirmation of the author.

tazzygirl -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/24/2012 8:24:13 PM)

Considering its on the Special Olympics web site... Im not inclined to doubt the authenticity.

Here is another he wrote in 2008.

Well, his letter was published under the auspices of the Special Olympics folks, and the story has been picked up by an number out outlets. He's also been published in the Denver Post.

I'm not sure what you mean by "authentication."

This person is quite remarkable. Thank you for providing more background.

Aswad -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/24/2012 10:10:09 PM)

It happens.

Someone with common Down's will have between half and two thirds the intellectual capacity they otherwise would, meaning that at age 27, the adult peak of development, they have a capacity equivalent to an adolescent. It decays somewhat faster for them than for the rest of us from that age onward, meaning it is exceedingly rare for someone with common Down's to ever reach adulthood intellectually.

Someone with the uncommon variant, where only half the cells are trisomal, may have up to their normal intelligence level at most, though it isn't unusual for even those to be slower than a neurotypical individual with the same intelligence level (speed and capacity are crucially not the same), IME. Thus, we do have a sort of high functioning category of Down's people, where unfortunately a number are just smart enough to grasp the extent of their disability, which a lot of the regular Down's people do not, again IME.

This guy is what happens when the next Einstein gets saddled with Down's.

Kind of sad, really, to think of what he might have been.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

I personally think anyone who listens to Ann Coulter needs to have their head examined, she is only attempting to shill her books and needs to keep saying, tweeting crap so Fox news will have her on air.

dcnovice -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/25/2012 5:45:24 AM)

My theory is that Coulter provides a sort of wish fulfillment for her followers, saying aloud what they think but dare not utter in polite society.

ElChupa -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/25/2012 5:53:09 AM)

Ann is great. She's abrasive for sure, but hell so is everybody on MSNBC. She's certainly got more balls than any leftist. Chris Matthews? Ole tingle leg himself? Is he a man? Rachel Maddow? Well, she might be a man. That would explain a lot actually. Joe Biden? Mad cow disease for sure. Leftists? Hell, just laugh at them and defeat them. They lie and cheat... it's who they are.

Mezrem -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/25/2012 6:04:53 AM)

You know insulting other people does not mitigate or lessen the impact of Coulter's choice of words. You offering up an attack on other news figures only weakens the stance that we should expect more from these people.

Then again, some folks may not need Coulter to sling mud on their behalf.

I was wondering about the origin of your previous claim that "Delusion is probably a good term to use for leftists. Or mental illness."

Now, after noting your gender confusion and your new claim that Biden has mad cow disease "for sure", I'm guessing that your expertise on delusion is based on decades of intimate familiarity arising out of personal experience.

Every time I read something about Ann Coulter's latest foray into ignorance and cruelty I always have the same thought... where the hell are the Gorean slave ships when you really need them?!

(Gor is a very conservative world and Ann is a very conservative woman, so the two of them should get along just swimmingly)

DomYngBlk -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/25/2012 6:37:12 AM)

Coulter is just mad cause she is so fucking ugly

Hillwilliam -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/25/2012 6:41:58 AM)

Know what's intersting about Far Right posters and media personalities?

They attribute being "whiny" and "professional victims" to those left of center but they tend to be the whiniest bitches on here and in the media.

FR

I'm not a big fan of Ann Coulter (just as I'm not a fan of Rush). This being said, I find it a bit hypocritical for people who are pro-choice and for killing Down's Syndrome and other developmentally disabled children in utero and then choose to find offense in the word "retarded".

Got one in the garage.

Can I shave her and glue a gag hood to her head?

Cuz I don't see her getting picked up any other way, 'cept as sleen chowder.

tazzygirl -> RE: A "Retard" Answers Ann Coulter (10/25/2012 6:46:15 AM)

I dont. Pro-choice means just that. It would not be my choice, but other women should have the right to that choice.

Is that really so hard for you to figure out?

So can I be pro-choice about slavery? After all, if I want to make someone my slave (whether or not they want to be one) shouldn't that be my choice? Slavery was legal at one time too.

They are both human lives. It isn't JUST the woman involved in abortion, so no, she shouldn't have the right to kill someone just because she doesn't want to carry that child to term.
