Well, I'd better get rid of that post before somebody runs screaming for a mod, anyway.

23 million unemployed ..
There is around 301 million people over the age of 18... per US census.
7.8% would be roughly 23 million. The problem with your figure is that it doesnt account for those who are of working age... but cant physically (or mentally) hold a job.
According to Gateway Pundit, when Obama took office there were 142,187,000 employed. Do you really want to go on record as saying over half the country was out of work when Obama took office? If so, 23 million now looks pretty damn good.

I think you are missing something, tazzy. 301M isn't the number of Americans over the age of 18. It's the number of Americans of all ages.

The image below is the seasonally adjusted Civilian, noninstitutional population 16 years old or older (population numbers in the thousands).

Last but not least, below is the seasonally adjusted Civilian Labor Force participation rate (percentage)

According to the BLS.gov site (which is where these graphs came from), the population has been increasing fairly linearly while the Labor Force hasn't. As you can see in the last graph, the participation rate has been dropping since the middle of '08 and hasn't really stopped declining yet.

We may have 600k more jobs now than we did in Jan. '09, but we have fewer people employed than in Jan. '09.

Better, but still not right.

Where are people in prison?  thats rising, where is the greying of america is in those numbers, thats rising, where is the shedding of government jobs is in those numbers, thats rising.....the mangled vets from Iraq? still statistics and not the picture.

It is difficult to have an accurate picture.

Actually, you were missing something. You can admit it. It's really a small thing. And, as a demonstration: I was missing something, too. I thought we were just over 300M total population, and was wrong.

My total was based upon 308,745,538 people, per the US census 2010

http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2010/briefs/c2010br-03.pdf

with 24% removed for under age 18.

Are you sure you have your facts right..........whats the word I am looking for here........ Oh yeah, EVIDENCE.

According to official statistics " The number of unemployed persons, at 12.1 million, decreased by
456,000 in September. "

So, you're sticking with your 301M number, then?

308M quartered is 77M. 77M x 3 = 231M. Now, that's only 75%, but I'm guessing that the next percentage point isn't carrying 70M people, so, your number is, indeed, incorrect. The link you gave showed that 243,275,505 Americans were 16 years old or older in 2010.

Thus, you did miss something. Add into it that not all of those 245M+ are looking for jobs (the participation rate I linked to). Had you gone with the BLS databases, as I did creating the graphs, you'd have seen that we have more jobs, but fewer people employed.

Pst... might wanna check out Polite's post.

And, you are right. My math is off... making Rob's numbers even more implausible. 18 million.... is less than the 23 he quoted.. and that still doesnt take into consideration those who cant or dont wish to work.

I was no posting in support of Rob's 23M number. Feel free to hold him to that claim. [8D]

I'm not sure what your last phrase was referring to. Those that are not able, or aren't looking for work, aren't included in Unemployment numbers (except those who gave up because they have become discouraged).
