Talked with a guy last night that volunteers with ISOH/IMPACT. They've sent out 15 semi trailers of various things to the Sandy relief. The first of their trucks left prior to Sandy making land contact. On a semi-related note: ISOH/IMPACT has over 200,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space to fill with relief goods in preparation for disasters. Prior to Katrina making landfall, they were mobilizing and trained volunteers were North of New Orleans waiting for the storm to hit. They had semi trailers en route. Much of the time, supplies are brought out and then distributed by the Red Cross. So, yeah, private charities can be a huge bonus to disaster recovery, and can even be ready ahead of an actual disaster. This won't alleviate the need for Governmental help, but it may mitigate it.
